Here is my situation:
I was accepted into a medical school, and then took a year off before starting. However, due to unfortunate circumstances (not disciplinary), I need to reapply through the AMCAS.

What do medical schools expect from students who are reapplying like this (havene't failed out, etc) and are there any things I should be careful of. Also, what types of things should I write in that section that asks me to explain my previous matriculation.

I guess it depends on what happened - why exactly can't you matriculate at your original school? Did you have to move back home to be with a sick family member? Did you get married and move elsewhere? Did the med school get put on probation?

This happened to a friend of mine. He got accepted into U Pitt. Then, his Mom became really ill and he didn't want to leave California, and tried to see if the school would let him defer (which they wouldn't...some schools don't consider family illnesses/ tragedy a reason to defer...has to be academic). Took a year off, reapplied again, got into Pitt again and UCSF. So now he's starting his second year at UCSF. Life happens. I don't think any school is going to hold that against you.

Exactly. And if they hold it against you, you don't want to go there anyways.
