I went to Penn's dairy orientation today and LOVED it!

I mostly signed up because it was an opportunity to meet some classmates before the real orientation started, but I really really enjoyed today. I might actually seriously consider becoming a dairy vet...

That's how I felt after that ... we had a 2 day program back then though...
It was pretty neat. I have since lost the urge though.

A couple semesters of vet school does that to you
Now everytime they mention large animal diseases and stuff i 🙄.... i think it was nutrition that ended that for me. I just couldn't get interested in the difference between hay and straw and all that nonsense (can't even remember any of the names... it has all been repressed).

Are you small animal?

I know that part of the reason why i like it is that we are all on an even playing field. I didn't tech at a small animal clinic and my fractious cat/dog handling skills leave much to be desired.

Yeah, at this point I guess I am small animal, and I have no tech experience, not sure about my handling skills, or other skills, or my knowledge, or .....

I have given up thinking about all my inadequacies. 😀

I have many things to teach you!!!! lol Handling dogs and cats is my forte. I am VERY good at it. I'm not modest about it because I am not so good at many things  Gotta play up my strengths 😛

Yeah, I wish I could say I was a fantastic technician, but I'm not all that great. I'm not bad, just not amazing either. But we can't be good at everything, right?

 I didn't say I'm a great tech. Bahahahaha!!! I am too unorganized for it. I have to write myself notes all the time. I am just really good at handling the animals.

SnowyRox - I have to say our Dairy and Swine professors are hands down the nicest professors at Penn. Even if you don't end up doing Food Animal, they would be great for a summer job or research.

Nevermind.

I would totally take you up on this offer if you lived closer 👍.

My strength is taking exams. Which is awesome and all until you realize that it's not actually a practical skill...

Awesome! The rising 2nd years said there are a few job openings for first years there and I was thinking about applying. I love being out in the countryside 😍.

I'm trying to teach my naughty cat some tricks in an attempt to keep him out of trouble for a little. We're starting with sit and tonight he actually sat on command for his treats! He's a smart kitty so hopefully he'll keep it up.

A local cat rescue is getting a ton of baby rats for some reason (based on the pictures, there must be close to 15).

If I end up living with my boyfriend at the end of the month, he said I am allowed to have a pair.

I've wanted rats for several years now. When I was finally in the position to consider getting a small pet, I couldn't commit to the space requirements so I got a pair of gerbils instead.

If I get a job in the city or wind up unemployed, I will be living with the boyfriend. If I end up getting a job elsewhere, I won't be able to commit.

Still, I am darn excited.

I had rats for about two months two years ago and they were awesome! My favorite pet besides dogs! Too bad my mom wasn't too happy when she found out about them..

Good for you! A professor here uses clicker training on her cat and dog. She is quite famous. If I can find the cat you-tube, maybe I will post it later for some more inspiration.

so i just returned from europe and there was a huge surprise for me at work! the doctors at work all pitched in and got me a brand new welch allyn tycos dual head stethoscope 🙂 it's blue and has my first initial/last name and upenn '16 engraved on the name tag!!!! and they all signed a card for me. i was SO surprised and shocked by it.

:biglove:

i'm gonna miss working so much!

Congrats Sunnex! That's really cool.

My rave:

I taught my deaf cat to sit, using Cheerios as motivation, because I thought it'd be hilarious to have my deaf cat do stuff. It is! Have fun, cats that do tricks are the best.

Personal rave: my mom is visiting, our white coat ceremony is tomorrow, and then I start classes!

Ivy had a long day and was too tired to complain about cuddling and pictures today, so I took advantage of it. 😀

Lol. The only thing that makes me sad about UK Starbucks is their severe lack of seasonal drinks (ie my pumpkin spice lattes 🙁)
Pulled quote from another thread. 😎

You really need to try the Smashing Pumpkin Shot(alcoholic) 😍😍

1/3 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
1/3 oz Bailey's® Irish cream
1/3 oz Goldschlager® cinnamon schnapps

Add ingredients to a small shaker with ice. Stir. Strain into a shot glass.

Shake a tad amount of nutmeg or cinnamon(can't remember which right now) on top, or drink without. Either way it is delicious!! :biglove:

She's 5 months now! Everybody comments on how big she is already. You should see their faces when I tell them her brother beats her by about 15 lbs already.

She's doing great! I get a lot of compliments from the trainers because she is so well behaved. Usually their shepherds are more all over the place and independent ("who do you think you are to tell me what to do"), but she's awesome. Loves the buses, sleeps through all of my classes, barely pulls on the leash... Even at home, where she used to be a little monster, she's great now. Doesn't beg for food even when it's right next to her, no jumping on furniture.. I love this dog.

😍

We're now working on "find the door" and "find the stairs." 😀

PP, she's adorable!

I have an interview on Monday for a vet assistant position. FINALLY. A chance at a job in a veterinary field. I must thank Ky for this 😀 She told me the clinic may be hiring. I just had to be really patient.

I was all set to post a long rant because today right before lunch my boss told me they were going to sleep the one dog at work that I've truly gotten attached to since my dog passed. I spent my lunch break sitting with him outside and he leaned up against my legs smiling the whole time. We had a meeting to discuss why certain dogs get resources over others and the head of behavior said Sampson was going to be slept because she doesn't trust him and I started sobbing. When I was walking him down to be euthed I stopped a member of behavior to say "are you really going to sleep this dog that I love who lets me do all the bad things you shouldn't do to fearful dogs without any reaction". He went to find the head of behavior and she sat with me and Sampson outside. I showed that I can get in his face and hug his head and he smiles. She told me to take him and set him up in a quieter kennel. I'm so happy for Sampson! (so many run on sentences)

tl;dr I saved the first dog that I've loved in a few months at work today. Here's his cute face.

 This is always soo sad! I hate it when I get attached to a dog everyone else says can't be trusted or trained. I'm so glad that they gave you a chance to save him and he proved you were right.

This week is over! (Well, except for GRE on Sunday, but, whatever.)

Past 32 hours, I have slept 4 hours, worked 20 hours, spent 2 hours at urgent care, and eaten a bowl of cereal, half of a burrito, and a piece of cake. So excited to sleep in tomorrow!

He reminds me of my handsome pup. He's got that big mastiff head and we rescued him from someone who was gonna put him down for aggression 🙄. Sweetest dog I've ever met in my entire life. Glad you helped Sampson!

😱 That cage looks gorgeous! I've always wanted ferrets, but my housing isn't conducive to them. (way too many ways they could get into trouble, very old houses, think college houses) That and I don't have the money right now to get an awesome setup like that!

Such a great ending! 😍 Way to go Hedgie! 😀

If I could I would totally give him a home. He looks so sweet in the photo. Any dog can seem aggressive and mean when put in a bad situation. (Heck most humans do too!)

I ran into a 2nd year vet student on Thursday and she is going to teach me her cat-whispering ways next week at the clinic!

😀

Yay for awesome upper-classmen!

Boyfriend just nonchalantly mentioned he's gonna pay the 5k left on my truck loan by January. 😱
Um.... Ok????!!!!! :soexcited:
We don't share bills so it was surprising/awesome. 😀

:soexcited: :soexcited:
My best friend since we were 2 just had her baby girl! It's such a weird feeling to think that WE were only babies when we met. So proud of her!
