Rejections?

Ok, I'll be brave and post first...

VA-MD, out of state, notified last week via snail mail.

🙁

I applied there out of state a few years back, and I remember getting my rejection letter before Thanksgiving. I'm pretty sure they have hard-set cutoffs and don't read a lot of their out of state applications.

I have to admire their speed. Seriously. If they're not going to accept you anyway, I'd rather know in November rather than March. It hurt less to not wait so long. Wish other schools would be so kind.
The place I'm at now waited until March rejection letters went out to tell me there was a problem with my application, which could have, should have, been resolved long before then. They ended up having to waitlist me because they had to wait until a certain amount of people declined admission. That dragged the process into April because that is how long people had to reply to offers of admission. If I had known about this problem I could have worked it out in time to get a spot in March.
Anyway, my point is that I wish they would let people know earlier. Especially rejections, so they can plan their year.

I totally agree with you. This wait is killing me...

Yup. I'd rather have the rejection now. And of course, if my application is incomplete, please let me know soon!

Last year, one batch of my transcripts wasn't received because, as I discovered, the college didn't use adequate $ of postage! (You'd think if you're paying $10 or upwards for official copies, they could stamp or meter them correctly?)

Most importantly, I want to plan my spring semester, and as much as I'd LOVE to take another course or two, if I had some news earlier than spring registration time, it'd make my life alot more affordable and worthwhile.

Heh... I agree with previous posters in that it's nice to know early.

Last year, Va/Md waited until DECEMBER to tell me that my application was incomplete. And of course they told me this right in the middle of finals week so I had to scramble around getting my supplemental done.

Then they didn't have my GRE scores, so I had to re-send those.

Then they lost my GRE scores a second time around New Years'.

But they sure didn't waste time rejecting me a week after my interview. I never talked to them about my application, but I wouldn't be surprised if "hard to work with" was written on my application somewhere and had an effect on my desirability as a student. Whatever. Their loss 😛

Found out friday, rejected from bristol. Spent two and a half hours crying! But never mind, i would rather know now, than have to wait.

I found out via the UCAS (UK admissions) webste. Just said one word "unsuccessful" it was horrible. But there you go.

Chin up, Katie! I'm assuming you applied elsewhere, like me...we've still got a solid couple of months to be hopeful 😳

yeh, over here we can only apply to a maximum of 4. But that does mean i have 3 left! I'm trying to be optomistic, but it is difficult!

Never mind, good luck to you for the rest of yours, and thanks for the encouragement!

Ugh, now you have me worried. December has rolled around and I've not heard anything about my application past the supplemental. An "Ok, we have everything" like Penn, Massey, etc. sent would be nice... though being out of state, I'm expecting my rejection letter any day now.

Rejected by UPenn. Notified Tuesday (snail mail)

This is such an up-beat thread...class of 2011 is all about the pain

If you are referring to VA/MD, they sent me a "OK we have everything" email a couple of weeks ago, so you might want to email Ms. Massie and make sure your application is complete. I am in-state though so perhaps that is why I got the "everything's ok" email? Hope this helps!

when i get nervous/stressed i eat chocolate. my pants feel tighter as the weeks pass. if i dont hear soon, i swear they'll have to roll me to my mailbox. VETSCHOOLS ARE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH!

This thread makes me sad. 🙁 I guess it's more motivation to do well on my finals next week.

Have you "progressed" to semi-sweet baker's chocolate yet?

Don't talk to me until then. 😛

(Before anyone says ANYTHING, don't knock it till ya try it!)

I know I've been kidding about nail biting. I gave up nail biting years ago (thank goodness, such a bad habit to have!) but I am now consuming alot of chocolate.

I anticipate eating alot more of it by the time winter's over, too!

I have yet to receive one of those sweet invites to interview anywhere, and, there are folks on here that have, to the schools I'm applying to, and, several are out-of-staters like me.

Pass the chocolate!

Heh, yeah, the waiting hurts. Literally. And I think I might pass the hurt along to my mailman if he doesn't bring me some news ASAP! 😛

lol...unfortunately you are "locked in" to w/e the GPA was when you applied. No school that I know of re-evaluates you after you send your transcripts. They just care if you get w/e the minimium is....usually that's a C or better in pre-reqs and also you can't get a D or F in any course work.

