Hey guys....

For those of you who interviewed early last year (i.e. August-November), how many of you got rejected after the interview? I know that early interviews are primarily granted to strong applicants, but does that mean that those are the applicants you are competing with or do most of them get accepted since they are stronger?

I had almost all my interviews before december. And I'm still on the "waiting-list" to all the schools that didn't accept me right away. They won't send you a "rejection" letter right away, they'll probably just put you in their limbo. If you interview before december and don't get an acceptance by Feb, then I'd probably say that's a rejection.

So you're saying that your chances drop drastically if you interview prior to December but don't get that Dec 1 acceptance?

i interviewed twice in november and got two december acceptances...

i would think an early interview means that the seat is yours to lose...i could be wrong though, schools do interview quite a few more people than they can accept during the first cycle

What you're saying doesn't make sense. I'm a first time applicant and my view is schools don't just review applicants once right after interview in the entire process. If you're a strong applicant, they should keep reviewing until the classes are filled up. A friend of mine got 3 interviews and were on the "wait-list" for all 3. One still puts him on hold, one rejected him after awhile and the last one accepted him. I hope I am right. Btw, as people in the forum have said... keeping in touch with the admission to let them know you're still interested in the school will probably help.

Sure the schools continually review the applications and sure plenty of people who are waitlisted eventually get in.

However, if an early interview means that you are a strong applicant that looks good enough on paper to attend the school, then getting interviewed and not being accepted may just mean that they saw something during the interview that made them change their mind about you. Waitlisting an applicant is done because they have reservations about you and are hoping something better comes along or that out of the early applicants, the waitlisted applicant wasn't as desireable as the rest and they are waiting to hear back from the acceptances sent out to better candidates.

This is very key. Finding the right balance b/w letting them know how serious you are about attending their school, and not annoying the cr@p outta them is the hard part. BU demanded several emails to be sent just to stay on their wait-list.

Getting interviews before Dec. 1st definitely helps, but it is not acceptance for sure.

Last year, I scheduled all my interview before Dec.1st. and got 3 accepted, 3 waitlisted, and 2 rejections from public school.

This can happen at any time during the application cycle, not just only for early interview.

This is never true; no interviewee is guaranteed an acceptance to any school during any time in the application process.

As long as people are accepted from December 1 through the first day of orientation, it is impossible to know when your changes are best. The reason why early applications are more competitive is because schools DO begin accepting on December 1, so there are simply fewer seats as the year progresses. That's why vet school is so competitive, for instance; there are half as many of them as dental schools. Fewer spots, obviously fewer chances.

When I applied for the class of 2010 I had all my interviews done by November (started in late September after an early July application submission.) In the first week in December I was accepted by 4 schools and rejected by one. The one school that rejected me was actually my earliest interview (end of September.) If you're not what the school is looking for, you simply won't get in.

This statement is usually true but in the case of UOP if you interview before dec 1st you are pretty much in, and they will tell you that during the interview. Everyone in my interview group is in my class except one guy that was accepted but chose another school. Just dont fall asleep.

This is absolutely true. Everyone from my interview group is in my class, and I heard completely anecdotally that there was only 1 interviewee who didn't get an acceptance pre-dec 1.

Think about it this way. If you interview prior to December 1st you're going to be in the first round of reviews. Afterwards, everyone is reviewed on a rolling basis to fill what happens to be left. I interviewed at Columbia last year on Dec 8th and we were told there was something like 5 spots left, assuming the matriculation percentages from past years held up. Insane.
