So if I am very humble and my mentor says I have a lack of confidence and writes this in the rec letter, is this a bad trait?

You don't want a LOR to say that you lack confidence. That's not going to be viewed favorably.

You should try to give your mentor a sample of a strong LOR from an American perspective so he or she knows what's expected.

Sure, I think that works, as long as the rest of the LOR is strong.

That's NOT good!

Humility and lack of confidence aren't the same thing. Wouldn't hurt to ask your LOR writer, but be prepared for an unwanted answer.
