Hey have any of you been convicted of a crime other than a minor traffic offense...like underage drinking? If so, what have you reported on applications that request information about past convictions? Anyone have any advice about this...or has anyone been interviewed that reported a past conviction?

I cannot answer any of those questions but the GW dean of admissions told us that they found out that a student had been convicted of something (the student did not report it) and was subsequently kicked out of med school immediately!


If you were convicted for something I would report it, especially if it shows up on your record!

The only stuff you dont have to report are driving violations (not including drinking and driving)....like speeding tickets, auto accidents (where you were not under the influence, etc....), and other stuff like that.

My school took our fingerprints and did a background check on us during orientation. As I understand it, if you have a felony conviction you can't recieve a medical liscense anyway.

The consequences of being truthful (having something to talk about during your interview... admitting the mistake and learning from it... etc etc) are far less than the consequences of being dishonest and being caught.

I would definetly report everythign the school asks you to. On most of my secondaries, there were questions about legal incidents. Some were different than others, but just answer every question with complete honesty.

I would look into getting the crime expunged from your record. From my understanding you don't have to report it in your application; however, you will have to report it for licensure.

where do you attend school, that seems extreme, I have heard of these instances but I was under the impression it was before clinicals , wow!

I have two M.I.P.'s and reported them both. I tried to get them expunged before I submitted my application (they have been expunged now), but I opted to just go ahead and submit early rather than late. I have been interviewed at 7 of the eight Texas schools I applied to, so I don't think it's that big of a deal. If it was, I doubt they would have invited me to interview. I was asked about it by interviewers at only one school: the med student asked if I learned my lesson and the M.D. laughed and told me about stupid things his daughter had done and that he understood. At another school, a lady from the admissions office told me that it was "small fries." Basically, i think it is just important to be honest, and if they ask let them know that you realize you have made mistakes and that you are past all of that now.

I'm acronym-deficient-- what's an MIP?? I think it's something "In Public," but can't think of what the "M" stands for.

I think if your past offenses are misdemeanors then schools really won't penalize you for them (unless all those nights of public drunkeness end up in a less-than-stellar GPA). The big line you don't want to cross is a felony.
