I recognize that I am involved in dog sports so I am around way more dogs, and specifically way more intact dogs, than the average person…but I do test for brucella annually. Those potty areas at dog events get nasty after a couple days and it can be passed via urine. Recommendation for breeding dogs from the theriogenologist I use is actually to ideally test q6m or at minimum before breeding/collection.

But we’re higher risk than Fluffy who spends five minutes outside or occasionally gets walked around the block.

The owner asked us to “save a testicle if possible.” They failed to mention to emergency the dog was out wandering in the woods “breeding with stray dogs.” 🤦‍♀️

Ew, that is so gross on both bolded accounts. I mean, I am not judging the dog per say, but the fact that they just let their dog out to go knock up whoever is insane. The one case during my clinical year (I was not directly involved, luckily) presented to neuro, which is a good reminder of possible presenting signs that can come with it.

Admittedly, Brucella is/was never on my list of 'watch out for this sucker!' It does make me wonder how many intact dogs with vague symptoms I saw on ER could have had it. Probably none, but you never know. I was usually more concerned about rabies. Now I worry about hepatitis, herpes B, toxo, and other assorted creepy crawlies.

Sooooo, many are aware of the negatives going on at my job. Well. I kinda get to benefit indirectly because of all this shenanigans.

I was slated to be overnight Fri through sun this weekend. Turns out a tech quit for one hospital and an assistant needs to call out for another for the next two nights. In order to fill these shifts, they're pulling the overnight tech and assistant from the third hospital and closing it Friday and Saturday nights. Which hospital was I overnight at on Friday and Saturday? The one that will be closed. I also have like 190 hours of PTO. So I'm taking the next two nights off last minute, rather than being the doctor who fills shifts last minute.

What am I going to do the next 60 hours where I don't have to worry about work? I have no idea!

I got a text this morning that one of the overnight doctors at one of the other locations is now sick and they're looking for coverage. They obviously asked me, which is logical.

But I don't want to. I pick up so many shifts, I'm one of the lowest paid docs, and after my girl's trip in July, I work three weekends of overnights in a row. So I don't want to work tonight or tomorrow.

But I feel such deep guilt not picking up these shifts. I definitely cannot pick up tonight. But I could potentially pick up tomorrow.

No, it is a full and complete sentence. You don't need to explain or elaborate. You don't need any "reason" for saying no. Hell, you could just want to stare at the inside of your eyelids all day long and that is fine.

I went through this exact thing when we started falling apart. 'We really need you to come in tonight, we are counting on you.' It's really hard to say no when you are emotionally invested in the hospital and team, but all signs point to you needing to get out out this situation ASAP.

You are not personally responsible for the function of the ER service, despite how much they make you feel like you are. Double that when they don't pay you enough to make it your responsibility.

Literally everyone, including one of the other docs at the hospital, said stay home. So I'm going to.

I've resolved to stay till October when my 401k is fully vested, and I just submitted a letter for a raise. But if by October things are worsening, I'll put my notice in (60 days) and find something new. Take two weeks off and then start in mid to late January.

The pile of boxes has begun. Olive, our ball of anxiety disguised as a cat, thinks we're abandoning her, and is demanding constant cuddles and attention in case she never sees us again. Green Bean is screaming at walls and waking us up at 4 am because his space is disturbed and the whole world needs to know it. At least they haven't started the non-stop puking that lasted the entire week before we left Massachusetts.

If we survived a cross country move, we can survive the move down the street. That doesn't change the fact that I just simply don't want to.

This is so not ok for myself and my license, for the patients, for the other staff and for this new tech herself. This is just setting her up for stress and frustration. I hate this crap.

This is definitely one of those things they do not talk about as part of being a veterinarian. Getting roped into all the "leadership/management" drama. We recently had an issue of concerning behavior with an employee as well and the manager wanted me writing to upper management about the behavior. I was definitely on the fence about it, because part of me knew it needed to be addressed for the safety of the patients, but also, I don't want to be part of the drama. I am not a manager. I don't want to be a manager. Let management do the management stuffs.

Similar. Let go of a very good *overnight* technician for a final straw type event. It's caused major issues for us, but between her attitude issues (in particular doctors) and the level of laziness she developed being overnight at our slowest hospital, she had to go. Problem is, she won't grow from it as an individual cause she thinks she didn't do anything wrong 🙄

I want to unfollow him (her?) but I also cannot get over how much random stuff he posts about the state of the profession claiming it as fact. This is the same person that posted a story that basically said if you aren't paying your loans off in a handful of years, your lifestyle is too extravagant. We have enough drama in this field, there is no room for people that are blasting colleagues in such a public way. Yesterday he made a run of posts that are basically complaining that new grads are making too much money (apparently he knows one person that claims new grads are asking for 50% production?)

I think this dude probably graduated 15-20+ years ago, if I had to guess. He's been posting vet stuff on this account for almost 10. The financial outlook for vets graduating, let's say pre-2010, is vastly different from new grads. That's before considering those pursuing specialty training, who are basically screwed (sorry, kidding! kind of ).

That's the point he's trying to make, but he is basically putting it out there as an example of why new grads want too much/make too much. While also saying "I work this many cases in a day, a new grad might do one case/hour, they aren't worth that salary." I didn't bite on that one, but as a new grad (rotating) I was managing more inpatients and walk-in cases than he has said he is doing now.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone try to ask for more than 24-25%? And we're supposed to believe one random person telling this guy a new grad asked for 50%?

