Yeeeeeah I'm getting married next month and am also on immunosuppressants, and am very concerned that there will be people attending who are not vaccinated but do not wear a mask.

Even though I'm providing masks, a sign explaining the situation, and have it stated on our RSVP site that unvaccinated people MUST mask or not attend at all.
 
I am so frustrated that CDC and other government officials loosened COVID restrictions so quickly after cases numbers started to go down. They might be under pressure to do so, I don't know, but I've always felt it was way too soon. Seeing all the traveling in July 4th weekend, I'm really not surprised that cases are surging.

I'm glad that our hospital is still keeping all COVID policies in place and every employee is required to wear mask. Call me chicken, but I have yet to dine-in at restaurants since the re-opening in May.
 
Im working the same ER job I had last summer, when we had a team of very good, competent receptionists

And this summer, they are usually good but man sometimes make odd decisions. I triaged a cat yesterday (he had called them ahead of time) that has had a chronic ear infection the whole time this guy has had the cat, just had ears cleaned 2 weeks ago at pDVM, and came in for a sedated ear cleaning. To the ER. I am not sure if the receptionists didn't ask enough questions to know it was chronic, or if they thought it was OK anyway, but the Dr was not happy about it.

I am really just generally upset about the misuse of vet ERs. We are not here for your convenience
 
Things that make me physically ill: We are experiencing a serious drought here, to the point where most counties have declared a state of agricultural emergency. Thankfully I had put in a request for a load of round bales from my hay guy back in April, because I had a feeling this might happen. He texted me the price yesterday and they are almost DOUBLE what they were last year, because he was only able to get 1/3rd of his usual number of bales. I've been trying to "shop around" but basically all the hay ads are ISO ads, and pretty much no one is selling. So I'm just gonna bite the bullet and spend a cool ✨$7600✨ on horse hay this year (I spent $4300 for the same number of bales last year). RIP my line of credit :whistle:

I don't think i ever dined in at a restaurant... even before covid
 
I've given up being angry at the stupid lack of COVID rules, it isn't worth my energy and being angry about it is only hurting me so I've just given up. Has made my stress so much less. I keep myself as protected as I can and strongly encourage my family to do as well. But I'm over letting it take up any significant part of my emotions.

We had an anal gland abscess come in when I was on ER. Who had gone to the rDVM THAT MORNING for it. rDVM didn't poke it or anything which is fine but did give the dog antibiotics AND pain meds (iirc gaba and carprofen). And yet. This dog still showed up at ****ing 10 pm. And then the owners had the AUDACITY to get annoyed that their dog was still there at 1 am before getting discharged because “it’s late”
MAAM WE KNOW. WE ARE STILL HERE TOO. I WAS SUPPOSED TO LEAVE AN HOUR AGO BUT SORRY THAT A SLEW OF ACTUALLY CRITICAL ANIMALS CAME IN ALL AT ONCE.

Omg. That's another thing, why do people think they will be seen right when they arrive, and get mad when they aren't? Do they just think there are always 50 doctors working, vs the 1 or 2 that actually are?

A doc I work with (who is stupid smart and ridiculously efficient) posted this a few months back and I really think it encapsulates our frustration and sadness when people are just ridiculous recently:

I just have to share my biggest pet peeve in the veterinary world right now- clients complaining about the long wait at the ER... we are doing our best. I work a 14 hour overnight shift, 6pm-8am, where I am the only doctor on staff. I have to take care of 14+ hospitalized patients, some of which are very sick and require bloodwork, intensive monitoring, and treatment plan adjustments every 1-2 hours. At the same time, I’m trying to triage, work-up, and care for the non-stop incoming emergencies. Just like in the human medical field, we see the most critical patients first- that means the actively seizing boxer, or the blocked cat, or the hit by car chihuahua are going to be the ones rushed back for immediate medical care. So a long wait at the ER is a good thing, because that means your pet is not in immediate danger of dying. I, along with my amazing overnight technicians, do not get a moments rest during those 14 hours, not even to sit down and have a bite to eat. So to the client last night, that came in at midnight with her dog because it was having an arthritis flare-up, who had the audacity to complain about the 4 hour wait, and to reply to my apology with “I don’t understand how you can say you’re so busy when I’m the only person in your parking lot” - I ask that you put yourself in my shoes for a moment. Because before I made the phone call to you, I just finished doing CPR on a cat that coded, and had to let an owner know that her beloved cat passed away. Instead of berating me for having to wait, try to appreciate that I am here, in the middle of the night, to help your dog get out of pain.

