Generallee when did you apply? My application just got to Loma Linda, so should I expect a long wait before I hear about a secondary or a rejection?

My app went out for Loma Linda in mid September and I heard late September of the rejection....so, it didn't take long....

Shouldn't take more than a few days if they really like you...They sent me their secondary two days after I saw "UNDER REVIEW" They had some homework for my professors. So I decided to withdraw...

Loma Linda rejected me without having sent them a secondary. In the rejection letter it said something along the lines like: We appreciate you interest in our school but we do not feel that you will be competitive enough for our program. To spare you the cost we are not sending you a secondary application.

my cummulate gpa is 3.1 and science is 3.0, biology B.s.
DAT 18/18/18

2nd time to apply
I already got rejection from Arizona and Indiana

damn i guess i have to applied the third time and go get a master degree in the mean time.

Got a rejection email from UNLV. Wow, that really sucked.

For those of you who have Yahoo Mail, make sure to check the Bulk/Spam folder, because that's where it ended up for me. The letter is kindly titled "REJECTION".

Best of luck to everyone.

It's blunt, but I'd rather have people reject me that way. It saves me from the panicy anticipation of thinking it may be an actual interview.

I got rejected from arizona and indiana quite awhile ago.

I got rejected from TEMPLE.

They said they got 3200 applicants and only have 125 seats, or something like that. I was like, whoa.

My gpa is 3.01, sci 2.96
DAT is 22/23/16

thats a big lie!

You wish it were a big lie. But this year its true. Nova and AZ are getting around 3000, so it makes sense Temple would get >3200. Lots of people who would have made it previous years won't get in this year. I mean just look at dentwannabe's DAT scores. A 22/23/16 would have been a lock even with a sub 3.0 sci GPA 3 years ago.

Its funny how the overall economy affects every little thing - like the number of dental school applicants. The dot-com crash of 2000 demolished the optimism previously placed in the growth and potential of quick internet startups. People now realize those fantastic stories of 22 year old billionaires are mere pipe dreams and now want jobs with more stability. And since dentistry offers stability, money, and easy hours its not a surprise so many people are applying.

I just hope most people aren't applying for the reasons I stated above. Its dishonest and a disservice to the job.

wow, this is depressing to hear. there goes my chance of getting in. 🙁

It's only depressing if you let it be. I like to think of it as a challenge. And I'm actually glad I'm applying in one of the toughest years, it makes success so much sweeter. Knowing that you competed against the best. That you truly deserve to be in dental school, instead of years in the past where dental schools were desperate to fill their seats.

Just do all you can, and let things play out. Not everyone who want to be a dentist will become one. The world needs teachers, janitors, doctors, even beggars - its all part of the balance. Everybody has a place and function in society.

well said but still depressing.. haha.. it's all good.. at least we know we gave it our all.. and if we don't get in this year.. we shouldn't give up on it if it is truely our passion... good luck everyone!

True, you should never give up on your passions. Otherwise you'll never amount to anything.

But you must be able to step back and look at yourself. I try to place myself in the shoes of the admissions officer and compare my stats to other applicants. If I don't get in this year it's my own fault. Every second I wasted socializing instead of studying is the simple answer.

Some people are blinded by their own egos and desires that they have trouble accepting their reality. It's like the ex-highschool football star who's now the manager of the local Walmart but still thinks he had a shot at the NFL. Now he's the angry parent at his son's football games.

Hey guys,

I was wondering for those of you who were rejected, if you could tell me what the letters detailed in terms of their cutoffs or averages this year. I'd really appreciate it, and sorry for the hassle.

And do you think that they consider religious background to make a decision on granting an interview or not till later?

Thanks!!

Here is what my letter stated the class averages were:

Science GPA: 3.36
Cumulative GPA: 3.43
DAT academic average: 19.27
DAT perceptual ability: 18.46
DAT total science: 19.34

I got rejected a day after my app got there with the following stats:

Science GPA: 2.8
Cumulative GPA: 2.8
DAT academic average: 26
DAT perceptual ability: 24
DAT total science: 25

I did a double major so thats why my GPA sucks but I took science courses and now my science is at 3.0 and will be 3.3 by spring. Stupid AADSAS won't send the updated grades until February.

I'm thinking about writing them a letter to reconsider. I know my GPA sucks but I have a valid reason with doing two degrees while other students were doign one. In addition to all that I have tons of work experience, an international background, 100 hours of observation, 3 pre-dental courses...etc.etc.etc

I'm not saying I deserve to be accepted but how in the world could I not be considered a competitive applicant and at least have my application looked at???

I find it very bad that they won't even spend 5 minutes to look past those 5 numbers above.

it seems that you guys aren't aware that Loma Linda the year prior had 5 students that were not 7th day adventists, and all 5 of those were Mormons.

Quit wasting your money hahaha.

Your DAT scores are good but Temple requires that you have a minimum science gpa of 3.0.

