I was wondering if anyone had any information on Ross university. They place 96% residency and pass the usmle 1 92%. These seem like decent stats, I was just curious if this might be a decent backup plan.

Ross is in the carribean.

That's the place I'd like to go if I have to. Reasonable tuition fee comparing to the luxerious St. George. But they may want you to sign a promissory note of about $96,000 before matriculation. That is for 4 years of tuition fees. Housing is extra but (a lot) less expensive than at St. George.

You can spend 3rd and 4th year clinical sciences in USA. There are two places I know of where you can choose in CA, a hospital in Bakersfield and the well known City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte. I have heard of a few people who have been there at Ross. They like it. Those Caribbean Schools emphasize pre clinical sciences. You'd have a chance to build a strong foundation for your clinical phase. And if you are lucky to have good teachers during the last two years in USA, you know the rest of the story.

There is another school by the name of Grace? It is on sale now, I think. (A break in tuition fee)

Some airline gives a break to medical students going to Caribbean Schools. Don't forget to ask.

Hope that you don't have to go that far. Good luck.

By the way, are you the one who has to take care of three kids? The hardship could backfire if people have a doubt in your ability to manage time for both medical school and your children.

I lost the bookmarks for those Caribbean Schools to a virus, sorry.

Yeah I have three kids, but i'm also married. I was thinking that i would go to school there and my wife could stay here. I don't know, I just want some alternatives. thanks for the info.

Stick to SGU or Ross. SGU has perhaps the better rep, but a good student will end up spending an extra 55k and a lot more time in the carribean.....and for both Ross or SGU grads, board scores outweigh any rep differences. A 230 step 1 from ross will match better than a 215 from SGU, and vice versa. Of course a 200 from any LCME school will be in a much better position thatn both. SGU does tend to have more optho/rads/EM residencies, but that's probably due to the fact that a higher % of matriculants at SGU are capable of scoring 235+ on the USMLE.

If your goal is to get an IM, FP, path, or psych residency somewhere, then graduating and passing step 1 and 2 from either ross or SGU will be enough. If your goal is to get an IM, FP, path, or psych residency at some university hospital, then graduating from Ross or SGU with a pretty decent USMLE score and decent LOR's will probably be enough. If you want to do a surgical specialty then you probably shouldn't go to either school.

There are viable reasons to choose Ross over SGU(cost, time on island). There are viable reasons to choose SGU over Ross(better island, better rep with some PD's). But there are no good reasons to choose AUC over SGU.

hi,

what you said is correct, Ross has pretty good statistics and it is a fairly easy school to gain admission into. i actually applied to the school last year for the january 2003 semester, i got in about two weeks later but deferred the admission because i had always placed ross as a backup, and i hadn't applied domestically yet. i have a lot of close friends that go there and they are really pleased with the curriculum. they obviously say that island life isn't the greatest, but you get used to it. if your serious about it, i don't think its a bad way to go. the good thing about it is that you don't have to swarm yourself with the whole amcas application process and secondary responses, which can get extremely frustrating at times. to be honest with you, one of the biggest reasons why i didn't end up accepting their offer was because of the difficulty IMG's (international medical graduates) have when applying for US residency positions. ross grads typically get a residency here in the states, but it may not be the residency of your choice or field you want to go into. for instance, if you are dead set you want to do orthopaedic surgery, i would not consider ross. there are over 25,000 IMG's applying for roughly 5000 residency spots (5000 is about the left over of spots available after US grads match). the good thing is that ross grads and other caribbean grads have top priority of those 25,000 because schools and hospitals here are aware of ross's reputation. spending only 16 months on the island and then the rest here in the states gives ross students a high priority when it comes to other IMG's that have done their medical training in other countries. you should seriously think about it though. i would recommend reading up on the ross forum. i do not remember the actual website, but if you type in ross medical school forum in google, it should come up. i found a lot of valuable information there. if there is anything else you need to ask please feel free to ask. i hope i have helped a little. take care and best of luck.

As an IMG from Ross, would my chance for the residency I want improve after a few years of training in one of the primary care medicine? Those few extra years of training then may be a better investment than a few extra years for a redecoration of my resume for a U.S. medical school now.

Im currently in my 2nd semester here at Ross. If you have any specific questions you can PM me or post in the international forum. A 3rd year student, SkipIntro, frequents that forum more often as well.

Another good source for any international school talk is at www.valuemd.com

I work in a hospital and know of a couple people who attended Ross. One was an ICU fellow, and the other is in ER I believe. . .
I would go to Ross if I didn't get in.

The fact that you'll be on the island for 16 months will probably FORCE you to focus. And the program is only 3 years anyway, so you'll be an MD in 3 years instead of 4! Not bad. . .

I already got an acceptance from Ross. I would definitely go there if I didn't get love from any of the US med schools. Finishing in 3 years is kickass....

i am definetely considering ross as a backup.

low cost relative to private schools.

only 16 months on the damn island. Then it's back to the US. I can manage that.

They have an affiliate hospital right here in duarte, CA. That's right next door to me! that would be the shiznit if I could learn there. Even better, I can stay home.... free room/board

But I'm kind of worried about the supposed change of ownership to Devry University. I hope this doesn't hurt the quality of Ross.

I remember when Devry started advertising their school on TV during the 90's..... I thought they were pretty crappy in that sense.

As far as medical schools goes, Ross University is complete garbage. Heck, as far as regular schools go it's garbage.

Now forget using that rolling eyes smiley when you and just about everyone knows Ross is no Harvard and is at the bottom of the rung as far as med schools go. It's owned by DeVry for god's sake! Only the very worst and desperate go to schools like Ross.

I'd go to a D.O. school over a carribean med school anyday!

😀

there is good quality and bad quality.

i didn't mention either when I used the term "quality"

Ross sucks, according to many people. But it's everyone's last resort.
They still get hundreds of students into residencies each year. That's better than nothing.

After that, it's all about your hands-on & interpersonal skills.

You're not fukked for life just because you go to an offshore school to study.

Im still astonished by the ignorance of some people, oh well.

Those who dont know Ross will critize it blindly.

Yeah, it was just bought by Devry. So what. Its an infusion of capital hopefully. Till now, all we've been is a $60 million or so surplus to their bottom line on wall street. Its been nothing more than that and for the moment it won't be anymore than that.

The degree won't say Devry. We're being taught by the same people we've always had. The campus is still growning and improving on a yearly basis, which is more than I can say for most schools. Besides who cares if it says Devry? Im not so stuck on apperances.

There are quite a few people who turned DO schools to come here. And others who had lived in a different part of the country would probably not be here. Its a matter of luck and chance.
There is a thin between those who make it and those who don't.
Consider yourself lucky if you went or are going to an american school.

Ross gives some of us the opportunity to do what we want in life because we messed up earlier. Im much happier being here. If I wasn't here Id probably be looking at dentisty or podiatry (neither of which I like). Or working in some job Id loathe(sp?).

Its a place where the faculty will help, but a lot you have to learn by yourself. It gives an enviroment where we can do nothing else but focus on our studies.

Besides you will find youself working along side Ross graduates or SGU graduates, or UAG graduates in the future. Truth of the matter is that if these schools didn't teach us anything and if none us committed ourselves to doing well, none of us would probably get passed the USMLE exam. But our commitment to excelling can be seen in the amount of people who do graduate every year and get residencies in the United States. Those are numbers you can't argue with.

This place is all about opportunity.

It is an opportunity we might never have gotten elsewhere and all of us work hard to get where we want to go.
