I mean, I think it's also okay for people to not like a place/have preferences, and saying they shouldn't have applied/gone to school there for that reason is a little silly. Preferred geography is not exactly a top factor on most people's lists when choosing a vet school.

For example, I love mountains and forests, and I prefer for seasons to exist as distinct entities but not be too extreme. The Midwest is generally not my ideal setting. Most parts of my home state (Florida) are also not my ideal setting. It's not a value judgment on you as a person for people to have those preferences.

yeah it’s just the immaturity aspect to it that bothers me. it was a choice, but some people just never give it a rest. If it really mattered that much, the school shouldn’t have been on your list. For the rest of us, we may not like it, but we chose the school and just make of it what we can without b*tching constantly (reflecting on people I know who did/do this).

Thankfully it’s usually only a small minority of people, but they can be loud…

Right. I totally respect the initial shock of winter, or the blazing heat in the south/hurricanes, tornado scares in the Midwest, etc. But again, you made the choice. And we’ve all, complain about stuff, even natives of the state, but the ‘this entire state is a **** hole’ kind of stuff is just 🙄

I'm also coming from the perspective that my home state is over sold/valued. Born and raised and now live in Denver. Literally no different than any other metro city center. The mountains are cool if you can spend the time and money to go. It cost my husband and I $700 to go and stay in Georgetown for 3 days with our toddler for our anniversary. Sure, we blew a bunch on souvenirs and such. But even if it was just the essentials, still an easy $450-500.

I mean, my current state is an entire hellscape right now. Literally. Hell. It is already keeping up to 110 degrees. HALP.

Is this when people’s trash cans start to melt in your state? I just remember seeing pictures online years back and stuff was just melting lol.

My separate rant: I picked up a relief shift yesterday after a pretty decent break (I think 6 months) and I had this massive realization that idk if I can do it anymore. I’m pretty spoiled in zoo in that I don’t have clients, don’t have the fear of board complaints/lawsuits (although in theory they could absolutely do that), and so on. We do worry about money, but not to a debilitating degree. But I worked harcore ER in peak COVID and could handle anything that was thrown at me, an urgent care shift shouldn’t be a big deal.

No one was nasty yesterday. 90% of people declined all diagnostics and it was treat and street. But just the constant ‘is this right? Did I miss a murmur? Will I get a bad review or pissed phone call? They declined everything and this kitten will die overnight’ etc came flooding back in. I want the extra disposable income, I miss doing stuff that I like (silly example, but one thing is monthly mani/pedis). But I just don’t know if I want to, or can, do it anymore. Zoo can be high pressure, don’t get me wrong, but now that I don’t do it regularly, small animal med feels very high pressure to me.

Highly recommend vaccine clinics. I do them on the other side of the state with VIP Petcare and it’s stupid easy work and I make good money doing it. It’s based on a bidding system though but for the most part in my side of the state I’m getting about 1k for a shift from 9:30/10-5/5:30 pm. 3 clinics in tractor supply/pet stores that run 1.5-2 hours each and then drive time between them (which on that side of the state probably isn’t terribly far between the clinic locations). Pokes and blood draws and the occasional question that you often tell them “yeah I’d Rec a full service vet for that” anyway.

I’m registered through vetco and have done a few, I agree they are way better! Lately on this side I haven’t gotten a single bid picked up though. I’m also limited to Sunday/monday and it seems most clinics are tuesdays and Saturdays here which sucks. I have to drive 2 hours to get to the regular Monday clinic which is a hard no.

Literally more than my monthly paycheck in 4 shifts, wowee
Did we just find yet another activity to do together? :thinkies:

jk pretty sure my contract forbids me from doing any work outside the university rip

Lmfao I’m in between housing right now and luckily my boss was nice enough to offer me her sweet cottage for a few weeks before I go live with family, but I told her my boyfriend would be watching my dog for those two weeks in a camper that was supposed to be set up through his work. Flash forward to a week after our lease ended on our apartment and the camper still does not have running water or reliable electric. That combined with a mega heat wave there’s no way in hell I’m having my dog stay in a camper unsupervised or he’ll bake to death. Sooo now the cleaning lady told me to sneak my dog in before my boss gets back from vacation and she’ll make any evidence disappear 😂 I’ve got 2 days, hopefully that camper can get some AC it’s been a ****show

Yeah same, otherwise I would have said yes lol
I think limited licensure also prevents this since you're only supposed work within the purview of your training program

Sometimes I think some people just complain because of lack of better things to talk about. I think some of them are also unhappy and want to pin it on something. I empathize though. At the last school where I worked before this one, there was a coworker in her 50s who just bitched and bitched about work the entire lunchtime every day. It just put me in a bad mood to the point where I felt like I couldn't eat lunch in the teacher's lounge anymore.

