My problem: I have insomnia and therefore must wake up at the same time 7 days a week. My roommates party on weekends (UCSB student) and it keeps me up. Already, I close doors/windows, turn on a fan, and put in earplugs... but i still can't get to sleep sometimes, mostly b/c of the bass.

Does anyone know of any things I could do to get by this problem, short of moving/sleeping out, staying up with them, and asking them to quiet down. For example, I am thinking of buying sound boards but idk how well that would work. Currently I sleep in my car on weekends... not fun.

Thanks!

Get drunk and pass out.

Take something like Melatonin and stay away from Mtn Dew or Red Bull. Don't get upset, since that won't help. You don't really have to get up early tomorrow, so don't get too uptight. It's something like 9:00pm PST as you write this. I sure hope you're not complaining already.

Your best bet is moving out, since you do have to go to bed at the same time every night.

It is better than having a drop in your grades.

Can you sleep with calming, slow music? I don't have insomnia but that helps me sleep when my roommates are partying.
How close are you to the roommate? Surely they'd understand tuning down the music, or at least the bass, or going somewhere else.
You have any other friends whose place you could crash at on weekends?

Anonymously call the cops on them. It should work.

I used to get so pissed off trying to deal with it. Call the cops to teach them a lesson if they are really being disrespectful. Tell them no bass after midnight.

I actually experienced similar problems during college so I can sympathize with you OP. You should ask your roommates/neighbors politely if they can turn down the music after certain hours. If that doesn't work and they are playing loud music until late at night, you can always ask your resident adviser or dorm authority person if they can help.

EDIT: Are you in the dorms or do you have an apartment?

i remember the joys of living with roommates like this.

Meh, ask them nicely. If they don't stop, put on porn, dubstep, something stupid that they will hate and blare that ****.

Worked wonders for me. Roommate never turned the music loudly again.

He probably introduced your toothbrush to the toilet a few times too.

Actually this is good advice, I've tried this as well and it definitely got some people to peek into my room to see what was going on. Your neighbors will definitely quiet down.

Pessimistic aren't you. In all the places I lived I always had my personal items in my room... Guess it could be different in other places though.

If you're gonna confront your neighbor, take precautions and safeguard your personal possessions. Just in case.

Except that most loud *******s are the ones blaring the dubstep.

Tell them to be quiet, if you continue to have problems then move out or kick him out.

Why are you sleeping in your car on weekends man, you gotta confront your roommate otherwise he's just gonna continue to walk all over you..

If you don't say anything to him then he/she doesn't know that they're doing something wrong. Speak up OP.

If you go to UCSB, you could probably sleep on the beach! 😎

Lol I could see the lifeguard truck just coming by with a microphone in the morning and telling you to wake the [expletive] up, unless SB and SD are completely different worlds.

I have new neighbors that keep having tons of people over.

For the 3rd time this month, there were drunk people in the hallways, constant noise, etc etc., until 4am. Here's what I did:

First time: called cops. Second time: called cops. Third time: called cops.

Last night was the third time, so today I called the landlord and filed a formal complaint. The beauty of it is that there have to be 2 cop visits to force an eviction, so you can see what I'm up to, here.

You've got to be very assertive. The main thing they need to learn is this: do their partying somewhere else.

I actually got into a fight with the last neighbors who were doing the same thing. I was also naked. I punched this one dude when I was naked (he started it). I'm serious, man, no holds barred, naked or not, you've got to put your foot down. Wangs flying all over the place.

😱 What the heckkkk call the cops!!! Don't sleep in your car!!! If it EVER gets to the point that talking to them/calling the cops/using ear plugs doesn't work then MAYBE you can find a friend that doesn't mind you sleeping over their room on the weekends but don't sleep in your car!!!!! :scared:

Isn't there something called ZzzQuil now? It's supposedly a non-habit forming sleep aid.

I think he should talk to his room mates instead of going straight for the sleeping aids. Don't you?

Well you obviously share the same opinion as me if you keep your toothbrush in your bedroom lol.

You are supposed to practice good sleep hygeine before turning to sleep aids.

First line treatment for insomnia is counseling to strategize good sleep habits. Believe it or not, it actually is more effective than sleep aids.

Throw a party right before one of their midterms and see how they like it.

Sooo many passive aggressive folks in this thread. Why in the world would you call the cops on your roommates without talking to them first? How about you start by explaining the situation to your roommates? They are probably just having a good time and don't realize they're bothering you. Please do not listen to the advice of calling the cops. You are an adult and should be able to communicate with your peers in a respective manner without getting the law involved.

Nah cus if you tell them you don't like it and they don't stop and then you call the cops theyll know it was you and make your life suck even more. Run on sentence ftw.

True. It just comes down to how much you like the folks you live with. If they're old mates from High School, talking may be the wiser choice.

Yea, definitely. If these are people that will actually (possibly) listen to you and care about your concerns, then definitely try to talk it out.

Didn't really have this problem OP, my roommates were people I actually really liked and chose to live with, usually I'd be out there partying with them. Few times it did occur, I noticed that I happened to have two things in my pants I like to call balls and actually just went out and asked them to quiet down assertively and they listened.

OP has surpassed the beta level and gone full delta. You never go full delta.

I would bring it up in as non-confrontational of a way as I could before taking further action. Your roommates may be more considerate than you think, and you might be able to work something out.

As a UCSB alum, I can honestly say that I went through the exact same thing. You should probably sack up and talk to your roommates. This stuff tends to repeat itself. Your kindness being taken advantage of.

Its just benadryl with a different name. Future doctors should start learning about pharmaceutical propaganda  (Might save your future patients some money)

It's quirky, but... I like it.
