I hate politics and I hate the state I’ve somehow found myself stuck in

First off I go into vote and we are told to go to left for democrat and right for republican. Don’t love being split like that like ain’t it supposed to be confidential? THEN Tell me why I went to vote this morning and there are 7 machines on the republican side and only 3 on the democrat side, causing a line to form for us and no one in line for the other side

I’m actually pissed like such an obvious ploy to get voters to get out of line for it getting too long etc. I hate this ****ing state and doubt my votes will have an effect but if I’m gonna be stuck here for another 4 damn years I may as well try

Shout out to the old folk I passed on the bridge protesting war and reminding me to vote

If you're in the state I think you're in, you should contact the [State] Civil Rights Project over this.

Yeah I’m definitely looking into this because it’s like such obvious voter suppression

You could also potentially contact FIRE to see if they would make the argument of "voting is protected first amendment speech".

why are horses ..like that
omg me to literally every animal ever. 'What was the plan with this anatomy?' 'Why doesn't your mouth open more than that if your teeth were going to be constantly trying to kill you?' 'Why do you turn your brain off like that? Why you no consider consequences?!'

ugh i love them but why

Bright-ish side? They seem awfully concerned texas really is going blue

lost my car keys which also had my wallet connected to it with my drivers license, credit and debit card, insurance card, aka all my important things. flipped the house upside down; ended up calling a locksmith thinking they're in my car. $600 later, keys are still missing.. only reasonable thing i can think of is that i dropped them and someone took them. now i'm paranoid that they're gonna come back and take my car 🙁 lesson learned: get an airtag and don't attach a wallet to your car keychain....
$600, new driver's license, and 3 canceled cards just for them to be ...under the refrigerator.

I can go through an entire diatribe here. I'm 2 weeks behind on my legal/politics podcasts. But gotta say, this primary is a wild ride.

If I’m stuck here I may as well try to flip this **** hole

Contacted civil rights office as well. Hopefully they check their emails 🫠
Update I got a number to call, made my report and apparently they have received MULTIPLE complaints about the same issue in the same county today and they are escalating it

Thank you so much @battie for the suggestion of whom to contact

Thank you for putting in the work. People continuing to report and stay in line when able is what is going to help overcome this.

Having trouble finding a contact for that site you mentioned, but I did shoot an email to the local NAACP with a voter suppression hotline.
Houston has two separate lines too, but we have plenty of booths for democratic (I am probably in the most democratic district in Texas)

You're pretty close. It's either Houston or Austin.
I am in the new district 18, which was gerrymandered to put all the democratic voters in one place. My district is 84% people of color. Unclear what percentage will be democrat because this is the first election since the gerrymandering.

I feel like my life is just forever going to be divided into the before / after of the decision to take away all wildlife services and research. Most days I wake up and hardly even feel motivated to be a vet anymore, I hardly want to do anything actually except stone myself into oblivion. I have Asperger syndrome and wildlife was my "thing" even before I could walk so I don't know how to accept a lifetime of building connections and knowledge and framework for future work in this province is gone. Truly nothing to say but "whatever, I guess"...

Let the defending of schools commence!

But seriously if one more person talks negatively about my school I’m going to lose it.

I'm ready and waiting to either just take down the entirity of the vet med education ecosystem or play devil's advocate just to annoy people. Tag me at your leasure

I apologise in case I worried anyone earlier. I of course still want to be a veterinarian very much but I'm just in a very low state atm trying to adjust to my new reality. 13 midterms at the same time as massive austerity cuts back home is really crap timing.

Something that's been really grinding my gears about the pre-vet Facebook is people on the waitlist being like "if you're accepted but not planning on attending why are you not declining your seat right now? Why wait?" Like, I held onto my Tufts acceptance until very close to decision day. I knew I was going to Minnesota but letting go of the guarantee of being close to home and not having to move was weighing on me. They give us until decision day for a reason, and a lot of schools do not move their waitlist until after that day anyway. You are not entitled to someone else's seat.

