Recomendation Letter Predicament!!!!!

Ok, I've been working at this private pharmacy for two years now. I'm a clerk/cashier but I do a lot of what a pharm tech would do since they don't have a technician. We have two pharmacist and I know them both for the same amount of time, 2 years.

So, since I'm now applying to pharmacy school, I asked one of the pharmacist for a rec. letter. He said he could not do it since he only knew me for a small amount of time and that I should ask the other pharmacist, the pharmacy manager/owner, not him.

I then asked my PIC but he said he would only do it if I would give him a sample or template of a LOR. He mentioned that he has never done one before, had no idea how to do one, and had no time to start one.

Worst part is that, these are the only two pharmacists I know!

What are my options here. Is there such thing as a LOR template or sample LORs??!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please!!! Thanks in advance!

Regards,
TINKER

Yes, use Google for sample LORs. You can tailor that to your situation by "writing your own LOR" so to speak and then having your preceptor use that. This is actually fairly common, as retail pharmacists are busy and don't have much time to think of what to write for LORs.

I will echo this sentiment. One of my LOR's was written by me and he just signed it. He didn't know what to write so he just asked me to. It's surprisingly hard, IMO. But I have talked to several of my classmates and this seems to be very common.

Also, the PharmCas lor kind of leads them through it step by step, they rate you in certain areas then there is an area for comments, that is where the sample LOR will be useful, and them knowing your volunteer activities etc...so provide them with that information.

For my LORs, I provided my CV as well as a detailed outline of why I wanted to do pharmacy including my relevant experiences, my plans for the for the future, and how my work under that person was relevant to my pursuit of pharmacy school. Give whomever is writing your letters some direction, or it may be a very difficult/inconvenient task for them.

Wow what an a-hole! I was able to get a LOR form a professor I only knew 3 months. You've worked with this person for 2 years and nothing. wow.

That's fraud. Better hope PharmCas doesn't find out.

Not sure I agree. Someone else can fill out a check for me and I can just sign it. I have never signed a contract that I myself wrote. I asked for a LOR, it was more convenient for him if I wrote it and he just signed it. I can't quite find the fraud...

I've known several professors and pharmacists who have explicitly told the applicant to just write the letter themselves. It's not fraud, it's a common practice. As an above posted mentioned, they sign off on what you write.

If you write "and he saved an orphan once", it won't get signed.

Unless you did save an orphan, in which case kudos.

Any tips on writing my own LOR would be great!

You're not going to find LOR templates specifically for pharmacy. If they want you to write your own LOR, then you'll need to get a good feel for what ANY LOR consists of and adapt it to your needs. Essentially, you need to address some key points about yourself: what you've accomplished, how you've helped others/ proven yourself trustworthy, and why you deserve to be a PharmD student.

Don't say anything that you can't back up or articulate well, and keep the wording realistic and positive.

Hope that helps.

O_O I found myself in a similar situation last year! Was your pharmacist an older person? When I asked my pharmacy manager, he said he had never written one in his life so he told me to write it and he would just sign it. I didn't want any adcoms to notice the similar writing styles between my personal statement and this LOR so I had my friend add a bit of her flair/style to make the LOR more unique.

So...... just offer to write one, have him read over it, see if any changes need to be made, and have him sign for it!

EDIT: Also, there's a short questionnaire thing attached to the LOR that they need to fill out. I found my old one and took a screen shot of it. link
