I'm heading to Tripler for residency this summer so I'm trying to figure out what my budget should be roughly. So I was wondering if someone could see if I broke down residents pay at Tripler correctly.

This is what I'm assuming you'd get paid monthly.

O3 - $3,771
BAH - $2,274
BAS - $ 240
VSP - $1,200
COLA - $719

In addition only the BAH and BAS is nontaxable, the rest is taxed.

Am I missing something here?

You're going to want to take that VSP number and divide it by twelve. That's $1200 a year, $100 a month as an intern.

You've covered all of the categories. I'll just have to assume that your numbers for BAH and COLA are correct for location and number of dependents. Also, COLA is distributed monthly, but it's based on a daily rate. You'll get less COLA in February than in March.

Yes, BAH and BAS are not taxed.

90K to be an intern in paradise - you'll be making more than some staff Pediatricians in America. Enjoy.

I'm prior service so the O3 pay isn't completely correct. my PEBD is 97 and my current LES for the HPSP stipend states that I have 14 years of service for pay purposes.

So If I am eligible for the O3 pay with 14 I'm going to assume that my numbers based off of that are correct the only thing that O3 w/14 would affect is my base pay correct?

So is VSP based on years of service so I'd get VSP equal to 14 years of service during internship or is internship a flat 1,200 and then during PGY-2 I'd start collecting VSP based on years of service?

Sounds right. I have no idea how many of the 14 years will transfer. Maybe all of them; I just don't know.

Nope. The monthly medical special pays (VSP, BCSP) are based on medical corps time. You could have spent 20 years in the infantry, but you'll still get $100 VSP a month as an intern. That'll get bumped to $416.66 a month beginning PGY-2 through your sixth year in uniform as a physician. BCSP you don't get - obviously - until you're board-certified, but it follows the same rules as VSP.

Ahhhhh young one......Medical Special Pays are based on the time you graduated from medical school (This is your Medical Pay Entry Base Date) not total years of service. As an intern, you will only get $100 per month.

Will Personnel screw it up? Maybe, but not likely. If they do and someone figures it out (someone will), you have to pay it all back.
