Idk how much time you have spent in clinics, but I am with pp9 on this one. If you aren't 100% in, this probably isn't for you. It's a lot of school, a lot of debt, and a difficult career field. If you have minimal clinic experience, I would recommend calling clinics to shadow asap to determine if this is really what you want. I know more than one vet who went into vet school with minimal experience and came out the other end stuck in a career that wasn't what they expected.
I've worked in clinics part-time for almost 2 years now and do really like it, I think it's more just that I'm scared to be wrong and then have a ton of debt to pay off. I'm not one of those people that have known I've wanted to be a vet forever it's more I took a guess and it feels right (or did until the last month I've been questioning it).

I had this big old post in the WWYD thread. But the TLDR is that I don't suggest anyone go to vet school at this point unless theyre in. Everyone who doesn't get in this year shouldn't reapply and everyone who is thinking of applying in the next few years shouldn't. Not until the loan situation is figured out (i.e. are we getting rid of the grad Plus loan).

I'm all about reporting these animals to management and calling this **** out.
I sure did tell an employee to which they responded they were too understaffed to deal with the problem. Not to be a Karen, but I will be calling corporate because EW.

I am that annoying patient with my human doctor's office always messaging beforehand to ask for the CPT codes to ensure coverage with my insurance company myself before getting anything done (even office visits sometimes). The doctor's office did it for me this time and I trusted them.

The insurance denied the claim. I am now on the hook for a $1500 medical bill I cannot afford. 😡 This is after a $2000 other expensive unexpected bill I also could not afford.

It makes me angry that there is a disclaimer on the messaging system for my insurance saying there are no guarantees of coverage even if a representative says it will be covered in the message. Insurance is such a scam sometimes.

I wouldn't be paying that bill and be telling my doctors office they're doing a peer to peer on this one. They screwed up and not you

I've had this happen with dental insurance. They don't fully run a pre-authorization, just put it into some system/program and spits out covered/not covered. I pitched a fit as we were told a procedure would be covered come to find out it wasn't. I make sure to ask for a full authorization now for any big procedures- which will take time. So sorry! Human health insurance sucks

Make sure you ask for an itemized bill. Know that you can negotiate with them, either via a patient advocate or directly with billing. Offer them something like "I can pay you $800 today, right now, can you accept that?". If they won't, keep trying each week and seeing what the minimum they'll accept is.

Call your insurance directly and ask for an appeal; speaking with a human gets you so much further than a messaging system.

Hospitals and insurance are a scam, you just have to know how to play the game. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Know that you as a patient actually have more power than you think. If you can negotiate the bill down and pay just enough to get it below $500, MOST places cannot use a medical collections account of less than that against your credit, and none can use a paid medical collections account if you get the chance to pay it later on.

Same, I just had a crown done and my treatment estimate said it would cost $1250 and my insurance would cover 50%. They had me pay $625. Then I get a bill in the mail asking for an additional $61.50. They billed insurance 1600 and insurance approved 1373 for the procedure and paid the dentist 686.50. Then the dentist came after me for another $61.50. I was like, y’all told me it cost $1250?! I understand places over bill insurance hoping to maximize their profits, but if the insurance paid you MORE than you really expected to get, why am I now being asked to come pay more too? The lady tried explaining how they had only expected insurance to pay $1250 and that wasn’t the actual cost, but then why did you put that on my treatment estimate and have me pay half that up front? Just be happy with your extra $61.50 from insurance and don’t come after me for another $61.50 too. I mean obviously my situation was a lot better than owing thousands more, but it was still infuriating and felt like I was being ripped off.

Dentists are a nightmare in and of themselves. The fact that dental insurance is not wrapped into medical pisses me off so much, as if only the ones who can afford it get to keep their luxury bones. We almost had to apply for CareCredit when the spouse needed a root canal and a crown last year because they had maxed out their dental insurance on *checks notes* routine cleanings, a filling, and problem visits for the tooth that needed the root canal.

