Hi everyone!

Can you please help me? I am asking this question in relation to postback programs? Is it worth retaking 2 classes to raise my gpa from 2.85 to 3.1?
Thank you for your response! 🙂

If 2 classes raise the GPA from 2.8 to 3.1 then yes definitely.

Remember though that MD schools average the 2 grades while DO schools just take the most recent.

I don't see how this could cause such a difference on the MD side of things - must be a DO calculation (taking the most recent score in a given class).

2.81 * 125 hours (guess) = 351.25
add 2 classes of 4 hours apiece @ 4.0 = 383.25
Divide by new # of hours (125+8) = 2.88

Replacing 2 F's
2.81 * 125 hours = 351.25
Minus 2 classes of F (no GPA points - just hours)
Add new classes = 383.25
Divide by orig # of hours = 3.066

AMCAS takes GPA's to 2 decimal places, right?

ROMO, If you failed or got Ds in 2 classes then I would recommend that you take them again, especially if they are science related.

Thanks everyone!

I'm just trying to raise my gpa so I can apply to postback progams. That is why I was wondering if I am a competitive applicant in all other areas doest it make a huge difference if my gpa is 2.85 or 3.1? The classes are science based and they are electives for my B.S. Ever since I cleaned up my act, I have 4.0 in my classes and retaking these two would bring up my overall gpa to 3.1, but I am not sure if it is worth my time because right now I have two great research opportunities.

All the best to everyone! 🙂

If you can raise it to a 3.0 (realistically if you can do well in them and not banking on two A's if you know that it may be a longshot) I say do it. Many programs have a 3.0 cutoff and it may open up more doors for you when it comes time to apply. However, ONLY take those two classes if you are fairly certain you can pull off good grades to pull it over a 3.0. Good luck!!

I also have some concerns. I do not know which option would be beneficial for me. My goal is to get into DO school. My grades are very mediocre (3.2~3.3 overall/3.0 science). I've always wanted to become an internal medicine doctor (primary care), so DO is actually a good route for me. Plus, my brother is DO. I can always work at his office (yeah, at least I don't have to worry about finding a job once I get my degree).

I dunno which action I need to take for this fall. I'm very confused. Should I retake the courses I got C's in undergraduate? It has been two years since I graduated college. I heard AACOMAS computate the recent grade only when the course is repeated. In case I retake those courses I received C's, my sci gpa would shoot up pretty fast. But I'm not sure if that is good thing to do.
Or should I go for DO SMPs such as PCOM or LECOM postbacc? Any opinions? Any Pre-Osteopathic students?

If you retook the classes with the C's, it is true that the osteo schools will replace them with the new (hopefully higher🙂 ) grades. Do you have a letter of rec from your pre-health committee at your undergrad, or can you get one? Do you have the necessary letters (or can you get them) from your previous science professors? If you think that you can, than just retake the bad grades at an affordable, nearby state school (not community college). If you think that the letters are a concern, I would consider the DO SMPs you mentioned. I think some of them have linkage agreements to the DO schools.
