Finally submitted all of my stuff yesterday. I waited until I got my last LOR because I know RFUCMS has the tendency to misplace things.
Hey guys, just found out I got accepted. I was complete 3/12.
I called in and was told i should receive the acceptance packet in the mail this week.
My application has been under committee review since February 25th, I wonder why I haven't heard anything yet...
I was also wondering if anyone has any input on which SMP is better, Loyola or RF?
I was accepted to the Loyola MAMS program, but it doesn't even guarantee me an interview at Loyola, and calls for a lag year whereas I know about 70% of the class at the RF SMP gets into RF Medical School for the following year

I think Loyola's program is less cut throat and you have a better chance at getting into other medical schools but what I bolded is my personal most important criteria.
I had my application submitted on the 1st of April. Haven't heard anything... How long does it usually take???

I sent my app in on March 31st and haven't heard a thing yet. I am probably going to give them a call on Tuesday if I haven't gotten any confirmation that they've received my materials.
So I was about to send in my acceptance form in but can't really decide what tracks to pick. Could anybody shed some light? Are some more difficult than others? Current BMSers, please step in...
I read in a previous thread that the Health Admin. and Management Track is pretty good...
What were your stats, if you don't mind me asking....
I'm hoping to hear back from admissions pretty soon...hopefully we'll be classmates 🙂
Check your inbox. I talked to a previous BMS student and was told HCAM is the way to go too.

I've researched all the major SMP's and can't make up my mind. I'm from Canada, and have a cGPA of 3.6 and MCAT of 29 and going to retake MCAT by summer. I was going to start medical school @ St. George but just found out about SMP. RF has the advantage of being 1 yr-program with a master degree rather than a certificate. For the sake of other medical schools, is it better to get a certificate from a high ranked school (Columbia/Harvard/John Hopkins) or a master degree from RF? Additionally, I had an impression that a master degree wud be a great assist for residency matching!!! Can anyone comment on that? Since I can not apply for any federal/state funding, the university expense is my number 1 priority.

I would apply now and just mention that you are retaking the exam. If your acceptance in contingent on your new mcat score, than they should hold your app for you until you send them new scores. I don't think you will have a problem as long as you apply now.
That's encouraging, I guess I'll start filling out the app. Also what does the second part of the essay entail...the distance learning? 😕
I have a personal statement currently being written, that encompasses the things they're looking for...so I'm assuming that one essay is good enough instead of two subpar essays?

Hey....I also come from Canada, University of Toronto. but i'm a permanent resident in the states....first off did you make sure you converted your marks using the AMCAS scale...for Canadian students, they give us a 4.0 for any mark over 80 so its a huge advantage.
I would tell you to definitely definitely apply for RFU SMP. SGU and any other options should be your last resort. Your first choice was probably a Canadian medical school but with your GPA and MCAT its close to impossible unless you apply to McMaster. As you probably know the first cut off for all Ontario medical schools to even be considered for an interview was ~ 3.7/32 this year. Many of my classmates this year with >3.8 and 30 MCAT didn't even get interviews at Canadian medical schools.
Getting a residency is already hard enough for Canadian students, going to SGU will seriously hinder your chances. Next time you shadow physicians at a Canadian hospital look at the list of physicians that are from countries besides Canada/US - there are probably none or very few. Even if you don't get a Canadian residency, going to a U.S. medical school is obviously better and closer to home than Grenada.
This SMP gives you a great chance of getting into RFU provided you can prove yourself academically. Also if you are thinking of applying make sure you hurry up because that annoying international transcript service that reviews your transcript takes time.

I believe a few of the certificate tracks involve some online classes. HCAM (healthcare administration and management) is only online. so you should address how you are able to work efficiently on your own outside the classroom so they know you arent going to fail the certificate track lol
Ah icic...dang..guess I need to make a new short essay just focusing on my online class experiences...

screw that, you don't need a full essay on why you can learn outside of the classroom haha. Just add a paragraph at the end of your essay addressing the issue. How much can you say about outside learning anyways. I just added on extra paragraph addressing the issue and that was good enough for me.
Most Canadian medical schools don't consider any marks from grad school. So your marks won't count for anything. But they do put you in another pool with other grad school students. I'm not sure if you get any special treatment. I'm pretty sure that most schools probably don't even know what a SMP is because these programs aren't offered in Canada.
If you mess up in undergrad in Canada there really is no way you can make up for it like in the U.S. The only way you could boast your average is to do a 5th year of school. But even if you do a 5th year...they require that all the courses have prereqs
So to make it short, if you screw up in Canada (i.e. anything lower than 3.8 and 32) say goodbye to your medical school dreams. Your best bet is to try to get into an American medical school work your pants off, do plenty of clinical rotations in Canada and hope you get residency in Canada. Or just do your residency in the U.S. and hope you can pass the medical licensing exams to get back into Canada

Did any of you fill out the "optional scholarship essay"? Does anybody know how/when we're suppose to find out if we get anything?
That's a good question. I wonder when one would find out. I would think that they would tell you that once you've been accepted...
How do they make their decision on who will receive the scholarship...