Drove nearly 4 hours to see my boyfriend & am now stuck overnight 20 mins away because of a storm. I'll get to see him soon enough but tonight just feels absolutely painful, so close yet so far... I love my home province with all my heart & yet the weather seriously emotionally damages me...

In order to have a friend, you have to be a friend, so I am going to go see my friend this afternoon. They kept asking to see me and I kept having to say no because I had the flu and didn't want to get them sick.

I really don't want to go though.

On Thursday night, I couldn't turn into the parking garage where I normally park because it was being used for special event parking. This meant that I had to park 4 blocks away and walk in 2-degree weather I wasn't totally dressed for. My hip still hurts because this is the furthest I have ever walked without stopping since hurting myself. It hurt so bad and I felt like I needed to stop but I couldn't because I didn't want to be even more late to class than I already was with not being able to park in the garage next door.

I still hurt and desperately want to stay home in my room with my heating pad, but I can't and it's just miserable. I have a hard time doing the big step to get into their house, so that's going to make my pain even worse. It's so hard to do stuff when you don't feel well.

I am genuinely so freaked out about the introduction of a bill to eliminate Grad PLUS loans. Nothing is impossible anymore. I get a text from my mother “Cyprus is still on the table. Take your interview seriously”. And now I’m just second guessing everything. Do I get up and go back to Europe for at minimum 5 years, to an unaccredited school with a cheaper tuition over this? What if I want to come back to the states? Will I even be able to take out loans in Greece or Cyprus for this? How will I pay rent? The school is 2 years old, there is not enough data for me to know if it’s worth it or not. Money money money. So then what? I go back to the EU, stay in the EU and make even less than I would in the USA? What the F.

is this the Tuberville bill? That ****ing guy has been introducing that **** to the house every year. Last I saw it didn't have much movement but I'm keeping my eye on it like a hawk. I hate these pigs. Tuberville should have stuck to teaching football, not introducing laws in government to make people's lives worse 🤢

I feel like once I week I go down a rabbithole of all things bad, and I saw this video on TT of a 2nd year med student who was in tears over this and it moved me. Its so crazy to think all our dreams could come to a staggering halt. We are qualified, we are diverse, we come from all different backgrounds and walks of life but have come together with one common goal; to help people. All I want to do is help people through helping their animals, all I want to do is protect our food animal industry, all I want to do is advocate for our planet, our people, our animals. I just want to help. Please for the love of God, let me help. This is my calling. 😭

Is it worth calling over emailing? I have an email drafted up I was going to send to my 2 House reps and 2 senators.

I tried emailing complaints to the Felon House on Washington Avenue and they were bounced back repeatedly. I'd say try emailing but if they have it filtered so anything with specific terms isn't accepted, you'd have to call or write by hand.

Just wrote a republican senator about the proposed house memo to sunset grad plus....feels like throwing sticks at a spaceship. 😞
I feel you. But we can't stay quiet, or they win. We must dissent and we must stand strong. That's the only way to take them down.

Reasons why we are in the position we are-education and pure ignorance of governance. The USDA put out poison for invasive starlings in our region. People be finding dead birds in their yard now and be freaking out. The city shared the info with the public the info they had from USDA-albeit short notice but there was communication. Que the golden comments:

"They should be worried about the illegal immigrants instead of birds. How much taxpayers money paid for that?"
-Um clearly you have 0 idea what the USDA does and doesn't do

"How dare the city allow this ..we had no notice of a spray ...I didn't know birds were such a problem ...I guess they hate everything down here ...trees ..clean streets
Affordable housing...good medical ...shops
So what were these birds doing ...were they attacking people or animals ...or eating our crops
Are they all diseased ? Why were we not told about these birds or allowed to vote on it ??
I like to know what I'm breathing in or comming into contact with before it happens !"
-Umm again clearly you have 0 idea what the USDA does and it's not up to a vote

"Our City is very good at practicing that apologizing is easier then asking for permission mindset!"
-Yet again 0 idea what the USDA is and the fact the city has 0 control over this 🙄

Tested positive for influenza... explains why I've been on my deathbed for 3 days... at least it isn't bird flu... just glad I was vaccinated at least because I can't imagine it being any worse than it is.
The flu was ROUGH this year. Ended up in the ER a few months ago. One of my rotation preceptors was upset I was missing and then someone showed her a pic of me in a hospital bed 💀Feel better soon! Plenty of fluids, NSAIDs, and sleep.