Dude, be the bridezilla/groom that requires proof of vaccination for people to not be masked. Only the people with vaccines get a sticker or something that marks their vaccination status. Those without that are required to be masked at all times. If that offends the antivaxxers in attendance enough they don’t come, so be it. I wouldn’t want them there anyway.

I know seriously… like half the ERs in the state are no longer operating 24 hrs due to lack of staffing and due to this unbearable caseload…. Meaning the remaining ones are super ****ed.

This dog has even been seen by the rdvm for this thing THAT MORNING!!!!!! That’s what makes it even worse. And then the damn thing ruptured on it’s own within 5 minutes of it getting here which was fantastic 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

Our ER was like this before we started using ClockWise, essentially an online waiting room. Clients put their contact info and reason for visit on the website and get an estimated wait time (we can adjust whether we'd see a new appointment every 30min or 1h or even 2h depending on how many docs and support staff we have on board). Anything concerning in the reason for visit, techs call and do a phone triage. If needs to be seen immediately, all other non-critical appointments gets pushed back one slot. On crazy days clients see a 14h wait time, but they wait at home and don't feel the need to break the hospital door and throw things at us. We'd still get walk-in critical cases all the time, but overall it gets a looooooooot more manageable. And honestly, a lot of clients calm down after a few hours wait and realize that 3 bouts of diarrhea in an otherwise healthy 4 year old dog isn't truly an emergency.

I started the company from ground zero with him (working 60-70 hrs a week for 2 years) and 6 years later, after helping making it a nationally recongnized company, am leaving.

NOW, the sons want to complain about my payroll these last two months because i am not hair-pulling-out-crazy-busy (i've trained my staff and actually can kick back for the first time) even though they are still 2 months behind on payroll.......ARGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :bang:

AND, i never took a real vacation but once, don't play golf every Friday and don't have to go to kids' dance recitals, school plays in the middle of the day, and play mister mom to a sick kid even though you have a full-time stay at home wife!

Working for a very small company that is a family business is just not for me. Boss man gets it, but his silver spoon sons don't GRRRRRRRRR. 👎

Yup.

Of our 7 (2 24-hr referrals and 5 'er only') 2 of our er-only places are closed 2 nights a week now ... and a third one just announced they will follow suit. So 3 of our 7 can't stay open the hours they are supposed to.

And, of course, we all are already closing essentially nightly as we hit capacity. So this just makes it worse.

It is beyond unreal what is happening right now in vet med and as best I can tell there's no end in sight.

I can see how it would be nice if you were overbooked, but that's not my situation.

I'm booked enough to be busy if everything goes as planned and to feel maybe just a touch too busy if a few things go haywire, but I'm not really overbooked. So when things don't show up--especially multiple things--I end up with nothing to do.

It becomes doubly annoying when I know that we turned people away earlier because we didn't have room in the schedule. Or when one of the other doctors was squeezing something in that we could have just worked into my schedule had we known I'd end up with a big ol' gap.

I think the hardest thing about it for me is that I'm honestly really tired since starting work... but if I'm busy then I don't notice it. Once I get a big chunk of down time, the tiredness hits me and makes it hard to get through the rest of the day.
 
Schedule roulette is a fun game. I look at my schedule in the morning, and based on the presenting complaints of the new clients + how reliable the previous clients are, I try to fit stuff in around where I think I might have a no show. Sometimes I win; sometimes I lose and end up exhausted. But my production always looks good!

