I’d probably take the closer option that pays better…besides the time investment, gas to drive that far daily really adds up and eats into your salary, especially if the world events continue on their current trajectory and oil prices keep rising.
I feel like that's where I'm starting to lean the more I think about it. It's just so frustrating when the only think holding me back is distance!! I totally forgot about this crazy world and the gas prices going up too :|

Idk what to do with myself this summer. I unexpectedly got an externship with a humane society. It's specifically for veterinary students, so I feel like I'll get far more experience that is directly related to being a veterinarian (i.e., doing physical exams, surgery). The one thing holding me back is the distance. During rush hour it'll take me 40-50 minutes each way and I already don't love driving.

My other option is to work as a veterinary assistant. The clinic is 10 minutes away and pays $3 more per hour. My only worry is that I'll be stuck doing assistant things and not get to watch surgeries, listen to the vets' talk to clients, and be involved with other everyday tasks expected of a veterinarian. Maybe my perception of being a vet assistant is wrong though since I've been in wildlife medicine for so long. The externship is giving me 3 days to decide and I'm stressing :,)
Maybe if you mention to the doctors at the clinic that you are interested in that type of stuff, they'll try and fit it in with you. I was an assistant in undergrad for a summer and the ortho vet knew I was prevet, so she would have me on her appointments and let me watch all her surgeries, all her patient talks, and she taught me a bunch of things outside my scope, such as reading radiographs, doing cytocentesis, and how to calculate prescriptions. There's a chance they won't do it, but asking is worth a shot!

As a surgery deficient ER doctor, I was going to say do the humane society position cause I feel like you'd potentially get the ability to actually do surgery at some point.

But then Jayna came in with some really good points. A good middle ground would be to see if you could establish a goal with the vet assistant position to be involved more heavily in one specific area i.e. surgery
That's a good point with the vet assistant job. I know they like having veterinary students over the summer, so hopefully they'll be more willing to let me do stuff that I want to learn more about (like surgery).

It's hard to not feel like I'll be behind when my friends are getting summer jobs where they do more "future veterinarian" things. But I know I'm being dramatic lol

Bruhhhhh why is apartment management always USELESS.

called last week, the night before I left town for a school visit because my CEILING WAS LEAKING

did they fix it? NO. is it leaking again tonight? YES!!!!

why do I have to be an absolute Karen to them to get them to actually do their jobs????

I actually hate apartment complexes. I cannot WAIT to rent a house once I’m in school

I once called about a ceiling leaking quite a bit.
It took them multiple days to come fix it.
The best part? I had a middle floor apartment 😬. No idea how much damage they had to fix from the upper floor by the time they got to it

I once called about a ceiling leaking white a bit.

If you go back through my post history you’ll find a period of time where I had no hot water in my shower for six weeks, and when they finally came to fix it, they left my front door wide open for an extended period of time and I panicked that my cats had run away.

I now live in a duplex with a private landlord and every time we’ve had even a minor plumbing issue we’ve had someone out within 48 hrs (also I LOVE their plumber he’s a plumber by day, graphic designer by night, and he adores my cats).

No fr like this isn’t my fist rodeo

At my last ****hole apartment the bathroom ceiling caved in TWICE (because they painted over the water stain instead of fixing the problem) and caused an infestation of house flies. I’m not doing this **** again

Omg I’m so glad your cats were ok!!! I’d go absolutely ballistic if they came in when my birds were out.

I’m glad you are in a better situation now! The person who I will be renting from for school’s husband is a construction manager so I think any problems that do rise up will be able to be taken care of too hopefully 🤞🏻