I'm not going to waste extra words on them, but just Wisconsin, that is my rant (see c/o 2029 thread for more context if needed)
i was going to come in here and vent about how there is expected decorum for applicants, but admissions can make incredible mistakes and we just have to brush it off bc "thats the process" ??? less we forget, we paid to apply to their programs.

So glad you're doing better now!! I usually end up with one major resp illness a year (last year was walking pneumonia, before that RSV) but influenza has somehow been by far the worst. Spent all of yesterday laying in bed & staring at the ceiling in total darkness with tears flowing out of my eyes... I couldn't even stand up. Still feeling run over by a truck today but I can at least look at a screen now without my head exploding...

SO many schools this cycle just not being responsive about anything. the thought of going through this again is HELL!!

it's not even about not being responsive. i understand getting 200+ extra applicants can throw off the operation. however, sending rejections at 3am? sending random emails to accepted applicants prior to admissions decisions coming out? not communicating when certain extra steps of the application will be released for completion? i feel as though the same level of respect is not often shown to us as the applicant.

No one prepares you for how much scam/junk email you get once you publish something. I'm getting at least 10 emails from bogus journals/publisher things a day in my non-work, but 'professional' email account. USE A BURNER EMAIL IF YOU PUBLISH, EVERYONE
What’s been worse for me is going to conferences and them selling my info to the vendors. Since I went to a conference in my state like three weeks ago I’m getting DAILY emails from a therapeutic laser company and they’re addressing my emails to “MY NAME, CLINICAL PATHOLOGIST”. Like…you think I need a laser?! Practice solutions and construction companies…I don’t need your products k thx bai.

I totally understand ranting and respect that, but I do want to quote battie here because I think the process of vet school applications is poorly understood in general. The issues/concerns you guys have been having happen every year to at least one school. I think people assume that this is an automated process and things should be as simple as hitting a button and everything is taken care of. It's not. GPAs are calculated manually. Transcripts are reviewed manually. Entire apps are reviewed manually.

I know for a fact that at multiple schools, those rejection (or acceptance) emails are sent individually by hand. So it was sent at 3am because someone sat down at the end of their normal day (let's say 8-9pm, once they're home from work, kids are in bed, etc) to get that done. When you're rejecting hundreds of people manually...that takes a lot of time. And manually may be the best way to avoid sending emails incorrectly, believe it or not. If you all received the rejection email at the same time, someone manually input your email address before that email was sent en masse.

As for the random emails that make no sense, I totally buy that as an IT mishap. Which also means it has nothing to do with the vet school at all and everything to do with IT messing up. As students are put on an accepted list, they probably pass on a list of emails to IT so IT can get rolling on opening up whatever portals/accounts/etc need to happen for that accepted student. The vet school absolutely does not do that part of the process, I can all but guarantee that. If you've ever worked at a sizeable company/institution, you've worked with IT and you can probably now reflect and think about the crap your IT dept put you through (no offense to anyone in IT...).

Lack of communication generally also is because the school cannot guarantee anything date-wise. If they tell you that something will happen on the 3rd, and it doesn't, all 1500 of you will be calling the school with figurative torches and pitchforks (I've been in the office during admissions season at UofI...it's not pretty. Literally the phone was constantly ringing). They keep it vague for a reason.

And as harsh as this may sound...you do not need to be individually communicated with in all circumstances.