G'luck with other schools and the app. process.

hey, thanks for the info, and i think you've got nothing to lose if you do want to go there by writing a letter. other than a little time. i hope it works out for you....

this life we've chosen is hard to get a hold of.

Ok not a rejection post but along those lines

UG GPA= <2.5, don't ask, lack of focus/drive bla bla

Grad GPA (hard biology, no research): 3.85, completing spring '06

Lets say I get 20+ AA/TS on the 21st when I'm takin the DAT's

will the grad GPA override the UG during selection? (i know theres a separate column) Or do schools that weed out based on 3.0 or above only look at the UG?

so i'm one of those candidates who had a UG GPA between 2.5 and 3.0. i did a grad program, so the grad GPA does not supersede. all the classes get averaged, so you'll have an avged non-science and science GPA. whether dental schools will look at your grad GPA depends on the school. u need to ask the adcoms directly.

In their supplemental application there's a part that asks you what faith you belong to.so there you go. I don't know if you not being a SDA or Morman means no interviews.

rejected from Temple 🙁

Does Temple put "denied" on the aadsas website or they just send out a thin letter ? I still haven't heard from them yet, no clue what that means. I wish they can just let me know if they are not going to interview instead of waiting until Dec.

but in order to get the supplemental application do you have to exceed their averages?

thanks.

Darn! they're probably already booked for their alternative-list interviews.

Case is the weirdest school. I received interview calls from some good schools, but Case wants see my fall grades, even though I have a degree and I have completed all prerequisites. I dont know what exactly they looking for in my fall grades. I have a good BCP and Science GPA.

I just want to withdraw my application from there. I think some of the dumbest people in the country are in the admission committee at Case.

i just got my rejection letter from mcdonalds... they were very nice about it but i don't think this is a good sign 🙁

A couple quick notes about Loma Linda:

1) Their secondary causes you to do a lot of extra work, but what is more ridiculous is that they made you go bug your professions and make them jump through their little hoops. Honestly, I respected my professors too much to waste their time with LL's secondary.

2) Second, the reason that the other 5 guys at Loma Linda were Mormons (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or LDS church) is simply because Mormons have always applied to dental school like crazy...in part because they value the family lifestyle it allows. I go to BYU (an LDS school) and as always, we have 200+ applicants this year. BYU often has more dent than med applicants! They also tend to have good stats. For example, I know 5 of the 7 white males at Harvard are LDS guys too. So maybe Loma Linda isn't really discriminating, although hey, who knows, maybe they are.

benfolds23,
Could you elaborate on what the hoops are for the professors? Just for the professor who wrote the LOR for you or everybody?

I'm still waiting for their response and your input would be helpful.

Here's a little run-down of Loma Linda's 2ndary. Its too time-intensive for your professors, in my opinion.

1) The Loma Linda 2ndary has a personal info page. Race, addresses, language, gender, religious affiliation, educational history, work and parent info, and other stuff. A lot of repetitive AADSAS. Interestingly, they also ask that you abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and drug use while at their school(which I think is cool, my university does that here), and then there's the real pain supplement stuff:

2) THREE identical forms, each one front and back, that asks what classes you've taken from the recommender, what relationship and how long they've known you, how your grades reflect your potential, characteristics of you, how supportive you'd be of a christian lifestyle, and additional info. then they rate you compared to other people in intellect, service, integrity, cooperation, maturity, self-motivation, relationships, stability, personality, and English ability. Then they ask their general recommendation and their info.

They have 3 of these forms for 3 of your teachers to fill out.

3) There is a sheet about your observation/work experience verification. They make you get the dr.'s addresses, info, and signatures.

In my opinion, the application is just a pain, but I guess this is a heads up for those of you who want to go through with it.

lol they will have you write an essay at interview too. i got killed at that one last year, the topic was too spritual for me that i dont know how to write. "what is your most spritual moment?"

only one ref. form is for a professor, the other two are to be filled from a spiritual leader and an employer.

ah, and there are 7 essay questions, with 150 word limit that we have to answer too

I withdrew from any school that gave me a headache (e.g. Loma Linda). I asked one professor to mail her letter of recommendation 4 times to one school and 2 times to AADSAS (every time with a tracking number.so I know she mailed her letter 6 times). I couldn't ask her and other evaluators to do more homework for Loma Linda. Plus, I don't want to spend time writing paragraphs/essays for a school that is not my number one choice.

most schools have very similiar secondary questions, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem to write them since you might use them again anways.

I really don't like all those religious questions in the supplemental application for Loma Linda, it's so ridiculous they ask about spiritual moments and stuff. What does that have to do with dentistry. It's also a pain to ask your professor to go through all those questions after they just wrote you a reference letter a couple of months ago (why can't they just use the same ones from AADSAS!!!!!!!!!!!). The recommendation letter for the religious leader is just crazy, I haven't gone to church for 4 years.

In the end, I knew I had to withdraw because I know I wouldn't be happy at a religious school for 4 years. I wish I knew that Loma Linda was a religious school before I applied!!!!!!

Rejection letter over email stating rejection as the header 😡
