I got a C- in Intro Genetics at UW and retaking it at another institution - PSU. However, the genetics class at UW has 5 credits and the one I'm taking has 4. Does it still count and replace the old grade?
btw, the two classes are equivalent.

That would be a negative. The class that you are retaking must have the same or more credits than the class you want to replace.

oh shoot. I'm retaking it right now and doing so well. But they cover the same materials though. Should I ask the department for a signature saying that they're equivalent and possible to replace?

I don't think that will really work, its the guidelines set by AACOMAS. You can try but I doubt it works.

Where can I find this guideline on AACOMAS???

Now that I don't know...BUT you can always email them and ask then about it.

Have a wonderful evening!

Well, last year's AACOMAS instructions are here:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=11448&d=1227778889

However, they don't mention the part about the retake needing to be greater than or equal to the number of credit hours as the original course. I think this piece of intel was gleaned after many of us called/emailed with this question. Maybe they will change the rule for this year or you can get them to allow it. Either way, let us know what they say! :luck:

I just called them again and here's the news:

Doesn't matter if the class is 1 less or more credit, as long as they are equivalent. The AACOMAS only replaces the TERM GRADE when u r retaking a specific class.

So Bryce, don't worry too much, my friend!

I stand corrected.😀

Can you give an example, as I'm 😕
So here's the thing. I took genetics at UW for 5 credits, got a bad grade and I'm taking another genetics class at PSU, but only for 4 credits. I believe I'm getting A in that class. I know that these 2 classes are equivalent. The AACOMAS will replace my A for the bad grade even though i'm replacing a 5 credits class with a 4 credits class.

I think they r being very understanding 'cause not all Universities offer the same credit for the same course, as in my situation.

Glad to hear it, and thanks for clearing this up! 👍👍

no prob. n thank you for ur great advice in other threads. I find lots of urs very helpful.

I am wondering if I can retake a course after my degree is complete and have that affect the osteopathic admissions gpa? I am above the 3 point mark in science and cum gpa in chem engineering and just want to retake this class because my gpa would bump up a decent amount for osteopathic schools.

Also, are MS degrees averaged into the GPA or looked at separately? I would almost prefer them averaged in. Are other post-bacc courses averaged in or looked at separately? Is post-bacc/masters work looked at the same in osteopathic and allopathic application processes?

My GPA is 3.17 and I'm just retaking 2 classes (post-bacc) to show that I'm capable of dealing with these kinds of materials (genetics & biochem) and to raise my GPA up so that I could become more competitive.
1. MS degree is completely different from ur Bachelor degree GPA. They only take into account seeing that u r doing well with higher level materials.
2. For DO schools, all of ur retakes can be used to replace ur old grades. If u got a D in Ochem, retake it and get an A, they will only take the A when calculate for ur cGPA. ~ which is very nice. However, Allo schools average ur retakes and old grades - A+D/2.

Would going from a C to a B- make a difference? 🙁

thanks you just answered my question too i was so worried! i'm in the same boat; just wondering so will the new grade automatically replace the old one on AACOMAS and re-calculate your gpa before being sent to all the schools or how does that work?