Just wait until you get out in practice and your clinic is messing things up left and right, and you have to answer to clients spitting the 'we paid for this!' right back at you, lol. And 99% of the time, you had absolutely nothing to do with the mistake.
I get it. Really. It took me three application cycles to get accepted (my last cycle I had already decided and I was actively pursuing a back up career), and my in-state gave me 0 love.

Likewise, I truly want to relay that the schools do not take this lightly and they 100% understand that this is a make-it-or-break-it circumstance for applicants. For one, most of the admission committee members were in the same circumstances at one point. I can promise you after working with the admissions department of my school while a student, this process is extremely important to them. They consider us potential future colleagues and the future of the profession. If they didn't care, they simply wouldn't do it. It's a cheap, thankless job that most actually volunteer for and aren't paid to be a part of.

Likewise, these admissions committees are tiny. We're talking no more than 2-3 dozen people handling 5,000+ applications to get through from Sept through the early fall to get interviews and decisions out in a timely manner. And now that the cycle starts in January (used to be May when I was applying), the cycle is even more extended on them, so they are handling two cycles at once for about the quarter of the year.

Yes, you're getting emails late at night. That is an individual who is in the admissions office emailing you at 10/11pm or even midnight; this individual's life is revolving around your (group your) application and they are working 12-16 hours a day to get through all these applications.

Schools who post memes, gifs, etc. (assuming you're calling out NC State?) do so potentially to take the edge off and it doesn't land with you, or they legitimately have a student who is paid 7-10/hr to manage social media for the school.

Again, now that we have thousands of applicants beyond even 5 or 6 years ago, file reviews are simply a non-starter. There are not enough humans in the admissions committees to be able to offer them to everyone. And that's the problem; if they offer a file review to one, they have to offer to all. And even if only 1000 people ask, that's 1000 hours, which would be 3 applicants per day over the course of the year. But they can't offer reviews 365 days per year because of holidays and weekends, and a file review on January 10 doesn't really do a whole hell of a lot of good. Just doing reviews from April 15 (signing day) to Sept 15 (closing) would be 56 days (Mon-Fri) that schools could offer reviews. That's now 18 reviews a day for 1000 applicants. That would literally be a single person doing 1 hour long reviews 18 hours a day for 5 months straight. And that's without any preparation prior to these reviews.

There are simply not enough resources any more. Vet school is finally as competitive as human medical school (used to be an urban myth until around 2020). And because of that, schools have their resources stretched thin and they are doing the best they can with what they are given by the bureaucracy that is higher education.

This isn't a message to tell you to stop ranting and suck it up. This process sucks. Been there, done that, and didn't get the t-shirt twice. I had 14 rejections over 3 cycles. Please let your frustrations out because it sucks.

This message is simply to put into perspective that the people who are determining your vet school life are doing what they can with what they are given. They have very limited control, even the deans of student life/admissions/academics. There is no malice, there is no disinterest. They care deeply about this process and take it extremely seriously.

Oof yes this is a pet peeve of mine. Unless you are willing to buy my team lunch or send me a sample product, get lost!

And I understand that 100%. Being on an admissions board is extra on top of an already demanding job. However, why do they keep making it hard on themselves? For example. UF is individually calling accepted students this year. However, it is getting done across multiple days. No emails have been sent for rejections or waitlists. They are waiting until all calls are done across 3-4 (maybe more or less) days to communicate to everyone. Why continue making it harder than it needs to be? I would argue this just not an effective way to get it done. Having multiple different interviewers call admitted students whenever they have free time also does not feel fair to those interviewers who are probably calling in between taking bites of their lunch or on their way out of the office for day.

It's not a perfect science, it's not a perfect process-- far from it. And I understand and sympathize greatly with the individuals who take time out of their already hectic schedules to interview students, review files and help make decisions. But things seem to just get more and more chaotic and more and more applicants throw their names in the pool.

