I received a C- in Physics II as an undergrad. I am going to re-take this class, but if I take it at my local CC it will cost ~$320, whereas it will cost ~$1,700 at the nearest large public university. My question is, do medical schools look down on a pre-req taken at a CC, and if so, is it worth to drop the extra $1,400 to re-take the class at a university?

Sorry if this has already been answered, a search didn't turn up the exact question I have.

Do you know where you will be applying to medical school? Some schools will NOT accept community college credits (e.g. Johns Hopkins), some frown upon them especially if you have already enrolled in a four year school, and some will gladly accept them. There is a full spectrum. I recommend you consult the MSAR.

Unless you are applying to DO schools with grade-replacement, how will retaking Physics II help? Isn't C already passing? I got a C in Physics II, and have received multiple acceptances to top/mid-tier MD schools this cycle. Community college classes will be significantly easier than counterparts at large research universities, so my suggestion is to save your money.

I would take the CC course. If you are supporting yourself then $1400 is a lot of money! As far as medical schools, do you have one that is your absolute dream? When I was looking around, there were many schools that do accept CC credit. Unless you have you sights set on a school that doesn't accept them (or your in-state medical school does not) then I wouldn't worry too much and just build your school list off the ones that do accept CC credit.

Why are you retaking it? If you're worried about knowing the material for the MCAT, surely any of the free online classes available now would be preferable. Or just focused studying of MCAT materials. If you're interested in DO grade replacement, the pre-osteo board would be a more logical place to post this question.

Just trying to figure out what your motivation is before people give you all kinds of advice as to what you should do!

Many schools require at least a C if not a C+ in all pre-reqs....a C- won't cut it.

Thanks for the replies. I've already taken the MCAT, so learning the material isn't my primary motivation for taking the course. As kyamh said, a C- is not considered a passing grade for many schools, so I will have to retake the course regardless. Also, getting an A will provide a slight bump to my sGPA, which is on the low side. It's a slight increase that in my opinion is worth $300, but not $1,700.

I'm an AZ resident.
