I graduated in the Winter with a BS in Psychobiology. I applied last year to pharm school but didn't get in... I had a cum GPA of around 2.7 and a sci GPA of around 2.6 (goodness), didn't take the PCAT. I volunteered at a pharmacy for five years, had many ex-curriculars (both pharm and non-pharm related). I'm now deciding what I should do in terms of increasing my chances of admission the next time around. I am currently working at a hospital as a clinical lab tech and volunteering at a local pharmacy.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding the topic of re-taking classes over at a CC vs a state? If I do take them over at a state, do I need to go through the whole application process as if I were entering as a freshman? What else can I do to increase my chances of getting offered admission next year? Any tips? Thanks in advance!

do open university. but ya, retake ur classes that u got C's, D's, or F's in. Take some "easy" science class to boost that GPA up. Pharmcas wont know the difference and the Adcom normally doesn't care either. gl

Well, with a GPA like that I would be much more surprised if you were accepted. You definitely need to retake them, and retake them at some place with a good reputation (otherwise there may be thoughts such as "yeah, she went to the school where this subject is a joke to get a good grade because she failed at a regular school" in admissions committee's head). But I am known to be strict. 😀

Besides raising your GPA, which is hard, take the PCAT and do good. That'll at least get your app looked at by PCAT school instead of tossed. I'll be blunt, you will probably NEVER get in at a non PCAt school with a sub-3.0 GPA.

Let's look at your application piecewise that determines whether you get an interview offer or not.:

Ec: great with the pharmacy experience
PCAT: N/A, but you better take it
GPA: Bingo!

I am not trying to spark a CC v university debate here, but everyone should at least admit that there's at least an iota of stigma related to CC courses as there's a difficulty in assessing the CC's worth. So, I would try to work your GPA issues at a university, but plenty of people have been accepted into pharmacy school with recent CC credits.

You need to examine the causes and forces that led to your lower GPA and rectify them before you get a similar or barely improved GPA when you apply.