I think you also have to realize that it’s a small percentage of applicants who are on sites like SDN. Many applicants have no idea the calls are going out, other than a social media post to be checking emails for an answer this week. I can see a school thinking they’re doing something great and trying to give the process a personal touch by calling accepted students. It would be neat to get to share that news with someone. But There’s no way to do that all at once. It’s interesting how the different school threads view similar things too. Like in the UF thread there’s pretty widespread outrage but the Arizona thread is more positive about the calls overall (I know it’s not 100% positive over there). And yes, maybe that’s because people knew AZ was gonna call and they got it done faster, but still. I’ve seen people lament not knowing a date for decisions and I’ve seen people lament that the date a different school did give them isn’t here yet. You’re anxious not knowing and you’re just as anxious knowing. There’s groups mad about possible IT issues and there’s others mad that they’re not relying on IT and doing manual phone calls. I feel like with the whole thing there’s no way to make people happy. It’s a high stress time and admissions knows that and I’ve been there too, but decisions always get released at some point. That’s not to invalidate everyone’s feelings or say you’re wrong for being frustrated, I absolutely understand those feelings. but I also promise once this has passed it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of life.

UF is not a school I could give you insight on, but I do wonder if they had some sort of IT breakdown or something. Perhaps they felt that their emailing would be unreliable and had to do this last minute. Perhaps they felt that making things more personal would encourage their top candidates (those readily accepted, not waitlisted) to commit. recruiting tactics are still a very real thing in vet school admissions, even though it seems like they are unnecessary from an outside perspective (they're not unnecessary).

Yes! This! Regardless, you cant win and you cant lose. It's a tale as old as time and it will just continue to be this way. AZ actually left comments on Instagram stating they would be done calling call accepted applicants by 4pm AZ, and all decisions and portals would be updated by the end of the day. I feel as though there was more grace given since they were open about when they intend to stop, when they expect decisions to be uploaded etc. Now that's easier to do when you have 300 people left in the applicant pool versus 2700 at the very beginning. But its the little things that help ease the nerves and give a sense of reassurance. But, I understand that it might not be possible for every school!

Your response actually made me think... UF was the school that sent acceptance and waitlist emails early on in the day (during business hours) and then sent rejection emails at 3am. Maybe due to that they wanted to boost moral again with the students they chose to accept?

I highly doubt this, that's a really manipulative take on it. I moreso meant a personal touch via phone call from a current faculty member/staff goes a long way in terms of a good impression.

To put it into more perspective: if a school accepts you, the school wants you. They want to encourage you to attend their school. Many applicants have a choice of schools - as Jayna said, SDN is a very small % of the community. What we see on here is not reflective of the stats, profiles, and acceptances/rejections the actual applicant pool has. Recruitment tactics matter, especially when it comes to OOS seats

I understand. I did not mean for my interpretation to come off as manipulative! It was based solely on what I've seen here on SDN so it's true, a large portion of applicants aren't on here (or at least don't make accounts on the site).

Second rant of the day: tried to have a constructive conversation with a semi-popular DVM on instagram regarding loan payoff. This vet just published a story saying that many new grads live far too extravagantly for their debt load, and then posted a screenshot of a single new grad they know that paid $430k off in five years with the 'see! it's possible and you can make so much money being debt free at a young age!' So basically implying to his followers that they are eating too much avocado toast and travelling to much if they aren't paying off their loans as quickly as this person did.

Sent them a polite DM about how they are likely leaving out a significant amount of information as to how that new grad was able to pay off that amount in such a short time (aka financial support from someone else for starters) and that most new grads are not living extravagantly.

The response? 'DVMs that attack their loans live in big cities and just pick up extra shifts.'

Ugh. it's just super misleading and damaging. I lived in a big city and picked up extra shifts, AND had a husband paying most of our bills and wouldn't have paid off $430k in 5 years. It is not normal or expected to be able to pay off mega-debt in a short time frame. Nearly all people who do that only do so under certain circumstances. Ugh.
