Hello!
I'm a 3rd year medical student and I'm looking for a topic to do research in plastic surgery. I've come up with a few topics but i don't feel confident with them. Please drop the suggestions below if you have any.

Ummm no. The main point of doing research is figuring things out for yourself.

Isn't this more something you would discuss with your school mentors and professors since they'd have a better idea of who you are and what resources you have available to do research with?

If anybody here had a really great idea they probably wouldn't want to just give it away on the internet.

Epidemiology idea: Figure out how much younger/richer subsequent spouses are than the spouse present at the time of plastic surgery.

Yes, you're right. I'm already doing that but any kind of suggestion is appreciated.

All jokes aside, I’d really like to see some cool studies assessing the relationship between plastic surgery and psychiatric conditions/outcomes. I feel like the behavioral/cognitive aspect of changing your appearance is understudied.

Thanks a bundle!

I'm not interested in plastics and I have no interest in conducting this type of research so here are some ideas (not all surgical related, though):
  • Spray on skin for burn victims
  • Vitiligo
  • Pregnancy-induced melasma
  • Wrinkles
  • Face lifts vs chemical peels
  • Psych issues and cosmetic surgery - this can go in so many different ways (@Peach Newport - great minds!!!)
  • Insurance payments and plastic surgery - who's willing to pay for what and in which region of the country
That's all I can think of for now.

Most of that is dermatology, not plastics

Thanks. Involving dermatology with plastics is a really cool idea.

Something is better than nothing.

Unless you’re going for plastics. What plastics attending will want to do work on melasma or vitiligo? They’ll tell you to take a hike

Here's a good PICO for you:

Among adult entertainers, is spending more on plastic and reconstructive surgery associated with greater total career earnings?

So much room for subgroup analysis here too: Is it total cost of procedures or number of procedures? Does the genre matter? Is there a difference between strippers and porn stars? Does it hold true for both genders? Do certain procedures yield higher rates of return? Are there any interesting trends developing over time as surgical techniques change? Does age at the time of procedure matter? Does duration of career pre-operation matter? Does hair color matter? Does race matter? I could keep coming (pun intended) up with more but i don't want to be here all day.

Let alone AOA and your #1 plastics residency choice, I smell a K99/R00 and first application R01 coming out of this!

I'd like to invite you to check out this webpage:

www.PRSresident.net

It is a great resource containing:
-Compilation of program reviews from multiple sources including online forums
-Interview tracking
-Interview swap forum
-Sharing places to stay during the trail
-Space for posting the match results.
-Resources for residents in early stages (work in progress)

I'm sure this will be very helpful to future applicants!
