I'm planning ahead about asking professors for recommendations, but I'm confused about how many I need! I know that the VMCAS wants 3, of which 1 or 2 are vets.

Davis, then, says that for applying to the DVM/PhD program, you need "Letters of recommendation submitted on behalf of the applicant for acceptance into the Graduate Group (please note: these letters are in addition to the three (3) letters of evaluation required for the DVM application)."

Does that mean a grand total of 6 letters needed for your application, or is just that some people should send their letters twice (IE, the vmcas letter and PhD letter are the same, just going to different people)? What do you think?

hi - yes, you can basically have up to 6 letters if you wish (3 for the dvm application and 3 for the graduate school). keep in mind that at ucd the grad group admits you SEPARATELY from the vet school. so, these letters should address your ability to be a grad student specifically. your dvm letters will be seen by all the vet school adcoms - the phd letters will not be necessarily seen by them at all. for davis and colorado, i only had 4 recommenders - the three for vet school were my vet, my boss (a professor of med), and my mentor (for undergrad research); the three for phd were my boss again (to say what a hard worker i am), my mentor again, and another professor i did research with. i got into csu dvm/phd, and ranked high at ucd ecology grad group, so the lor's must have worked... good luck

Thank you! THat's very helpful. I think I'll have my undergrad mentor on both PhD and DVM apps, and then a splattering of vets and research on the others. I really appreciate your help clarifying things...

ps, congrats on CSU... and you're from Seattle, right? yeehaw! (so'm I, although I'm relocated to east coast for undergrad)

seattle rocks!! i had to come back after two years of undergrad (and traveling the world), i missed it so much!! leaving here is the only sad part about going to vet school. good luck on the applications, and pm when it gets closer to submission time if you want...
