Have other people run into road blocks during their pre med careers? If so how have you over come them?

I am starting to feel there are other powers trying to prevent me from accomplishing my goal.

Taking a 6 weeks organic chemistry class with only three test. Well the day before the second test I was laid off as from my ARNP position at work. This was an huge emotional blow to me as well as my patients. A midlevel provider can't work without a physican so unfortuantly I can not continue to take care of my patients.

If I thought this wasn't bad, coping with the financial expenses with applying to medical school, failing an organic test I seemed to pull a muscle in my back the day before I was laid off. It has been in a constant spasm. Not seeming to resolve. Pain is horrible and I think I have a pretty good pain tolerance. Now this pain make studing hard.

My final is this friday. I am scheduled for MCAT's on Aug 20th so I must start my severely intest study plan. ( I had did 8 weeks before orgo started) I just had an MRI done and have found a disc extrusion and will going to see a neurosurgeon.

My short term disability will not pay out because I am no longer a full time employee.

I am just wondering how many road blocks can occur in one's path.

I would love to hear how someother people have overcome challenging situations.

the sun will come out tomorrow 🙂

sorry to hear about your troubles but if becoming a doctor were easy, everybody would do it. Now you have some good things to talk about during interviews, the adcom will be impressed with you struggling multiple things at once and still doing well in class and mcat (hopefully). did you talk to your professor about your circumstances, possibly try to get a retest?

If it makes you feel any better, I had one of the WORST track records in completing the pre-req's, now I couldn't be happier that I finally have enough classes done to apply!

I graduated from my undergrad in Nursing as well in 2007. In the Spring of 2008 I returned to school at night starting with Organic I, while working full time during the day. I contracted an infection at work that ended up with me being in the hospital for a bit. Withdrew that semester.

So, I took another year off, returning in the Fall of 2009 to take the same Organic I Class again...and almost made it through the semester. This time, I was one of the lucky few "blessed" with H1N1. If that wasn't enough, I also had to have surgery during finals week resulting in another withdrawal...

Currently, I'm speaking with my post-bacc program to have the semester expunged from my transcript, seeing as I doubt med schools would want to take someone with such a bad track record...I am also finally completing Organic I as a summer class at my local College.

Long story short, no matter how many roadblocks sent your way, don't let it get you down...If this is what you really want, nothing can stop you. Hope to see you at orientation next year🙂

I know it's a cliche but you gotta stay away from the negativity and consider everything positive in your life. If it's meant to happen, one day it will happen. Every additional road block you encounter, is gonna make that acceptance letter that much more sweet.

Hard times, man. I hate to hear that you're having these difficulties. I really hope that everything comes together for you (and others on this thread having difficult times). I've been fortunate that I've been able to work in healthcare and go to school full time. My biggest obstacle is the MCAT, but that is pretty insignificant compared to some of the trials that you all face. Chin up, buddies.

There are other folks who have had "road blocks". Including myself. Family member dying the day before final exams, take home exams stolen (for advanced calculus nonetheless - 12 pages of proofs), felony assault on my children the day before MCATs, mono during MCATs, homeless during first month of medical school with myself, my husband and my children sleeping on floors and all our things in storage, best friends of 20 years committing suicide during medical school. Other people have gone through far worse than I.

Bottom line: you have to keep your eyes on the prize. Do you want this or not? And how hard are you willing to work for it? Are you going to wallow in misery or thank your lucky stars for what you have and the opportunities afforded to you?

How you deal with adversity reveals a lot about a person. What do you want to say about yourself with how you deal with this adversity?

I think the better question is -"has anyone NOT run into any roadblocks." The road is purposely difficult. If it was easy, all the people who tried to half-ass pre-med freshman year would be M1s right now. If you want it bad enough, you'll blow through the roadblocks. I can't even count mine on both hands.

literally 3/4 of my freshman floor was pre-med... 2 of us kept going

I have a poster I made when I was 12 ands its been on my wall ever since (10 years later). It says, "Mental Toughness - Do you have it?"

"Life of man is short, harsh, and lonely" - Hobbes

Better stop worrying about the roadblocks and doing the Talmudic riddles with yourself and just plow through them

Picture this poster...a dude is rowing (skull's, I think it's called) in the middle of a lake in the direction of an island far off in the distance-so far that it is misty and barely noticeable. He has a tired, gritty look on his face. The reflection of the sun on his arms exposes the heavy, sweaty film. The caption reads:

"Perseverance. There is no substitute" -Thomas Edison.

This is a side question, and I'm sorry if I'm derailing your thread...but...I'm taking my mcat july 29th, and applying as soon as i get my results, which would be around the end of august

Is that too late?

I am not waiting for results. My primary has been submitted that way i can hopefully get secondary apps done while waiting for MCAT scores. That is what I was refered to do. Hopefully after my scores post end of Sept. I will be invited for interviews God willing the first of October.

If I waited until scores were posted it would take longer to get verified through AACOMAS and would get invites to interview til probably December.
