RVUCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How were these rejections delivered? Email im assuming. Did they come pre-secondary? If post, how long after did you hear back? If you dont mind me asking you couple who got rejected, what were your stats?
My undergraduate stats were 3.4 Science GPA. 3.3 overall MCAT 21S V8; PS 7; BS 6 (not stellar I know). I graduated from a top Law School in the upper 10% of my class - cum laude and passed the Bar Exam. That, apparently counts for nothing. I took the MCAT before completing Org Chem II and Physics II. I also cmpleted Kaplan just before my retake. I'm praying for higher scores on the August 5th MCAT. One would think that RVU would have waited until my scores were released. Droogdog makes a good point - perhaps the screwing secondary didn't look good. I'll make it a point to ask when I call.

They out-right rejected you? Or are you talking about "hold" or "re-reviewed at a later date" ?
I wasoutright rejected. The polite e-mail said that I could call for some guidance on how to make my re-application stronger for next year.

I believe I remember reading on the website if an applicant scores a six or lower on any section of the MCAT, he will automatically be rejected. That's probably where your problem is. I'm sure the adcom would be thrilled with your other scores, if not for the MCAT criteria. Hopefully you can contact them and have them revisit your application once your new MCAT scores are in!

I think that Bro may be correct, it may just be that 6 on your BS. Pretty impressive though, especially since you hadn't taken Orgo II or Physics II yet.

Anyway, I guess what I am saying is that there is still hope. If you are still interested in RVU, contact admissions directly. Let them know you are still interested and when you MCATs will repost. With any luck, you may get considered after all. Hang in there, the whole process sucks.👍

These pre-secondary rejections are making me nervous, as I am still waiting to be verified due to my transcripts arriving late. 3.2 gpa 24N crossing my fingers I will be alright!!

there have been a few pre if you read above due to mcat scores being 6 or less

An update on my situation with interview dates for the sake of clarity. I e-mailed admissions about my file being reevaluated for future dates, and was told my information was incorrect. If the first dates are not available, you will be notified when more dates become available. No reevaluation is necessary.

Cool, that's good to hear. I didn't like the way it sounded previously.

Have fun with your interviews.

That sounds more like it.

What's the consensus on the DO letter? I saw it asked earlier in this thread but it was never fully answered. I made it through 10 pages of last year's RVUCOM thread and never saw it answered either.

I simply don't have any relationships with DOs. I can get a few great MD letters from my work experiences, but I don't know any DOs.

Their website suggests contacting a DO in your area. So basically I call up a few local DOs, shadow them a bit, and ask them to write a LOR for me?

That's what I did. Luckily, there was one really close and I didn't have a problem getting some hours in quickly. I would just go ahead and do it since several schools do require that it be a D.O.

I submitted both a MD and DO letter. I would recommend you try your hardest to get a DO letter. You don't need the best relationship, but someone who you have shown interest in, spent time with and can get a letter for you. Don't be shy about asking, they understand the process.

Hang in there.

Got an email yesterday with a list of hotels that offer discounts for RVU interviewees. Luckily, I get to save some cash here and will be staying with family.

OK. I figured I'd go ahead and jump on here since I've just submitted my secondary. So, I'm just waiting now.

I read some previous posts about the prompt to summarize your personal statement. They must have changed that between then and now because I didn't have that one. It just welcomed me to write any additional details about myself, which was optional.

Well, best of luck to those who have interviews scheduled and those who are awaiting interview invitations.

What's the character limit to your answers? The one line text boxes are strange.. how long are these things supposed to be?

:/

i'd email anyone in admissions to find out for sure. they'll be more than happy to answer any questions. they're pretty darn nice too.

I'd follow Boone's advice. But, just so you know, when typed all my responses out in Word it came out to be just over one page (about 8-12 sentences for each question). All of my responses fit in the text boxes without any problems.

I believe that admissions has a list of current students that are willing to house candidates. Feel free to contact admissions to find out more details.

Good luck everyone!👍

Am I pretty behind the ball if I'm not submitting my primary until this Thurs? RVU is my top choice DO, simply for the fact that it's in CO. Outside of that the new facilities are a nice bonus as well.

Any thoughts as to how my application timeline will affect my chances?

Thanks. 😉

I can't say anything about your chances, but I can say that it is taking 6+ weeks for primaries to actually get through AACOMAS. I recommend submitting ASAP so that the waiting can begin!

