Stupid cars. Reminds me of my Taurus from college that literally I paid to replace some belt on 4-5 times because it would make the most awful WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE as I drove. Every time it was replaced, it would come back in like a week. I eventually gave up and learned to listen to the radio very loudly 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Some of the nastiest people I’ve ever encountered used to come into the shelter I worked out for low cost care. Some actively bragging about their backyard breeding programs while there for mandatory rabies vaccination only because the county was going to take their dogs otherwise. A lady threatened to “jump” my coworker for saying her cryptorchid chihuahua mix should be neutered and not bred.
I was going to say exactly this- it’s the backyard breeders for me with my community clinic :/ we have a very specific family that breeds and sells akitas- $2600 a pop and some of the most nasty people I’ve ever encountered when just trying to offer resources and help when they’ve asked for it:/
I feel like the people that complain that much are the people that don't actually *need* heavily discounted/subsidized services to begin with, and are just there for cheap vet care. The person that truly cannot afford the $50 will walk out and come back when they have it saved up, or will be calling people to lend them cash. That's been my experience anyways.
The humane society I used to volunteer at would require them to be spayed/neutered to use the low cost services to counteract that. If they needed help with the S/N, they'd get a voucher to help, but they still had to be S/N to use any of their low cost vaccine clinics OR their full service clinic. Obviously if they were young, exceptions were made but by like 6 mo or so I think they required it. More places should definitely do that.

that is a great rule! my shelter just started doing community stuff in the past year so right now we mostly just do S/N and vax. if the doctor is feeling nice he’ll offer other services like leg amps if it’s dire. but yes the lady that complained pulled up in a Mercedes and had a gucci handbag. which didn’t make me feel bad about being firm with the price…
(oh and the $1000 doodle she got from the breeder, but a $150 surgery is where she draws the line)
the shelter i worked for just banned breeders recently because we had s/n requirements like that and people kept arguing with us over it. we had someone who bred and sold bengal kittens and did not want any vaccines because they insisted the rabies vax killed their original queen. we told them it was the law in PA, got all 13 of the kitten vaxxed and checked, it was like $1000 for 13 kittens to get vaccines and wellness appointments. that's $76 per kitten, super cheap.

all of those kittens had a home waiting for them according to the breeders. “take extra special care of them, their new parents are waiting for them this weekend” 🤷🏻♀️
our clinic manager called a meeting after they left, he was fuming, and said they’re going to propose a rule to the board of “no breeders allowed to come in for low cost care”, board approved it after some deliberation

Random story time: I had one hoarder owner who was a frequent flyer at my ER, and she was a total outlier from what you'd expect of a hoarder financially. Somehow, she was always able to fork over thousands upon thousands each time she came in. She always was down for them to see a specialist and never said no to anything (except euthanasia...) even though she knew they would never get medication/follow up once they were discharged. Just sad that even though she had the money to properly care for those animals, she wouldn't until it they were circling the drain. In a 5 year period, she had brought in something like 75-100 animals iirc.
Yup - it wasn’t too bad! Tricky little raccoon baby. The immunoglobulin is a little weird because it’s viscous so it feels odd going under your skin, but aside from that I had truly minimal symptoms. I'm dealing with an herbivore that's a suspect rn... he didn't bite me but I did give him oral meds (wearing gloves) this week. I feel like my risk is really low but I'm euthanizing him on Monday (was supposed to be yesterday but owner couldn't transport his head to the lab until Monday so he's in quarantine rn). Currently experiencing anxiety about it but I also think if he was rabies + he would be dead by now. Just a lot of weirdness going on.
If you've been vaccinated before, you don't get ig. Just 2 vaccine boosters.
Awww I’m really sorry, that’s super stressful. So, mine was a weird experience because I was 2/3 doses in for pre-exposure and then I got scratched by one of the like 15 baby raccoons I was intaking that day, we just decided to have me go for assessment and the hospital talked with someone from the CDC I think and ultimately elected to give me full PEP 🤪 so I got 2 doses, then ig and vaccine (x4). I was under the impression you only needed boosters if you have the pre-exposure series done, so you might avoid the ig!
Oh sick, this makes me less stressed honestly. There's an epidemiologist at the state vet's office who deals with rabies cases and I think they'll advise me further. I'll update yall if he comes up positive...

This is one of those situations they warn you about in school! A neurologic animal can have any number of diseases, quite a long list actually, and rabies is relatively uncommon in this country (especially for an owned animal, assuming it was vaccinated). But you don't want to be the vet that ignores or forgets about rabies, especially if you do end up euthanizing the animal. Reminds me of the story probably every vet student has heard by now...cow presents to teaching hospital for hypersalivation, everyone thought it was a choke so multiple clinicians and students stuck their arms down this cow's throat to try and move whatever it was choking on. Ended up being rabies with a bunch of people exposed.
I just recently had to get post exposure and had gotten pre exposure vaccines in 2018. Titer was still good in 2023 and was going to be rechecked this year, but I got bit in May by a recently previously outdoor semi-feral cat with no vx history. Since I had pre-exposure, I just needed 2 doses of the vaccine again, 3 days apart and no immunoglobulin since I had homemade Ig. Animal control never followed up on that so that was fun and I’m glad I didn’t wait for them to do so before getting vaccinated. Downside was my county’s health department had never dealt with this before and didn’t know what to do, nor did they even look up on the state website what to do and so they tried to tell me I needed the 4 dose series with the Ig. Neighboring county was much better to work with and even though the girl I was speaking with on the phone had never dealt with a pre-exposure vaccinated person actually looked on the state website and confirmed that I did only need the 2. That county also actually stocks an urgent care with the vx so I went there vs my county apparently you have to get a script from a dr (usually from er) and then they order the vx to the urgent care so that was also an extra hassle.Have any of you rabies-vaccinated folks out there had to go through post-exposure prophylaxis? Exactly, the owner had been caring for him so I'm more worried about her really. I was vaccinated in 2023 so unless my immune system failed its job entirely, I imagine I still have a good titer. I told her about rabies from the start but it seemed kind of far fetched when the complaint was urine dribbling. Technically the textbook says he should have died already if it is rabies too. Rabies is the only way I can connect all his clinical signs, but it's certainly not a slam dunk. Owner's husband is a MD and I think he convinced her to pull the plug.
