Rush Interviewees!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They dont list the number to the admissions office. The general number for Rush Medical College is 312-942-6915, and in my experience, if you call and ask for the admissions office, they'll connect you.

Their med school admissions office is number 312-942-6913

Just called...they said "Nothing has been sent" so I doubt I will be getting anything this week....damn. I dunno if that means a decision has been made or not. She said she wouldnt be able to tell me what the decision was anyways.

I hope we find out by next week.

hey all, i'm headed there in less than 2 weeks! any advice? i'm beginning to question how much i know about the school and how prepared i am to face the firing squad of interview questions. egads... and i'm from out of state

I was in the same boat as you. I"m out of state too. Can anyone please tell me WHY Rush accepts so few out of staters for a private school? I mean let's look at the numbers here, one in every eight people live in california. But, are one in every eight med schools in california? NO! Therefore, most of us Californians have to look elsewhere, considering there are only 5 state schools in california, 3 of which are top 15 schools.

It's just ridiculous. =P

They probably take a lot of in-state since they are a part of the greater Chicago community and want to provide well-trained doctors to continue that care for the people in the Chicago area. If you go to the website and read about Rush's history, you will see a past longstanding affiliation with the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois.

Even as a private university, they might also receive a significant amount of funding from the state or through joint grants with the public universities.

I'll bet a lot of private schools accept more people from the state they are located in than out-of-state.

Joonie,
My two interviewers were great, they really just wanted to get to know me better and understand my reasons for wanting to attend Rush. You will have a closed and open file interview. During the closed file, be prepared to talk about yourself a lot and answer the general questions (Ones I got were: Why medicine, What do you do for fun, Tell me about a project where you succeeded/failed?). During the open file, they will ask more specific questions tailored to your app so read over your amcas and Rush secondary again (although my open file interviewer mainly talked about the school). I think there was one interviewer who asked multiple ethics questions but other than that most of the interviewees had a relatively easy time with it. You may want to mention the depth of clinical exposure and community service opportunities that Rush offers. Im out of state too but most of the other interviewees on my day were also. Good Luck!

I can't wait for my Rush Int. Its not until the begining of Feb, but I think I read somewhere rush only int. ~500 compared to the ~ 1000 that the other schools I have interviews go through. Like a couple of other people I'm an out of stater (New Orleans native), but I'm still hopeful.

Motherf@cker.

I just got the rejection letter from Rush. Well, they can kiss my big fat @$$

Woo hoo! Go SLU! Higher ranking and better match list!

Sorry, I'm just bitter.

Good luck to you guys! 🙂

😱 Im really sorry Pewl. Good luck with the rest of your interviews

Some of my friends tell me I'm nuts to be upset about getting into SLU and not getting into Rush. I know SLU is better on paper, but I like Chicago as a city, heh. =P

What is it about the program at SLU that you like more than Rush?

Well, there are much more research opportunities at SLU and the match list is slightly better. They match more people into rad onc (the area that I'm interested in). And, "on paper" SLU is in the US News rankings, at least. Don't get me wrong though, You'll get just as good an education at Rush. Hence, why I kinda wanted to go there. =P

Rush doesnt provide its info to US News but even if it did, I dont know if it would be ranked (maybe for primary care). Doesnt NYMC match really well for radiology? probably more for diag than onc

Rad onc and Radiology are two distinct ball parks. Rad onc is among the elite specialities, up there with orthopedics and such. All of my graduate work has been as a physicist in radiation oncology, but even this won't help me much unless i get some damn good letters and a ridiculously high board score. 🙁

NYMC matches pretty damn well for radiology. 26 matches last year.

NYMC prepares you pretty well for the boards. I was told on interview day that they have higher average board scores than NYU. Perhaps the people at NYMC have a chip on their shoulder to prove themselves. NYMC is considered relatively low tier for some reason, even though they produce excellent board scores.

RUSH REJECTED ME POST INTERVIEW. MY INTERVIEWER SAID I AM "BEHIND" OTHER APPLICANTS BECAUSE I AM ONLY 20 YEARS OLD NOW.

I WANTED TO MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS BUT I GOT ANOTHER ACCEPTANCE FROM MY TOP CHOICE MED SCHOOL.... SO SCREW RUSH... THEY DISCRIMINATE!

How's being young make you behind?? Way I see it, you're seven years ahead of me. Congrats on your top choice.

This was in the middle of a conversation and he never gave me a chance to reply. I was guess I was "behind" in life experiences.

RUSH adcoms: if you are browsing this forums you need to talk to Dr. Daniel Loiterstein, Geriatric Psychiatry.

did he tell you " i will give you my business card only on one condition, you should not send me a thank you note. i dont know why people send those"
he kept biting his fingernails throughout the interview. was he your open or closed file?