Most definitely getting a CT on the foot this week. I still can’t curl my toes, I have a shooting pain up my ankle and the back of my thigh. The middle of my shin is killing me and all the bruising is getting worse with no reduction in swelling.

Ooof I’m sorry you’re dealing with that fam, that’s what my foot looked like when I broke my ankle last year. It’s not comfortable at all but compression and keeping it elevated is really important with that much swelling 🫂

I’ve also been a victim of cow injuries and lemme tell you they are no joke! My foot looked like that when it was broken and I was in a crazy amount of pain 🙁 I hope you heal and feel better soon!

It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, this has on all those schools in development. Especially those ones early on in the development process.

I do theoretically kinda like that the new RAP plan essentially has an unpaid interest subsidy so the loan balances don’t grow unchecked (but SAVE had that too so why couldn’t we just have stuck with that), but that “perk” is essentially completely obliterated by the fact that a 200,000 loan limit means many to most vet students will have to/be tempted to take private loans out to cover costs above that limit and we all know how predatory those can be plus now if you go on RAP, it’s a 30 year repayment, which is essentially someone’s entire working life if not into retirement.

Wow. Just wow.

I know the bill still has to go back to the house and then be signed but these geriatric imbeciles are ticking me off. How are you going to make medical and veterinary care hard to access?

These new schools either will have to have the cheapest tuition they can reasonably afford or just collapse entirely. AVMA needs to start lobbying harder for us because this is ridiculous

The Medicaid cuts are really scary too.

My brother doesn't work because of a disabling mental illness he is in denial that he has. He is probably going to lose his insurance if the work requirements go into place. 🙁 He has risked it by going without insurance in the past and I am afraid that he will again.

We were afraid that my cousin with severe autism was going to lose his caregiver that comes for a few hours each day so my aunt can work. That is a program sponsored by Medicaid. It looks like people with disabilities are going to be spared. At least there is that. 🙁

I’m extremely fortunate enough to have money left over in my college fund (and to have one at all) thanks to Bright Futures, and it should last my first two years of vet school, but I know I’ll have to take out loans starting my 3rd year. My dad mentioned some way to get grandfathered in to a loan if I take out like $100 right now, and then this bill won’t impact me. I’m not sure how true that is, we need to do more research on it, but it might be of interest to anyone who knows they’ll need to take out a significant amount of loans soon.

But anyone who hasn’t taken them out before like July 2026 would be considered a “new borrower” and wouldn’t be eligible for any grad plus loans. If you’ve already started or are about to start vet school and were planning on paying out of pocket/savings for a while and taking out loans in later years, it may not be a bad idea to take out just a tiny grad plus loan so you can be part of that existing borrower pool that is given an adjustment period in case you need more money. The downside is you’re going to pay interest you wouldn’t have had to pay otherwise, so some may say that’s not worth it because interest does add up while you’re in school. Others may disagree and say the potential access to grad plus is worth it. However, if you have enough saved that you won’t need to borrow beyond the newly proposed 200,000 direct limit, it probably doesn’t matter.

But even if you do still get gradplus loans, the bill will still likely affect you because it also changes income based repayment options and such. If you always planned on a standard repayment plan maybe it won’t affect you but most vets I know use an income based plans which are changing too.

Honestly not a bad idea, hopefully they’ll be helpful. I was hoping not to pull gradPLUS this year initially due to a couple factors, including a scholarship and a partner working full-time, but I am not risking it and will pull at the very least a small amount so I don’t lose the opportunity for GradPLUS because I can’t imagine not needing it in future years…..

My heart breaks for everyone applying currently or planning to apply in the future. Also yes, what is going to happen to SNAP and Medicaid is absolutely terrifying. Millions without healthcare and access to food. You guys know the saying about voters of the “face-eating leopard party”: “well, I never thought the leopards would eat MY face!” You have to wonder if it’s hitting Trump supporters at all.

I worked with SNAP-Ed for 5 years in Philly. I have cried today. I’ll probably cry tomorrow. The devastation is incalculable. I don’t think a lot of people truly understand how much of that money literally goes to feeding people, especially children. Like, they’ll hear it but I can’t believe they truly fathom what is happening, what losing said funding will do…… I have old colleagues just trying to keep everyone calm right now. It’s despicable.

They assume there will be a reasonable accommodation for hungry kids. No, there won’t. They’ll go hungry.

I’m going to be so honest. I think people— mainly our government, but also the alt right wingers— DO understand that the money goes straight to feeding people, straight to starving children, and they simply do not care. They fully understand people, especially KIDS, will go hungry. They are so brainwashed they think it’s “evil communism” to make sure people don’t starve or to make sure people have healthcare. They would rather spend the money inflating ICE so they can continue to pluck hard-working people with families off the streets and from their workplaces and from their homes. I am both seething and just devastated. It makes me cry too.

The research job market is insane right now. I've done 80+ applications and had a handful of interviews, and still no offers. My post doc officially ended last week and I just moved back in with my parents.

I've had some really close calls where they let me know that I was ranked 2nd in their search, and I've also had applications where I went through multiple rounds of interviews before being ghosted or rejected. I've been interviewing for another post doc job that I suspect might turn into an offer, but now that I've heard more concrete details about the salary I don't think it's even going to be feasible. It would be a drastic pay cut from my already low salary, in a much higher COL area, and requiring an international move. I almost want to withdraw from the application because there's no way I could make that work and I don't want to waste their time either, but I'm holding onto the slim hope that maybe they'll be able to offer even a little bit more than they've said? Ugh. I'm just tired and stressed out and tired of being stressed out. And I'm currently sleeping on a sofa. So, there's that too
