So I've had my app out for a while and I've gotten a number of great invites back, but I've yet to hear from a bunch of programs. Friends of mine going into rads and peds have actually received rejection letters. Does anyone know if categorical general surgery programs send out rejection letters like that or will they just leave me hanging on the off chance that a spot opens up due to a cancellation? Thanks in advance

Probably depends on the program. My residency and fellowship didn't send out any rejection letters, but others may (I know,*real* helpful answer).

I'm still waiting to hear from some surgical programs I applied to way back in the day!

You've basically been rejected by the places that don't offer you interviews...that's how I took it.

On that note...
if a program has sent out invites (as per Dr. Cox's totally awesome sticky)
and we (or I ) have not received one yet, is it kosher to contact a program and see our chances?

from talking to friends who have done so what does the application is still "out for review" code for ?

Yes. It is fine to call ONCE or to have a member of your faculty call for you, express your interest in program X and see if they will rereview your application for an interview.

It could mean anything from the "committee hasn't met yet" to "we might interview you if we don't get anyone more interesting".