Good lord! 6 weeks!?!?! I appreciate the heads-up. I'll submit this Friday and just hope for the best. 😉

Here is a link to a thread that has pretty good info on average stats for most schools.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=598056

This is what it has for RVU:

Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Class of 2012 Profile:
Average Age: 26
Average GPA (cumulative): 3.42
Average GPA (science): 3.35
Average MCAT: 25
(source: http://www.rockyvistauniversity.org/...ctSheetweb.pdf )

The class of 2013 has a little bit better stats in all categories. They one-upped us 2012'ers.

Any idea as to what the increase is?

Also, any idea as to what RVU is looking for in terms of applicants?

I just got an interview invite. The first days they had open were Sept 16 and 17, but with my work schedule, I opted for the 23rd. Anyone else interviewing there? I submitted my secondary app and it was verified on 8/13 and I got an interview invite on 8/17 - amazing turn around time.

That is amazing! Congratulations on your invite! I'm interviewing on the 15th. It's my first one and I'm way excited for it. Good luck to you!

Does anyone have the secondary prompt or a link to it so I can start it early?? Much thanks

Congrats, man! Do you mind if I ask your stats?

It was just a small increase like a couple tenths in each category... I can't remember when or why they told us.
As far as what they're looking for... I don't think they have strict criteria. They like the diversity of backgrounds, so just bring along your unique story and tell them what made you decide to be a DO and choose RVU.

And as The Office would say "don't be an idiot."

29R MCAT, 3.65 Gpa non science, 3.5 science. From Oregon, but went to private university in Texas

Ha ha. I'm going to try to avoid being an idiot, but sometimes, unfortunately, it's in my nature... 😳

Nice. That seems pretty competitive. You're stats are pretty similar to mine, except that my science GPA is swapped with your non-science. Good luck, man!

What is the lowest MCAT score they have taken? Do they have a cut off?

I don't know the exact answer to that, but I do know that if you have less than a 6 in any section, they won't consider you.
I have heard of a 21 getting in, but to make that happen, you need to make up for it in another aspect of your application. Or bring cookies to the school a couple times a week.

I can bring cookies!

Hey, boone, have you heard anything about the Open House next month? What exactly is that all about? There wasn't much information on the flier.

Hey everyone,

Got my first rejection letter from RVU-COM today. Oh well, not too hurt.

To those who want to know:

cumGPA 3.18
sciGPA 3.25
MCAT 25, BS 8, VR 10, PS 7

Good luck to you all!!

Bcgans,

What do you think was the reason for your rejection? GPA? Because your MCAT is solid.

Yeah. Sometimes on interview day, your head isn't in the tour/info sessions. So the open house is a chance to get to know about the school, check out the facilities, and ask questions. This will help you decide if RVU is a good fit for you, and give you a stress-free day to ask any questions you have. It might even give you a little something to talk about in your interview.

When I was deciding which school to go to, it helped me a lot to check out the campus, meet the faculty and students, and get a feeling for the overall atmosphere. Granted, when I was interviewing, it was 5 miles away from the half-completed building. But I still learned a lot just by talking to people.

Does this help at all? I think if you're at all interested in RVU, and you're not too far away, you should definitely go.

Alright, that's enough out of me. If you have any other questions, let me know-

Yeah, that was helpful. Thanks. I will try to go. If I can't make it I'll definitely try to check out the campus another time.

I am in the class of 2013 and I know of someone who had a 21 on the mcat and was accepted... though the story behind it is pretty crazy, so I wouldn't count on that happening for anyone else.

Your name makes me not want to believe you... :meanie:

Yeah, I checked out the school in May and it was SWEET! Anyone would be lucky to study here. I look forward to visiting again in a few weeks!

Everyone that I know that is in the first class with myself had a DO LOR. They want to see that you have a real idea what the difference is of a DO and an MD (and there are differences). They want to see that you have taken the time to investigate what they are so proud of. Osteopathic Medicine is something that us as students and the faculty as doctors don't take lightly and they want to ensure that you don't either.

I would try going to the AOA website and see if you can find a DO on there in your area to follow. Worse comes to worse, email the contact peroson for the AOA and let them know you want to find someone to follow. This is how I and many other students went about find a DO. Good Luck.