End rant/soapbox.

Tale as old as time. Literally happens every year and every year it ultimately doesn't matter

I’ve had at least 3 convos on Reddit since Monday with students saying they’d rather go into more debt than go to Michigan state.
Ugh maybe I need to get on Reddit more lol. Like I've said, find me a school that hasn't been the subject of gossip and drama

But why?? It’s a good school.
Probably because the NAVLE pass rate had been trending down for several years and was below 80% (76%) in 2024, but I think 2025 numbers were quite a bit improved and they’re making curriculum changes and stuff. But people fairly often will have really stupid arbitrary reasons they “hate” certain schools.

I always wish these people who choose a more expensive option for *insert reason here* would report back once they're in repayment. It would be really interesting to know from them, if they feel like it was worth it.

That’s so silly. As long as it’s on an upward trend, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Okay results are in, my district went 92% democrat.

what if cornell burns down? What if my partner dies before April 15th? What if my parents decide they're not supporting me anymore? What if I get cancer before April 15th? I will give up some of my spots but my anxiety says hold on to a few for a few more weeks. I get people are anxious but I also hate the assumption that just because one person turns down their spot it'll go to them. Waitlists are looong. There was one post where several people suggested it was downright unethical to not withdraw all your applications as soon as you get into school.

I agree with your rant.

I mean, the waitlisters would hear a little bit sooner if you withdrew now, but it doesn’t change the ultimate outcome…the next people in line will still get offered the spot after you decline, whenever that declining happens. People just struggle being patient and waiting to see what happens. And I get it, waiting can be tough, but this is definitely a thing where both options are totally okay and have the same outcome in the end.

I agree, and I'm going to withdraw 11/13 of my schools this weekend... but I resent the implication that it's unethical for me to hold on to one out of anxiety! Give me a few weeks to fully realize life actually worked out and relax about it 💃🏻

At one point someone would make a new thread every year telling people to drop their acceptances ASAP. People with acceptances have every single right in the world to wait as long as they want before turning down the offer.

The only argument I can loosely support is that turning down seats you know you won't be taking before the deadline might save some fellow applicants from throwing a deposit down only to get a call after their check is cashed. At the same losing out on a deposit is part of the game when you are on waitlists for school(s) you'd rather attend, and that would only matter at schools that start going through their waitlists before the deadline. There are multiple schools that wait until after the deadline, but I don't think everyone realizes that?

Side discussion, but I am wondering if waitlist movement this year is going to be crazy, or if it will be typical. How many accepted students are getting accepted only at private/OOS schools and will back out once the reality of the loan situation hits? I mean I almost backed out as I signed my deposit check for UofI (I was OOS) and that was looking at 'only' $250k or so. At the same time, I feel like the majority of prevets are still going to move forward because it's 'the cost of the dream.'

Yup. I knew as soon as Canada changed the immigration requirements and I got acceptances to US schools that I would not be attending UPEI and I pulled that acceptance before I even put a deposit down anywhere. But Tufts and UMN said their waitlists did not even get looked at until the day after decision day, so whether I held on to both or declined one, the people on the waitlist would not hear any sooner. I knew where I was going but I also had to make peace with it? That makes it sound like vet school is horrible lol but it was a big move for me, and the furthest and longest I've been away from home.

100%. Someone was already shook that UMN charges tuition for clinical summer between 3rd and 4th year and how that made it "outrageously expensive". I felt I was prepared for what I was agreeing to, and yet opening Nelnet still gives me heart palpitations *cries in $84k/yr tuition and living expenses*. I really don't think I'd make a different decision; Tufts was more expensive and Canada required visa bs that we didn't want to deal with (as well as an unstable exchange rate).