I always thought that was kind of dumb, especially if you get waitlisted. If you're waitlisted, you might have a whole year of new grades, which providing you did well in them, could really drive up the GPA. Additionally, I know a ton of early acceptance people that strive to get no better than a C after they get accepted. Unless the class is particularly painful in some way, I sort of view this as the lazy schmuck crowd.

Oh and also though, if you do get lower than a C in a pre-req....schools WILL revoke your acceptance w/o blinking twice.

Anyway, good luck all.

Damn...I havent even applied yet, and I'm eatin chocolate like the're no tomorrow, thanks to my orgo final.
You think semi sweet baker's chocolate is bad? Try spoonfulls of dry nesquick chocolate milk mix. Wannabe vet = masochists :scared:

Dry Nesquik chocolate mix? Dude! Without milk? Isn't that... yuck?

I'm a dry hot chocolate eater...hehehe

Sydney....found out about 45 mins ago...luckily i'm drunk/tipsy, otherwise i'd never post something like this for people to see! I knew it was inevitable, but had my hopes up....man i want to go to vet school. I have a long way to go i feel...

It sounds like you all need a little pick-me-up so I thought I'd share my story. I applied to three US schools last year. Got flat out rejected from 2 and waitlisted (I was #138 which really made me depressed) at the other. I hung on to the hope that the school that waitlisted me would somehow, by some miracle, invite me to begin classes until the last week in August. I waited in agony from October to the end of August. It was dreadful!! However, I had also applied to Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia and somehow managed to get in. I will be starting in July (I deferred for a year). I had a 3.2 GPA with a C in Biology 202 and a C-, C, and A in the first semester of General Chem. (yes, you see it correctly, I took it three times over a span of five years but I finally got an A). I really suck at general chem. I also have tons of experience in research, large animal, small animal, and chiropractic vet. med. I hope this helps prove to you all that you can get in to vet school without stellar grades and what not. If you have the dedication and proper motivation, you will get in. In the mean time, try to divert your attention to a hobby (it could be anything), because stressing over the waiting game is soooo not worth it. Trust me!

Good luck to you all and keep us posted on your status.

A friend of mine received a rejection from TAMU last week via snail mail...I guess the rest of us should hear by Dec. 22, and so far, no news is good news!

Some schools do request fall transcripts (typically from in-state applicants). I know Auburn is one (they request Fall trans from AL and KY residents).

(I think I've developed an ulcer)... lol

Rejected, Mississippi State today 🙁

At least they didn't tell me 3 days before x-mas😳

That's OK. It's good to bulk up now for the lean years ahead -- once you get to hospital duty you won't have time to eat🙂

OSU....now I'm 2 for 2. If this were baseball I'd be batting 1.000 and making millions 🙁

Hang in there, Alana!!

What other schools are you waiting on?

Waiting on UF, Iowa, Kansas (not looking good) and OK. I know I won't get into FL this year. I visited there this summer and they told me there's almost zero possibilty of me getting in. I don't have as much vet tech experience hours and can't quit my full time professional job to tech for hours, so I'm just doing the Saturday thing. I know some school want to see you've applied a few times to make sure you are serious. I'm 32 and really don't want to get accepted when I'm 40.

Now you have me curious... did they mean you don't have the minimum veterinary experience hours or that you don't have enough hours working as a vet tech? In some states you have to be certified to get that type of job so I would think that's a ridiculous expectation.

They told my my possibilites of getting in this year were slim because of the number of vet tech hours I would have at the time of application. They were very friendly and told me to go ahead and apply for this year, but I would not be competitive. At least they were honest and upfront 🙂

Officially - Illinois on 12/16.

I hope you get some great news from at least one of your schools. I'm not that much younger than you are, so I know the feeling of anxiously wanting to get there and "get in".

Keep your hopes up and your patience!

I've been told that many applicants get in on their second tries. I hope it's first in your case, and second in mine 😉 I was rejected by all four of the schools I tried last year.

:luck:

Hey Alana...I was rejected from OSU as well...jerks! I'm gonna call them and do my "I'm a loser tell me what's wrong with me meeting"...looking forward to that one! I'm thinking about applying to the OSU Masters of Veterinary Public Health b/c that's what I want to eventually do anyway. Hopefully they're not gonna just tell me I have no chance either way! Good luck to you!

Official letter of rejection received today from Illinois!