Is anyone else a little butthurt by OOS people hating on your state? Like, okay. IL is not the best state, and UIUC is in the middle of nowhere, yes. But it's a huge state, and judging the whole Midwest/state of IL by one small college town seems a little unfair. Some people say they hate the Midwest when they've barely experienced it! I know it's very hard being away from home and family-- I'm only 2 hours away and it's very hard. I'm a home body so I get stir crazy even on a 5 day trip to the state over, so I can sympathize with that. It still hurts my little Midwest heart when people diss on it so hard. I'm from Chicago and know it like the back of my hand-- I've even offered to take people up there to show them the good stuff. So far, only one person has taken me up on it lol. I'm also trying to counter the argument that the Midwest/IL is ugly by making Midwest appreciation posts of beautiful prairies and waterfalls that I've been to. I don't think I'm convincing anyone lol.

All that said, I try not to take it personally. I know a lot of the stronger opinions are rooted in homesickness, stress, and the general cynicism that vet school brings out of all of us. I don't plan to stay in Champaign-Urbana for the rest of my life either, but I'm at least going to make the most of it while I'm stuck here for 4 years!
Just here to say, as a Philly person who just moved to the Midwest for vet school, I think it’s got a lot of beauty and I’m excited to explore! And there’s lovely hospitality that I’m not used to, it takes me aback sometimes, but in a good way! 🙂

While I’ll be at UMN, I loved Chicago when I visited and I’d like to get there to visit more often now that it’s closer (I know, it’s not close but considering Philly to Chicago it is!) I LOVE getting to know new places from a local’s point of view, so I’ll take any recs you’ve got!!!

Oh yeah, UMN. You got the Minnesota-nice! Enjoy it! Lol. I'm from Illinois and depending on where you are people can be very friendly too, but Minnesotans are on another level of nice.

As for recs in Chicago, Pizza Lobo in Logan Square! All of the museums are awesome. My personal favorites are The Field Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and The Shedd Aquarium (small indie mention: The Insect Asylum!). Lincoln Park Zoo is also nice and it's free! Chinatown is always worth a visit-- Triple Crown Restaurant for dim sum, Happy Lamb Hot Pot, Sushi Plus Rotary Bar, and Feida Bakery. If you like Greek: Athena Greek Restaurant and Andros Taverna; Italian: Saba Italian Bar + Kitchen. There's more but this is just what I have marked on my google maps lol. Can you tell we are all about food culture here? Classic Chicago fast food experience (Southsider here)-- Ricobene's! Get the breaded steak sandwich!

A cubs game is always a fun time, Wrigley Field is awesome. The Chicago Botanic Gardens are apparently amazing, I've still never gone but it's been on my list for a decade! Maybe I should do that this summer... Also, I have to recommend walking around downtown to look at the architecture and a trip to Millennium Park. Every tourist has to see it at least once!

LOVE ALL OF THIS!!! Headed to visit a friend in Chicago soon and I’m pumped! I’m such a foodie and Philadelphia spoiled me rotten. Excited to try some of these suggestions - the museums sound so fun, too!

Thank you! 🥰🥰🥰

This isn’t a rant but also not a rave. I’m about to be so vulnerable rn. I just found out Sunday I’m 5 weeks pregnant. Husband and I were thinking about trying soon so I could have the baby after I graduate. But we weren’t extremely careful one single time and boom. I’m honestly feeling a lot of things. Excitement, but also extreme anxiety. My finances and relationship are honestly great. My family is thrilled and my mother cried in joy. The problem is my due date would be March 1st and I graduate in May. My MIL told me should would drop everything and move to help us, but I know this will make things very difficult. Holding off going to the school until I’m sure the pregnancy is healthy / going to make it as they were not very kind to my classmate who got pregnant and had a baby last year. Really don’t have any symptoms except being tired but I’m always tired. I’m a vet student. Feel free to drop words of wisdom.

I believe @Lissarae06 may have had a baby in school and might have advice? I could be making that up though or getting her mixed up with another SDNer though. My memory isn’t what it used to be, haha.

One of my classmates had a baby late in our clinical year too. I believe she may have even gone into labor on ER overnights and one of the ER techs drove her to the hospital. I’m not going to pretend to know what that’s like or have any practical advice, but hopefully the school will be flexible and let you rearrange your schedule to get vacations around your due date and do some less intense rotations after or something. That feels like it should be realistic. Fingers crossed everything works out how you want/need, both relating to the baby and the school!

Thank you so much! Luckily the way our clinics are set up I’ve already taken almost all of the intense and surgical rotations. I don’t think it should be too hard to change my vacation blocks to my expected due date. I’m very much a planner and this was very much not according to plan so stress!!! But I think we can do this.

Not here for advice on dealing with pregnancy in clinics, but here to commiserate on the unexpected pregnancy aspect. I get that. So I want you to know it is okay to not be super excited yet since this isn't going to plan quite yet. Unplanned pregnancy is hard emotionally in the beginning. I'm here to talk about it if you need!