I am curious if there will be more late, right before school starts waitlist movement or first week dropouts than normal when people find out they can’t actually afford it and can’t qualify for private loans so they can’t pay for everything. There should be sticker shock early on, but I think there’s a lot of not realizing the gravity of the situation or heads buried in the sand, but there will come a point where tuition is due and you’ll either have it or not.

I agree, as I don't think the American education system does really anything to address financial literacy, so most people are going into these big commitments uninformed. I'm willing to be more people don't understand the loan contracts they sign than do.

I may have seen this post, or another similar one? Basically the OP/some responders did not know that you still pay tuition during your clinical year, even though the tuition page on every school's website would have spelled that out for you...

Yeah totally possible. My own class lost someone after the first or second week, she got cold feet based on the finances. I don't think the school filled her seat but I could have just not known since it was so early on. And that's before the private loans obviously.

Man, I could not imagine how destroyed I'd be if I made it 2-3 years through vet school only to then realize that I couldn't get a private loan to finish it out. And with how much personal/family circumstances could change in a short 1-2 years, and private loans needing a cosigner (at least mine did)....

Yup my mistake. They knew summer 3rd year was $33k but not that 4th year also carried a tuition charge.

I think the only time I am a little annoyed at people who don't give up seats is if they only applied because they can and have absolutely no intention of going to the school (I have met a few) and that irritates me because that really can change if you get an acceptance or not and the only reason they applied is to say they got into 10 schools. But overall most people holding on to an acceptance because they are thinking through life stuff is totally understandable and should be thought out! It's a big commitment.
Also going to University of Arizona, I am not stranger to fear mongering about how we do things. I can't say it is better or worse than other places, but I feel like when I talk to my colleagues at other schools. We are learning pretty comparable things and they are constantly improving things for the next years.

For real. I mean I had a 'grasp' on the cost and knew I was potentially looking at a lifetime of loans, but I still don't think I really fully understood how heavy that would be? It's easy to say sure, I'll just pay on these loans for life, whatever. I think it is hard to understand how the loans actually affect you until you are in a position where you need to get a new car, are trying to qualify for a mortgage, etc. Or until you're in your late 20s/early 30s and seeing all the things your friends can do that you probably won't be in a financial spot to do for a decade or more. Or until you see your husband's 401k compared to yours and you're at like a tenth of what he is at. And so on.

Responding to myself (lol) but I guess the only way to ensure this wouldn't happen to you would be to take out private loans first, then move to federal loans for your last 1-2 years or so

The fact that there’s a yearly cap on federal and it’s not just a total aggregate cap will hopefully make people realize the reality before they get too far in. Can you imagine if someone used all 200k the first two years then had to fund the rest? As much as I hate the BBB changes, it is going to force people to face the reality and find a solution earlier in the process.

The person on the APVMA Facebook asking how much you got paid for working during clinical rotations sent me

My old man dog had a little mass (2.37mm) removed right before I had the baby because it was giving me an icky feeling. It came back as an aggressive amelanotic cutaneous melanoma. So now I get to take him to medical oncology for staging +/- the melanoma GD3 vaccine with a newborn baby. Financially this is going to be rough. But I rescued this dog when I was 18, he is otherwise healthy besides some well controlled OA, and he is very special to me so I think it’s worth it.

Have you considered calling some of the other private practices on the area for a quote for staging? When I was there, I had an adrenalectomy and other follow up care done on my dog at a private practice instead of the school. Granted I was given a vet courtesy discount you might not get as a student so I’m not sure if it would be cheaper or not, but it would almost certainly be a more efficient appointment with a baby in tow to go to a private clinic vs dealing with the rigmarole of a vet school appointment…just something to think about.

Sorry you and the old guy are having to deal with this but I’m glad you caught it early when it was small!

This is honestly a really good idea. I’m going to call around tomorrow and see if I can get the staging done any cheaper. I think I can only get the GD3 through the vet school and that’s thousands most likely so saving anywhere will help. Thank you so much for the suggestion.
