Hey Guys just a few questions...I would really appreciate some clarification on this as I cannot seem to find an exact answer anywhere...

For Pikesville COM (KYCOM), do they only give acceptance to in state rural applicants? I am a Florida resident who would like to try for admission there as I am really interested in working with healthcare in rural areas. However, I do not want to fill out a secondary if I won't even be considered.

Also, what schools do you guys suggest I add that does not favor in state students? For instance I am from Florida but I want to add some more schools that would consider me even though I am out of state.

Thank you guys so much for your help! Good luck with the application season and your interviews!

I highly recommend you get the DO school guide and look at OOS acceptance.

Nothing against KYCOM, but have you ever been to Pikeville, KY?

There is a BIG difference between 'rural' medicine; and Appalachia. As part of your selection process, you might want to consider the location you will be living in for 4 years.

Yeah, there are lots of DO schools not in FL that are private and could care less where you come from.

Pikeville is only one of several schools in the Southern US that emphasizes rural health care. William Carey, LMU-DCOM, and Ga-PCOM all have an emphasis on rural medicine.

Of course, since I am at William Carey, I see how strongly it is emphasized here. BTW, We do have many Floridians in our 1st and 2nd year classes.

TouroCOM-NY doesn't have an in-state preference; it also doesn't really emphasize rural medicine.

If you are interested in places emphasizing rural medicine, you can also check to see which schools make you do a rural medicine rotation during your clinical years e.g. LECOM - Seton Hill.

WVSOM is big on producing physicians in rural medicine (Source) and I dont think they have an in-state preference (I was accepted and I'm from over 400 miles away).

Thank you all for your input and help. I will look into some more schools and go from there. I appreciate the quick responses 🙂
