rate equation from reaction

Hi this is on Kaplan notecard C35

What is the reaction rate of the following one step reaction?

2A +B -->A2B

their answer is: r=k[A]^2

However, I've always thought the exponents in the rate equation could only be experimentally determined and therefore can not be deduced from the equation. Is this true?

If the reaction is elementary then their answer make sense. I think that they refer elementary reaction (by saying one step reaction).However it is still unlikely to three molecules collide to form the reaction. Your reasoning is right.
