In terms of pure revenue generating income, hemepath is a total waste of f-ing time. For each marrow sign out I bill for a morph on the aspirate and core biopsy, reticulin stain, iron stain (so 2x Special Stain grpII) and 1 flow bill that is not broken down by antibody. Soooo
1 Aspirate charge
1 Core biopsy charge
2 Special Stain charges
1 Flow Charge for 15+ antibody interps
-----
5 charges
Time: 30-40 minutes.

Now,
time to read and signout 25 charges of GI 88305s = 40 minutes.

5x the number of charges, and the 88305s bill for MORE!

Do NOT go into hemepath, Im calling the retreat.

RyMQ I know you are a hemepather, what do you think all the scaleback in flow interps?? It has made the field a total P.O.S. graveyard.

And PS- NEVER ever do your bone marrow biopsies, crap, the procedure reimbursement for them vs. the time and risk is complete garbage, FNAs are much better.

Since I've only been in practice for just over a year, I was never making obscene amounts of cash off flow interps. As it is though, it takes me about a minute to sign out a flow, and direct money to me (through my bonuses) is working out to be equivalent to what I get paid to interpret 2 bone marrow aspirates and biopsies.

You are right about hemepath not being a huge direct revenue generator, but it is my niche and it got me a pretty sweet job. Basically, having a hemepath fellowship has put me in a position to share in all that glorious GI polyp revenue.

Before I did my fellowship, I always told people I was going to have a referral practice specializing in hyperplastic polyps. All the jack, none of the risk. If I could only figure out how to get other labs to only send me only their easy cases...

Sounds like I made the right decision then.

Yes, I suck up marrows for the privelege of GI biopsies BUT were those to vanish I would be scrambling harder than a starving Ethiopian who crash landed at a casino buffet in Vegas to get replace that biz or get it back! Just the mere thought of not having it makes me repeatedly click on the MBA application links...
