Update post tree cutting: Pretty sure I got poison ivy. The next to last tree we cut had dead-looking vines wrapped around the trunk and now both of my forearms have raised, itchy, red rashes right where they would have come in contact with the cut vines as I carried the logs to throw across the fence.
Update to my update: I’m almost certain it’s poison ivy now…my itch has intensified to a constant low level hum of an itch (which is super annoying) and my dad also now a swollen and itchy eye now too. He wore long sleeves and gloves but must have rubbed his eye or something after handling that tree. He’s at urgent care now getting a steroid shot and I’m about to go buy new hydrocortisone cream for myself because I noticed what I dug out of the cabinet to use expired in 2009. Yikes. But at least my rash is limited to my arms unlike my dad.

Now I want to know how many times you moved with that tube of cream 🤣
I went to undergrad in 2008. I presume I bought it then because I don’t think I’d have taken it from my parents house to college?
1. Dorms to an apartment in 2009.
2. Switched from a third floor apartment to a first floor apartment in the same building in 2009 because my dog broke his leg and was on crate rest for 8 weeks and I didn’t want to carry him up the stairs for two months. Does that count?
3. Moved from the first floor apartment to house my parents bought for vet school in the same town in 2011.
4. Went 10 hours away for internship in 2015.
5. Residency, a 30 hour move in 2016.
6. First “real” job in the mid-south in 2019.
7. Back home to my current location from 2021 to now.

So seven. Yep.

And you never forgot the hydrocortisone. Impressive!

I was apparently very dedicated to bringing along a medication I clearly seldomly use.

I go through the dog ‘pharmacy’ every so often and toss expired meds, but I keep the hydrocortisone in my bathroom and clearly I don’t go through there often.

Hi there! I am a current senior in college, and I just finished applying to vet school. I applied to 14 vet schools. I was rejected by 10, waitlisted at 3, and accepted to one. The one I was accepted to is Ross, which I absolutely love. I wouldn't have applied to Ross if I didn't love Ross. Now, the problem is I have a friend who applied to roughly the same number of schools as me and even applied to some of the same schools, and she got into 4 or 5 schools, waitlisted at the majority, and rejected from rarely any. She has been constantly telling me about how "difficult it is to choose which school to go to" and how "I'm lucky because I only have one to choose from". On top of that, she specifically told me she didn't apply to Ross because she knows she "could get into a US school". When I got into Ross after all these rejections, I was so relieved. But now, I'm struggling to even feel happy about getting in. I just feel like a big idiot because I only got into 1, and it was Ross. I know that it only takes one, and "vet school is vet school," but I can't help but feel this pressure that all my peers are going to vet schools, and they will be looking at me because I only got into Ross, and I couldn't get into a US school. I am waiting on two of my waitlists (LMU and Western) to see if I get off the waitlist. If I get off the waitlist at LMU, I think I would go there, too, but I haven't even weighed my options. I think I'm overthinking this, but could someone talk me off a ledge?
Congratulations!

You're going to be DOCTOR DaisytheDonkey in four years! :cat:

I do 1099 vaccine clinics and W O W do I owe a lot of taxes since I increased how many I was doing last year so my quarterly taxes were not enough (since it’s based on my 2024 when I had just started doing them)
Our summer scholars paycheck was a “non-service fellowship” so I owed taxes on about $7200 of income that had nothing withheld. Thankfully my education credit offset most of that 😂

I had a freakout in October when I realized that the amount being taken out of my extra/overtime case reading was a flat 22%, and my actual tax bracket is quite a bit higher than that. I calculated that, based on my estimated earnings for the year, I would probably owe like $13,000 extra in taxes, and my CPA confirmed I was about right. I scrambled and had a ton taken out of my check the last couple months of the year, which is a privilege to be able to do and still bring in enough to live on. I ended up getting a small refund last week, but only because I was so aggressive at handing them money in November and December.

Ya know. In other countries, this is all generally handled on the back end from what I understand. There's no reason this shouldn't be automatically done by the government

My (English) husband has said several times that he does not understand why they aren't automatically done

I don’t understand why bonuses and things like my pay for surplus cases are withheld at different rates anyway. Like I know the IRS categorizes them differently, but in the end income is income…Lower income people hate that bonuses are withheld at higher rates than their regular checks, and at higher incomes they’re not withheld enough which is also a problem. Maybe just withhold everything the right amount?

Don't get me started on tax rates across different types of incomes. We don't want this thread banished to SPF.

Now, the problem is I have a friend
This sounds like your 'friend' needs to take a bite of the humble cookie before going into a profession that will do it for her.

