- Medical Student
I am trying to go into EM, FM or IM. with that said, I honestly think I cannot go wrong with either but I was hoping to get input before putting down a deposit in December.
RVU
Pros
Pros
RVU
Pros
- Very rigorous curriculum that prepares you for the USMLE (which is also a requirement).
- Close to home.
- Non-mandatory attendance
- New campus. Everything seems so "cutting edge" and brand new.
- Innovations in medical education. For example, they pair US sessions with dissection labs to better understand anatomical structures. As an EM or FM/IM physician, my goal is to use an US at bedside as part of a physical assessment so having early exposure on how to use one is nice.
- Faculty and admin have proven to be very responsive to student's needs.
- On-campus student housing is brand new and surprisingly affordable.
- Quality of rotation sites is unknown.
- Tuition is more expensive.
- New Campus. No one has matched or taken the USMLE yet.
Pros
- More established and good reputation; students match into well-known hospitals along the East Coast.
- Great board scores and first time pass rates.
- Paired with Virginia Tech which means there is a plethora of research opportunities and access to a robust rec center/amenities.
- The school has their own clinics in Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Honduras for students to do their rotations.
- Relatively low cost of living and tuition.
- Very tight-knit.
- 6 weeks of board prep time (as opposed to 5 weeks at RVU).
- Mandatory attendance and business casual attire.
- Rotation sites are all over the place but from my understanding, they do provide housing during the third year so this is a nice perk.
