I have a question about science courses. I took quite a bit of undergraduate science work at my local community college before I decided to go pre-med. I am wondering if med schools look down on courses taken at the CC level and whether I should retake them at the university level. Some examples are Chem 1 & 2, Cell Molec BIO and a few others. Any advise? I don't want to finish my pre-med with a 3.7+ just to find out my classes arn't viewed in a positive light. 😕

As long as you made A's & B's at the community college and you do well on the MCAT, it doesn't matter.

I don't think it matters. Since I was a volunteer EMT in my town I was able to take classes free at my CC, so during hte summer I did Physics I and II there while getting a B+ in both and the adcom never even brought it up.

Agree with previous posters. Retake the courses only if you did poorly or if you score low on the MCAT. If that happens, the adcoms might interpret your score as an indication that your courses offered insufficient depth. If you score well, the CC courses should be a non-issue.

A bit of my story might help to alleviate your concerns. I completed 37 hours of 41 hours science pre-reqs at a CC. Those last four hours were for Biochem, not offered at the CC. It cost more to take that one four hour course with lab at a 4yr univ. that it cost for me to enroll in 16 hours AND BUY BOOKS! the previous semester. The decision was completely based on economics for me. Univ. tuition is ridiculous. I figured, I'm paying state and local taxes to support the CC, I might as well use it and enjoy the tuition savings. It worked out great for me. I was accepted at CCOM on
12/17 and just returned from an interview today at my state MD school.

Good luck! :luck: :luck:

I agree with the general response you've gotten so far. I took the vast majority of my science classes at a CC after I decided to go premed. With good MCAT scores the fact that my science education came from a CC was a complete nonissue. I was accepted at my top two choices for school and am now half way through year one at UNECOM. Just know the material for the MCAT and you'll do fine. Good luck.

I did all my pre-med course work at my community college. I found this to be a much cheaper and better way to go. The only question I was asked at an interview in regards to my CC course work was why I spent so many years at a community college and how it has prepared me to be an osteopathic physician. I don't think it is ever a problem.

Just my $0.02: I think the quality of teaching at a CC is much better than at a University.
