If you get a C in organic chemistry I at a community college, would you retake the class or not ?

I am applying to pharmacy school soon and I am afraid that this C will prevent me from getting accepted anywhere. I was thinking about retaking that class, since it is a 5 credits course at my school.
Since I am applying to pharmacy school this summer, the C will show in my transcript and I can only retake the class next fall because my school doesn't offer Organic I this spring, they only offer organic II.

You better repeat it.
But before you do, make sure that it won't be in vain, since some schools penalize you for repeats.

Because my school doesn't offer Organic I this spring, can I take Organic II this spring, then repeat Organic I during the fall ?

Or I should just wait until next fall to take Organic I , then take Organic II the following spring ? meaning spring 2005.

It may be a moot point. Some community colleges (mine included) will not allow you to repeat any class in which you received a C or better. I would check with them first while making your decision.

Also, if you received a C, do you feel prepared to take OChem II and get an acceptable grade?

My community college doesn 't have this policy .. it is perfectly fine to repeat a class in which one got a C in it.

Now the question is : should I take Organic II now since it is the only organic class offered this spring, then repeat organic I the following fall?

Or just take another class, and wait for fall 2004 to repeat Organic I , then take Organic II spring 2005.

I am so confused .... I don't know what to do.

I am also only a prepharm, but I would say it would depend on how you feel you grasp the subject. I don't believe one C out of 12-15 classes will knock you out of the running. If you think you mostly understood it, my opinion, which you know what they say about opinions, would be to take OChem II in the spring. But if you were unclear of the subject matter and feel that you may end up with another C in OChem II, you may want to wait and take them in sequence. There. My 1 cent worth. (Perhaps not worth 2 cents). Good luck in your decisions.

Thanks Jemc2000, I wish that was my only C.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have 4 Cs from 22 years ago that are going to be averaged into what I am doing now. 🙁

Take orgo II this spring and then repeat part I in the fall.
Orgo II is mostly reaction mechanisms and syntheses, but make sure that you review orgo I during the holidays (especially hybridizations) and figure out what went wrong with part I.

Work hard on Orgo II so that you won't have to repeat that one too.
good luck!

I think that I am going to retake organic I next fall and not take Orgo II this spring. If I do take Orgo II and don't do well, my GPA is going to go down, I am talking about less than a 3.0 , and I will automatically be rejected by all the pharmacy schools in the nation, considering the fact I am applying this summer.

What I am going to do is take : BioII, statisics or calculus I, Literature and religion this spring to bring my GPA up, then apply this summer. Even by doing this, I might not get accepted in any schools because ADCOMS won't see my Organic I and II grades on my transcript. However, it is either that or a terribly low GPA.

Do you guys think that it is a good idea?

Some schools look at your math/science GPA so taking literature and religion to boost up your GPA could have no effect at all. If you need those courses to graduate, then take them. Otherwise, just save your time and money. Literature courses can be time intensive.

I found Organic II to be a lot more difficult than Organic I. I recommend that you repeat Org I before attempting II.

Now you guys have me worried. I too, got a C in Organic chem 1 at a community college. I thought I would be ok since it was my only C in a math or science but now I am concerned it will affect my getting into pharmacy school. Do you guys really think that C will hurt my chances of getting into pharmacy school even though the rest of my math/science courses have been A's and B's? How about a C in Bio 2 at university? is that bad?

Sinderella if you only have one C, don't worry about it....
your case is 100 times better than mine. My case is so bad that I have a back up plan already.

I think if you can do well in Orgo II, as in getting a B or better, there will be no harm done. In my case, I got 4 C's (a C in each Orgo I & II, C in Genetics & C in Human Physio).

I was still able to get into UOP pretty early in the game!

Thanks you all for your advice, I won't be taking Orgo I over again, I will work harder in orgo II. Over this break I will do one hour of Orgo I everyday. I have a hard time with organic synthesis, that is why I didn't do well in organic I.

don't worry. Im in UOP and I got all C's in org chem too!~

I dreamt about my professor, I was talking to him about my grades, he told me that I passed my class. I was happy thinking that I passed the class with a B or A.. but the individual ended up telling me that I got a C instead !!
I started crying my eyes out, started thinking that he gave me that grade on the top of his head. Damn professors !!! , why the hell do they always think that students will be statisfy with a C ?
