I have completed by AMCAS application and would like to have LORs ready to go before the secondaries get here, but I'm not sure how the process works. Please keep in mind I do NOT have a pre-med committee at my college.

My main question is: Do the letters need to be sent directly from the professor to the medical school or can the letter writer give them to me and then I just make copies and send to the medical schools as needed?

If I cannot send the letters myself it will be a pain to keep contacting the professors and have them send the letter to each new school as required.

Any info is appreciated.

i don't think you're technically supposed to see your letters. your choices are either to contact each writer every time you need letters sent out, which can be a pain in the butt and often leads to delays for getting your LORs submitted, OR to sign up with a letter-sending service. these are companies that will take care of everything for you. your profs will send their letters directly to the service. when you need letters sent to a school, just let the service know and they'll send out a packet for you. you will have to pay a bit for one of these services. i think it's about $200, but i'm not sure. someone else on the board will know and will also have websites for them.

More likely than not, your school has a letter service that takes in all the letters, photocopies them, and sends them off to schools as needed.

Otherwise...yeah, you'd probably have to have your professors send letter after letter after letter...I've never heard of this though.

I had my profs give me the letters in sealed envelopes signed across the seal, and then I sent the packet of letters off myself. I never had a problem with the schools I applied to.

Yeah, that situation sounds like it's rather inconveniencing...the Office of Biomedical Professions at my university really keeps everything going smoothly for us. Like the others, I would assume that there is some sort of organization in place to help you out, whether at school or for pay. What you even could do is pay someone to do it for you...someone to whom letters can be given, who could act as your secretary. It would have to be someone you really trust, of course.
