ROL driving you up a wall?...me too. Ok, you guys, here's my question: What advantages would you see to going to Brown over say, Hopkins? I'm interested in fellowship training (onc) and an academic career (research). Any comments? I'm mostly interested in what people have to say about Brown and Providence. Please share your "two cent". Thanks.

I didn't look at either program, but have spent time in both Providence and Baltimore. If it were me, my money would be in Providence. Hopkins is in a bad neighborhood, which really scared me when I went to interview for med school. Providence is nice, and it's only about an hour and a half from Cape Cod which is a big bonus when you get that occasional weekend off in the summer. Hope that helps.

I really really liked both programs. I think that overall I liked Brown more but am leaning more towards Hopkins in ranking mostly because of the name making me think that it would be more advantageous in terms of fellowship stuff. Additionally, I am not sure if I will do REI, but Brown does not offer a fellowship in that area. And I liked that Hopkins had a larger service populations. But overall, I thought that I would probably be happier at Brown, and they seem to have a great attitude towards their residency training. Although Hopkins' PD also showed a lot of enthusiasm. But Baltimore does scare me a LOT, too.

Not to shift the focus off of the original post, but does anyone have any opinions of Hopkins vs. NYU or Yale?

I liked Yale's program best, but it depends what you are looking. If you want a city, I think it's hard to beat NYU. It's in a great location in Manhattan and you have the nice mix of Bellevue and Tisch. Plus it has all the fellowships. However, Yale may have a better name overall and Dr. Lockwood is great. As for your prior comments, I'm just not sure that Hopkins' name carries as much weight in the OB world. As for REI, very few have gone into it from Hopkins recently (despite their having a fellowship) and three went into REI from Brown in last year's match alone (despite them not having a fellowship). In addition, Dr. Metheny hinted that they may have an REI fellowship in the near future and I tend to believe him (he also said they'd be increasing the size of the incoming intern class and they did). These four programs are all strong and I think we could do exceedingly well at any of them, it just depends on what you want in terms of lifestyle, city, teaching, etc...

Well, you can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Brown's main REI guy recently left to become a chairman or something somewhere else (details are alluding me right now). So I kind of had the idea that a lot of the residents were able to still get great research done and get into fellowship programs, but I was not really sure if those opportunities for research and connections in REI were still going to be there.

Also, in terms of Hopkins' name, while I agree that Hopkins is not great in every dept, all the faculty that have advised me at my program still think that it is quite highly reputable.

Bottom line, you are absolutely right in saying that all these are great options!

I am not aware of that about Brown's REI. I know details get confused after so many interviews. Are you sure you're not confusing it with BID, where the director of their REI program (Boston IVF) left to become chair at Dartmouth?

just wondering-- how do you decide a name is reputable? based on the PD at your program? I mean US NEWS and World report ranked Hopkins number 1 for best hopsitals for GYN. (among other departments -- but I just look at the GYN one)

2. Mayo
3. Harvard

Dr Mickey- You may be right. I thought that it was Brown, but it kinda all was a blur.

Snowinter- Yeah, I don't really know how to base reputations short of what people who I respect tell me. And I had heard that US News bit, too. I mean, I think that there is a difference between the best hospital and the best training program. But I really did get the sense when I visited that Hopkins provided excellent training with a lot of depth.

Brown's former REI guy is now the chairman at USF....really nice guy and very into resident education and research.