And congrats on getting into vet school! At the end of the day (or four years) you are going to be a vet. The name on your degree matters so much less than the knowledge in your brain, your clinical skills, and the way you conduct yourself. I met a fourth year from Ross who was doing her clinical rotations at our teaching hospital and she was skilled as all heck.

Unfortunately it sounds like one of the students was spearheading this (per a video shared on this doc’s insta).

That's fine. But anyone that presented any sort of threat to a staff member or student should absolutely have charges brought against them.

The student who spear-headed this should also have some sort of consequences if they were directly involved in any sort of negative, illegal action

i was getting into discussions with people in the comments. someone claimed all the students were lying and multiple people asked for "proof" from the students.

Ok.

Ah. Yes. Victims. Notorious liars, the lot of them.

2FA (particularly Microsoft Authenticator) is garbage garbage garbage, the worst program ever, whoever invented it needs to be permanently imprisoned. I've been on a conquest for months to get my school to give me an alternative login method to get into my account. I care less than 0% about how it adds "extra security". I don't have a phone I bring to class and as a result, most of the time I can't see any emails (or basically anything other than coursework) from the university due to being locked out, as the 2FA is triggered EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to access a new page on my account. The IT support told me to just "buy a phone to bring to class" but it's kind of insane to assume I can just go buy a phone on a whim. Honestly, I could go on a separate rant about how it seems most people involved in vet school (staff and other students) assume you are financially well off, I struggle with rarely getting to participate in any club or social events because they all have a cost (usually 10-25 dollars per event, which doesn't sound like much, but for someone who has to work to pay for school I just can't- seems most other students are on loans and as a result they always have access to a little bit of fun money through that). For example, there is a gala later this semester for all vet students that nearly everyone goes to and raves about, but the ticket was 25 dollars and I would have also had to buy a new outfit to fit the "red carpet" dress code. I don't even have half the gear you're supposed to have for school itself honestly (such as steel-toe gumboots, I couldn't afford so for all anatomy labs I temporarily repurposed my zookeeper boots from work).

Anyway, I'm going to keep sending in requests until they let me get a Yubikey to use as 2FA.

A year or two ago my company had a complete and total outage for 2-3 days because they had to reset something in the system due to a ‘cyberthreat’, but all of the two factor login options required existing access to the system. Couldn’t verify identity by email because we couldn’t log in to our computers to get to emails Our phone numbers were virtual WiFi based numbers that required being logged in to the system too. And whatever the other options were acted the same. So we literally couldn’t log in to work for over a day and the solution was for every employee (all 11,000 of us) to just repeatedly call IT all day and hope you were the lucky one who got through so they could manually let you in to the system. It took days to get everyone fixed and people had to call at random times of day to get through. My call was at like 11 pm. They did let those of us who wanted one get a MFAtoken after that.

My insurance company is claiming a doctors office is in network even though they’re out of network on my plan so they’re refusing to reimburse me
Update: They thought I was going to a clinic in El Paso, TX when I live in Michigan because the clinics have the same name

This is the problem with computer automation. A human would have looked at that and called yoy

PETA has now gotten involved with the horses
Insanity, the whole thing. Personally, the way that veterinarian talks about euthanasia is really unsettling to me. And then refusing to take accountability for the actions (threats) that occurred due to their inflammatory language. SMDH.

ETA: I hope everyone affected at WSU is okay. With everything going on in the world, focusing on and attacking a terminal surgery class (and anyone associated!) that is up to ethics standards is just…… a choice.

Buying a house is expensive and stressful and renting seems near impossible with three pets. That's my rant for the day.
Yes, feel you. I bought and relocated over 1000 miles last year, it’s not for the faint of heart. You’ll get through it - if you can, give yourself extra time to relocate and get settled!

Unfortunately (and I know you know lol) it’s a common talking point. Imagine my pikachu face when I, a Jew descended from holocaust survivors, got called a holocaust supporter for saying “hey, maybe we shouldn’t compare the systematic torture and killing of minorities by an authoritarian regime to eating steak”

@_rae_ and I chatted about this personally last night, but the Nazis absolutely used and weaponized animal cruelty rhetoric and people need to be aware how vitriolic this can become, especially with the wider scope of the human rights catastrophes that too many of the hard-core animal rights people ignore.

If someone’s animal rights page isn’t intersectional, then they can get out my face with their performative BS.

Edited bc typo.

WSU should just start bringing in truckloads of horses on their way to slaughter and suddenly there will be a home for every horse that needs one I guess!
there’s fundraisers now to get the horses to sanctuary. i guess they didn’t think that far ahead…because wdym now you’re asking the public for $5000+ for the horses when they’re not even guaranteed to go to you?

there’s no guarantee these horses aren’t going to slaughter. the guarantee is just that the school cannot have them. there is no concrete proof that they will be released by the USDA.
