I was wondering when students typically get involved in research during their 3rd/4th years? I know that faculty encourage research involvement but I just don't know when you have time to do so especially during 3rd year

Most people do research during MS1-2 years and MS4 years.

If you have a 3rd year where you do all the core rotations and no electives (as I think most schools do), then no, you aren't going to have a lot of time to do research. I mean when you are working overnight in the wards every 3rd or 4th night, and studying for a shelf during your "spare" time, there's just no way. Perhaps you could devote a handful of hours a week during family medicine, psych, or outpatient medicine, but otherwise just forget about it during this year. In 4th year during electives some people take a research month. And when taking light electives you certainly can squeeze in a few hours a week to research. A few people each year, particularly those gunning for the most competitive fields, take a research year off after 3rd year (although a year after second year is more common).
