Retaking courses

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is generally better to retake the classes in the same institution. They may have grade forgiveness or grade replacements policy. You better look more into it.

I think it will credit regardless because it will just take the average of the two grades. You don't have to take the whole sequence as far as I know but it really depends on the rules and regulations of the CC. You just have to talk to the CC's counselor and your university's counselor which would be better.

Good luck!

At least with my school (we're on quarter system), there is absolutely no need to retake all of Chem 118A, B and C if you end up getting a D+ in 118B or 118C. As a matter of opinion, I really don't think that schools will force you to go through passed classes again if you ended up failing the last segment.

The more important question is if the COP you are interested in recognizes grade forgiveness. Most do not as I recall.

Whether they do or not, PharmCAS will take both grades and put it in your calculated GPAs. Still, I think retaking something for a higher grade shows more effort and reflects better on your part than leaving it as a C for a one time take when you list both grades on a prereq sheet. And if you received lower than a C, likely you would have to retake it regardless.

To OP, you should be able to retake just the one part of the sequence, not the whole sequence unless the school you want to take it at has any odd rules about that..

Another thing to consider here is whether the courses are equivalent. I have heard that in some areas, A&P is combined at the state universities while the CCs teach it separated, or visa versa. In that case, since you would have essentially failed half of either sequence (the A in A&P for example or the second half of both), you might have to take the entire sequence. However, if it's just a sequential progression, you should be fine from an academic standpoint just taking the part you had problems with, although the courses will probably articulate a bit differently between CC & Uni, so you may have some self-learning to do. Either way, pour yourself into it to prove you can do it - shoot for the A.

Schools are not obligated to use the PharmCAS GPA and in fact none of the schools I applied to did. They all had their own formulas for how to calculate the GPA they wanted to look at.

Interesting..! To my knowledge, none of the schools I applied to explicitly said whether they considered it or not. But, I got the impression that they look at those prereq sheets first at least and probably value that much more.

how are you guys retaking classes? Is it mainly through community college?
