When do schools send out rejection letters? I know that it will vary for each school, but I'm curious about the point in the application cycle that rejection letters are sent or. Is it true that no news is good news?

It really does vary by school. There's not one answer to your question. At this stage in the game, for many schools, no news is just no news. There are some schools that have already started interviews, others that don't do interviews and don't release acceptances/rejections until March.

So do rejection letters not come out until interview invites have been sent?

Of course it's true that no news is good news. Once you receive a rejection, you're ball isn't in play. Until you receive one, it is.

I'd recommend looking at past threads for the schools that you applied to to see when people typically hear back. Just search for "[school name] c/o 2020", or 2019, etc. You can also look at the school threads for this year to see if anyone's heard back so far. There's also typically an "Official Rejections" thread for each year, but I don't think it's been started for this year yet.

If someone gets a rejection letter before interviews, it's because they didn't meet some base cutoff in quantifiable terms - so like, a minimum GPA or GRE score of some sort, or maybe just falling way below the average of those that applied. It usually isn't anything more than that if it comes early on. After interviews or whatever amounts to full review and consideration is when they will make decisions based on the whole file (by whatever specific process) and send out letters - acceptance, waitlist, rejection. Of course there are exceptions in all cases, but in general, that's how things go.