So i called asking about this and Melissa said we wouldn't hear back til the class is finalized, so they could go thru everybody who wrote the optional essays.
Anyone know if the second round of acceptances have been sent out? I got into a few other SMPs but this is my first choice!
I submitted mine two weeks ago, haven't heard anything... I am sure it will be out in next week or two!!! Wish me luck, RFU is my first and only choice ;-)

I received an acceptance dated April 8, on either the following Monday or Tuesday. I plan on declining so it should open another spot for the rest of you. Good luck to all!
Hey did you get a spot for residence?
I e-mailed RFUMS asking when they would start giving out rooms for next year. They said residence spots would be handed out this month and to e-mail them if you didn't get a spot (applied before the deadline)
Here is the e-mail I received...I applied after the deadline I think. It looks like they would have already contacted you if you got housing, but they will notify you if you get off the waitlist: (I applied April 5)

i applied well before the deadline...never got any news of anything (e-mail or mail)...i'll e-mail them.

Basically undergrad is the do and end of it all in Canada. Unfortunately the only way you can overcome a bad undergrad is to do another one. No other make-ups, plea bargains, etc will be granted. Graduate school will not help, except at the University of Toronto (UofT) where grad applicants are placed in a separate pool. I'm sure you know all this.
In contemplation of pursuing SMP and/or post-bacc programs in the U.S., I emailed a couple of Canadian schools (UofT, Alberta, Calgary, McMaster, Western, UBC) to inquire about their potential evaluation of such programs. While schools like Western responded by flatly saying that they would not look at an SMP as it is only 1-year in length, UofT would evaluate it as a course-based masters and hence those grades would not impact the undergraduate GPA (although you would be placed in the grad pool I'm assuming). UBC and Alberta have no idea as to what they would do as they told me we'd have to have the grades evaluated by external agencies i.e. ICES or WES to determine the transferibility of grades from such programs. I haven't heard back from the rest. So again, there's no salvaging an undergrad screw-up, save for a second undergrad.
I think the above should perhaps be in another thread so sorry about derailing the RFU BMS thread!
I'm seriously considering the BMS program at RFU, mainly because 1) it has some form of linkage to CMS (although they tend to deny this so as not to get hopes up I guess) and 2) RFU is a very Canadian-friendly school.
Ahhh dilemmas and decisions!

For me personally, I chose the student residences because its closer (If you look at the youtube video I posted the school is just right across the parking lot) and I dont have to visit Chicago just to check if the apartment is alright.
Stove, dish washer, fridge ,etc. is included, with water/heating/garbage so I guess that makes life easier with less moving, etc. Also, I read some reviews online that there are some major problems with heating and service at Woodlands.
Personally, I'm here to beast this year and a social life is important but far from my priorities. Studying in groups can be a good change of studying style but I usually study alone. I guess if you rely on studying in groups than maybe Woodlands in da way 2 go.
I assume that most people live at Woodlands becuase most ppl don't apply well ahead of time and getting a later acceptance probably means that student housing is full by the time they receive their acceptance. But who knows these numbers can change depending on the year.

Actually the woodlands is closer to campus believe it or not. But we're talking a 4min walk vs a 6min walk. The dorms are more expensive yet are slightly nicer. The woodlands isn't a dump, and they provide you with all those same amenities described in the previous post, just older models for kitchen appliances. No matter which you chose you'll have the means to "beast" the program.
i would say the dorms are much nicer than the woodlands. i mean i wouldn't call the woodlands a dump but I wouldn't say they are nice either. the dorms are definitely quieter too. Being a girl, I'm pretty picky about where I live though. I have a car and chose to live a couple miles off campus at another apartment complex that is cheaper and nicer. The school's website (under student affairs I think) has a link to off-campus housing pdf and it has a lot of info about nearby apartments.

I applied to the BMS program about 3-4 weeks ago, I called them yesterday and she told me that the decision has been made, and you should receive it in a mail within couple of days. She however, refused to tell me the decision over the phone, does this mean I got rejected???
How come they didn't email me in regard to the decision?