Just to give everyone an idea...I interviewed 12/19 and received my acceptance letter today! Extremely impressed by the 2 week turnaround.

I think it helped that I interviewed with the director of admissions (open file) and thus the quick turn-around.

For all you out-of-staters...I'm from out of state so don't give up hope!

Good luck to everyone still waiting.

By the way, I recieved 2 envelopes, 1 thin (letter of acceptance from dean) and a thicker envelope with the deposit info. I actually opened the thick envelope first, so it sort of ruined the surprise. Acceptance letter dated January 3rd.

Just curious, did the "Dean" sign your acceptance letter or did the "Chair"? My waitlist letter had the Chair's (facsimile!) signature.

Yeah, he gave me his business card and told me not to send him a thank you note too. He was my open file interview. Bastards@#$%

It was from the dean himself with a facsimile signature.

Mine was David Klodd, the Chair. The Dean's too busy to put his name on waitlist letters.

Hey Nape:

I've heard Rush can go through its waitlist pretty fast. When I applied 2 years ago, I interviewed in April (obviously for a spot on the waitlist). I had already been accepted to another med school but really wanted to go to Rush (I'm from Chicago originally..long story).

Anyways, they ranked the waitlist to quartiles and we were told that if fell in the highest 25%, there was a good chance that they'll pull you off the waitlist.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. So it'd probably be May-ish before I know my rank, right?

I think it was end of May early June. If I remember correctly, they finish the interview season in April and then rank everyone on the waitlist.

what the f*ck is going on...i interviewed on the goddamn 7th of Dec. and still haven't heard anything.

Rush is starting to piss me off a lot. I expected this from UIC but not rush.

buncha bastards.

Sounds like one (or both!) of the interviewers haven't turned in their report thus preventing your file from being voted on by the committee. Or maybe (conspiracy theory only) the letter got lost in the mail :scared:

I don't think it would hurt to shoot off an email (phone call) to Ms. Porter in Admissions asking if a decision has been made just to make sure it didn't get lost in the mail.

do you remember the names of the people that interviewed you vizsla?

Maybe me and you had the same people and they just haven't submitted their sh1t yet

I had Dr andrews and Dr chubinskaya

Hi all... I will be interviewing at Rush and have already gone through the feedback posts....I was wondering if you guys could give me some more ideas as to the ethical questions they ask and which interviewers are known for asking them...I haven't had an ethical questions on my 4 interviews so far so I am a little freaked out by this.

Murdah,
I had Dr. Rumoro and Dr. March. It could be that either our interview evaluations havent been turned in OR they were turned in after the committee already met for that week to decide on applicants. Since the admissions committee meets every wednesday, Im hoping they will vote on our apps tomm and then we should hear by maybe saturday or monday (or sooner if ure from chicago). good luck.

ABC321,
I didnt have the interviewer who asked the "ethics/general medical questions". I believe there were some interviewers in the past who got questions like "what is cancer? stroke?" or "explain pathology behind diabetes". Even though there is a slim chance that you will actually get the interviewer who asks these types of questions, I would make sure that I have a general understanding of cancer/stroke/AIDS/diabetes....Im sure you have seen these before and know a few things about them. As for ethics, some of the questions I have gotten on interviews were related to abortion, prescription medications being sought outside US, stem cell, euthanasia, HIPAA regulations. Again have a general understanding of what these entail and also know exactly where you stand on these issues...a common follow up to an ethical question is "how do you feel about ____" or the interviewer might create a scenario that relates to the issue and ask how you as a doctor would deal with situation. I think this line of questioning is really just a way for the interviewer to guage how firm you are in your convictions and if you, as a med school applicant, have given these issues any thought. Dont stress about it, be confident in whichever stance you take and you will be fine. Good luck with your interview.

I interviewed on Dec 21(3 weeks ago today) with Dr. March as well, and Sharon Gates, the woman in charge of RCSIP. They were both great! No ethical questions either, which I wouldn't have minded, but it was just so much more casual, trying to get a sense of what I was looking for in a medical school and who I was off paper. Overall, I loved my day there and am eagerly awaiting to find out their decision -I would send them my $56000 tomorrow if I get an acceptance.

Good luck to all those still waiting!

Rush Community Service Initiative Program, or something to that effect. It's the volunteer/comm service organization that hooks you up with sweet gigs.

just called admissions office, they said a decision has been made and letters will go out this friday. (my interview was 12/07)

Hey Vizsla...do you have the phone number for the Rush office...you could PM me if you want. Sort of embarrassing but I sent out my deposit last week to hold my spot using a $0.37 stamp instead of the new $0.39 stamp and just want to confirm that they received my deposit!!!! 😱
