If you choose a residency like radiology, radiation oncology, etc. that require 1yr of transition or IM first, do you apply to both a 1 yr internship program and the specialty program that starts in year 2 at the same time so that you know where you are going for year 1 and 2?

Also, what are the chances that these programs will be in the same city or state?

One more question, let's say you want to stay in the same area as your med school, is this pretty impossible to get both programs at your med school? Mine offers just about everything I would want to pursue. If location is more important than type of residency, do students ever apply to different types of residency programs all in the same location vs. applying to the same type in various locations? Some people may not be able to relocate due to family issues. Just curious how this all works. Thanks!

Yes, both at the same time.

That depends on what's available in the city/state in question. You can apply to ANY prelim IM/Surg or Transitional year that you want to. It doesn't have to be with the same program.

Not really - most schools show a preference for their own students but it's not a sure thing. Many students stay at their school for residency. Most do not apply to more than one type of residency, but you could if you wanted to.