The letter states: "The averages found below are for those applicants who made it past this first phase:

Cumulative Grade Point Average 3.62
Science Grade Point Average 3.52
GRE (general) Composite Score 63%

The letter also says they will offer appointments for individual sessions on application feedback beginning March 5, 2007, either in person or by phone.

Just thought I'd let ya'll know.

🙁

I'm so sorry.....

what does 63% translate to?

CookieBear I'm angry on your behalf - you deserved to get in! poopyheads.

what does 63% translate to?

Probably percentile for all students that took it this year. I wonder how they recalculate it now that it's computerized and people are basically taking it all the time.

Because a lot of people take the GRE the percentiles are a little cranked up. Like if math/engineering people take it, they always (or pretty much have to) ace the math protion. I think remember that you stop being in the 90th percentile pretty fast according to the chart in my Princeton review book. I remember thinking it was sort of odd that the good scores for vet students are relatively low percentile-wise with everyone else taking the exam.

I still think it's a goofy test for us to be taking anyway...the test was a better measure of my ability to drive to the testing center than it was of anything else.

Haha, I totally agree! Although that doesn't bode well for me, considering I got lost on the way there, and the testing center proctor hung up on me when I called for directions!

CookieBear, I'm sorry about Illinois =(

Did you go to the one near Six Forks? I had a horrible time finding it. I think I actually found it by accident.

Yes It frustrates me too about the GRE. They care just as much about a 4hour test as they do a 4 year (sometimes plus) GPA. Doesn't make sense to me. Just a way for more $ to be made.

I did well on the math (610) but my verbal stinks. Who cares if I know what cacophony means....like that'll help me better communicate with a client?

I got 3 more rejections....I mean schools to hear from.

Don't be so down. I'm sure you will hear good news from one of your three schools. There is still time. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Acutally, I'm not that down and haven't shed a tear about not getting an interview yet. Things will work out, just probably next year 🙂

If I don't think i'll get in, then I'll be even more excited when I (finally) do!

Happy holidays everybody!!

I actually know that one. How smart I feel. <<imagines the sound of a mule braying>>

I had to weigh in on GRE scores too. I much agree that too much consideration is placed on them (as we know it is not the tell all/ends all of academic ability). I mean seriously, I play the piano but I can't juggle or play the cello (I have even tried). Just because some one is good at one thing does not make them good at something else. I know superior minded people that have whipped the GRE, but do not have the effort, care, skill, athletic ability, or love for doing farm animal work (herd checks, ect). Many of these people will impress admissions at a vet school with their academic talent and lie about how they will do large/farm animal work, when their true intentions are to work in a small animal clinic and take advantage of hard working middle-class Americans (by trying to live the lifestyle of some MDs). The poor farmers and lower class large animal owners really get hurt by this process and it is a true shame for them when someone who does not want to do a herd check gets called out and charges them a huge fee for spite. I am not saying that the GREs are bogus, but lets face it, there is more to becoming a quality veterinarian than trick math problems. Yes I am not smart enough to do well on the GRE, but I do have a 3.5 GPA, a masters degree, and a HUGE number of YEARS of working experience and animal interaction, and I know that I could help many more people than some veterinarians that are doing it now. I don't care about money, I'm poor now and I have no problem staying that way. I just want to help people with their farm animals and make them happy...I'll save my glory for God and not cash. Those of you out there that come from farms understand our way of life and love for our animals. If they let you in vet school don't forget to keep your heart in it. Don't be brain-washed into thinking you deserve an MD lifestyle and clients that understand biomedical research (they are just good hard working folks). Be conservative and work hard for your money, don't expect someone to hand it to you, and if nothing else....do it for the animals! Good luck for all of you. :luck:

I pretty much agree entirely...on many notes

I've known several people that well enough lie about their intentions.

I have a lot else to say but I'm avoiding it at this point.

Thank you for the warm sentiments, everyone. Receiving the rejection letter in the mail didn't phase me. I cried it all out when I saw the "Interview not offered" status online a couple weeks ago.

Regarding percentiles: Last year, Penn advised me that I would not be competitive unless I had 70% tile or above on each of the sections, verbal and math respectively. I'm way above on verbal, and not hitting that on math.

Regarding Illinois: I can only hope my other strengths will shine through on my applications elsewhere, aside from my humble GPA and GRE.

With 11 more schools still pending for me, and the upcoming interview at Kansas (whoo hoo!) I'm going to keep a positive outlook!