Yeah the not being able to see another pet or pets was what really made me mad, finally convinced some clinics to start charging exam fees up front for those that no show (not refundable if they no show again) before they could schedule another appointment.

I was usually fairly quick that I'd be kept up on records, but I'd definitely use that no show time to call with lab results, other callbacks, etc since I could never convince clinics to build in callback time to the schedule. So I'd rarely not have something else to keep me occupied.
 
I've been working in ECC at the teaching hospital this summer to get some experience since I've never worked in ECC before and was interested in it. Really enjoyed the work, but honestly it's hard to convince myself to stay on during the school year for $11/hour. 🙃
 
This isn't so much a rant but more a just expressing my exhaustion. The vet assistant who normally works with me on Wednesdays called out today and so my shift was moved to cover her, and all that is fine and dandy, but she is wayy more experienced than me, and I'm struggling to fill her shoes xP

I can CERTAINLY understand that sentiment, since that's crap pay.

But you're not doing it for the pay. You're doing it for the connections, the recommendations later, the experience and knowledge and skill development.
 
Some of you who’ve played WW with me before might recall me complaining about my boyfriend’s upstairs neighbors who had a mysterious baby and would vacuum at either 6am on a Saturday or 1am on a weeknight.

We are currently in the process of moving my bf upstairs into their old apartment. There is absolutely zero carpet in the entire place. What the hell were they vacuuming 3x a week??? A rug??? :bang: :eyebrow:

This is true! That's what I told myself when I took on the job for the summer 🙂
I just also don't think I can reasonably take on the extra job load when I'm also already doing research and helping run a few clubs on top of the course load. It's less convincing even so with the low pay.

True story, best way to knock out my baby is to run the vacuum in the room. Probably not at 1AM but while I was on maternity leave if he wouldn't stop crying or needed a nap desperately I'd put him in the bouncer and then vacuum the room and he'd be out like a light.

I really expected this post to be you telling me that vacuuming babies is, in fact, not how one cleans them.
Instead, I learned something.

I made $8/hr when I was working ECC in the large animal hospital :laugh: granted different area, but yeah.

Depends on whether the experience and connections are worth it to you 🙂 most of the jobs that are available in the vet school don't pay much afaik, at least here. I'm sure it's similar at most schools.

Ugh I feel this, I couldn't get in for referral for a possible (probable) herniated disc until October so I'm basically just limping around with intense leg pain that is controlled ish with an ungodly amount of NSAIDs and Tylenol until then. Finally talked my PCP into giving me some gaba to try in the meantime but it sucks because I can't do any of the normal activities that I enjoy.

Also got a referral for psych (surprise surprise, the GP does not want to manage my 4 comorbid disorders themselves lol) and can't get in until December! Yikes. Also the no show policy in this places is draconian, if you don't give at least 24 hrs notice before coming in for an appt you get blacklisted for a year. Wild.

Over two weeks later, not even a sighting.

I had a feeling from the start that I was never going to see her again, but I was really hoping to be wrong. Still hoping to maybe somehow be wrong.

At this point though, anger is predominant. It's going to be awhile before I can trust anyone with my pets again.

I hope the gaba is helping you some 😞 idk what dose they put you on, but I need 600mg TID to even help anything. (Lol plus my 800mg ibuprofen and 1000mg Tylenol TID as well...)
Also, can your GP send you for an MRI themselves at least? Mine was able to when I first started having these issues so I at least was able to get the diagnosis

They started me on a baby dose initially because I wanted to gauge how much it sedated me before I head off into things like doing surgeries and driving lond distances, both of which I have to do this weekend lol. Right now I'm just taking it at night but I do think I'm probably going to have to up the med dose over time as I figure out how I react to it

Yeah I def had to taper up to what I’m on now but it finally started actually doing something 😂 it does sedate me some but I’d rather have slightly decreased pain and be a little sleepier

Yeah, just didn't want any bad surprises in the middle of full day of surgeries. If I had this appointment earlier in the week I would have pushed for a higher dose to try since I didn't have anything to do