Yep! I had my first kid finals week of third year. I have a photo of me strapped to all the monitors studying for my cardio final because I went into labor before I could take that exam. One of my classmates had twins in the middle of fourth year. I’m not sure how your school does it, but she walked with us at graduation then finished whatever rotations she missed when she went on bed rest then had the babies. Make sure you ask your doctor for a list of restrictions so the school will know what is safe for you to do or not. And that gives you some protection as well. I teach at Oklahoma State and we have had several students have babies while in school and it’s hard but they all manage.

I'm sorry to hear that your school wasn't supportive of a classmate. They should be. If you are comfortable, and when you're ready to be public about your pregnancy, I would recommend being hyperaware of what you can and can't do on rotations. I'm talking about things like exposure to inhalant anesthetic if your OB wants you to avoid it, lifting certain things, handling certain medications; let the faculty know. I'm a faculty member at a vet school and will never be pregnant, and so I'm not sure I would necessarily be aware of all of the accommodations that a pregnant student would need but I would be more than happy to make them happen. If you are not getting the help that you need from your administration, I would additionally recommend talking to a faculty that you know and trust to be an advocate for you. Happy to talk in more detail about the intricacies of bartering with administration if you need that help in the future. Congratulations!

I really appreciate this, and I needed to hear it. I’ve mostly been panicked and that’s made me feel guilty. I will definitely take you up on that thank you.

Thank you so much! I definitely knew about the anesthetic gas one but I for sure need to ask if there’s any others.

Congratulations! What a shame that UF wasn't supportive of your classmate.

On top of the scheduling suggestions, I would also reach out to the school's OSHA person (you should have someone who deals with that) and have them hook you up with a respirator and anything else you might need.

Not sure if you’d be really using it, but solensia and librela are definitely a no-no since they block nerve growth factor. I feel like handling chloramphenicol was also a no? I would bet if you asked your school’s pharmacy for a list of drugs that are used in the hospital that you should not be handling due to pregnancy that they’d be more than willing to help as well.

misoprostol is another biggie, although that's not something commonly prescribed.

Work fired a tech yesterday. They filed a board complaint against the owner today. Overall not too worried about their claims as we always try and make sure things are kosher and above board with the practice act, but ya never know. How do boards usually handle these things especially from disgruntled exemployees? Im still out for another 5ish weeks but ya know being an associate incase there happens to be any collateral damage I could possibly get caught in.

I.... I don't think non-clients can file against a vet in our state?

But I went through a board complaint last year. It went very smoothly. Our lawyer handled everything and I just needed to talk to him a few times and my hospital supplied the records.

I don’t see why one has to be a client to file. Disgruntled individuals aside, employees see stuff go down more than a client would

I think in our state, the board is a consumer protection type deal. I've seen on VIN that in some states, only clients that have been seen by that doctor can file complaints. I just don't remember if our state is one of those states.

ETA: just looked it up and it looks like anyone can file a complaint in our state.

Thanks y'all. Added to the list. Have my first OB appointment scheduled then I will be setting up a meeting with admin about all of this. Do we think live (edit; ANIMAL) vaccines are another no? I genuinely have never thought about any of this stuff.

Talked to another person a class below me who had a baby very recently and she said that admin was very accommodating to her so I have some more hope now things will be okay.

Be careful with goat repro stuff too if you have food animal rotations left…my bestie does mixed animal med and she had to go to a specialist OB with her first child because early on in her pregnancy she did a C-section on a goat that had stillborns and it turned out to be Q fever on necropsy. So she had to go on a bunch of meds prophylactically and get a ton of testing all throughout her pregnancy because some of her titers suggested possible exposure. She and baby were fine though. For her second child she stopped working on pregnant goats unless she was the only option (and they see a lot of goats) and then she wore full PPE.

Oh my goodness I’m glad they were okay! I actually was exposed to Brucellosis my first round of clinics 😐😐😐 Will indeed avoid repro stuff (hate it anyways haha). I only have one large animal rotation left and it’s equine but it’s after my due date.

Back to the vaccine rant. On a travel group for kids-while an experienced traveller in have 0 idea about flying with an infant- there's a post about "idk if I should vaccinate my kid." I've talked to Dr's but I wanted a more realistic idea. FFS. STFU. Quit asking variably educated internet strangers and get your kid vaccinated. Be thankful she can get vaccinated and quit putting innocent people who can't get vaccinated at risk. For being humans who are so advanced and can "think" we are incredibly dumb and I'm surprised some of us are still alive. While I'm all for choice in life core vaccines are something I don't think should be optional in life unless there's a medical reason.

Eta: extra salty because the baby won't go back to sleep. It's been over an hr 😒

We had a Brucella case in a dog during my clinical year too! Exposed a lot of people
