I just found out I was rejected for an interview at a place I did an away rotation at. 😡 Should I email the program director and ask why I was rejected and if they would reconsider my application? Or should I not waste my time since they already rejected me and probably wouldn't rank me even if I interviewed there? Thanks.

That's rough. How did the away rotation go? I suppose that an away rotation does not guarantee an interview, however it would seem courteous for them to do so. Personally, I would move on. I'm sure you'll get into a very good program. Do you mind telling which program you are talking about?

Just remember that most of the rejections and interview offers are based strictly on numbers at this point. ERAS allows programs to make sweeping cuts with the filters (ie >220 boards Step 1) and then send rejections without seeing your name.

Most likely your rejection was just numbers based.

I was also just rejected at a program where I did an away. I was pretty surprised since I considere myself a fairly strong applicant anyway and I had a very good rotation there. I got a good evaluation and the senior residents were very enthusiastic about me applying to their program. Oh well. i would just let it go and part your separate ways

I did an away elective and research at an institution and wasn't offered an invitation to interview. It sucks but I have moved on and am waiting for the rest of my offers to roll in. IMHO if I don't get an offer at a place, I look at it like it wasn't meant for me to be a resident there and I will wind up some place better!

ABSOLUTELY contact the attending and residents you worked with!! I'm a resident at a "top" (I hate those stratifications) pediatric residency program and the exact same thing happend to one of my co-residents. She told some of the residents she worked with who passed it on to the PD. The PD did not intend to reject her, personally apologized, and she matched here.

If you're nervous about contacting your attending/residents phrase the email in the following...."I just thought I would let you know, I was not invited to interview at ..... I'm disappointed, but confident that I'll match at strong program. I'll keep you posted." Guarantee you that any resident who worked with you for 2-4 wks wants to know this information. And if they thought you were good they will email or speak with their program director.

Also, a general post, if you email a resident during interview season telling them how badly you want to match at their program, be sure to email them if you don't match there and tell them where you'll be. We want to know!!

Chin up, the next few months will be rough, but have faith. I can't tell you how many programs rejected me, eventhough I had interviews at those "top" programs. Its random.
