RVUCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I went to the RVU open house last fall, and it is a really nice campus. It is two levels, all brand new and extremely nice facilities. All of the student ambassadors that showed us around seemed really excited about it as well. I just got the secondary to there a few days ago and am working on it now. Good luck to everyone.

Technically it's 3 levels, but who's counting. Glad you like the place, crank out that secondary and come check the place out again in a few weeks!

As for the DO letter, yes, you need it. I stopped into a random family practice office, dropped off a resume, and some how that worked. You'll never know if it works unless you try, so give it a shot!

Anyone know how many words the secondary essay should be?

All of mine were about 1/2 to 3/4 of a page, I just copied and pasted from word.

Not that I was aware of. Those small text boxes are deceiving that's why I did all of mine in a word doc first, and I got an interview so I'm assuming the length was ok!

👍

Thanks for the info and congrats on your interview!

Speaking of secondary apps, I hope to get mine next week some time.

Would someone mind posting the RVUCOM secondary prompts? I'd like to have my essays written so I can get my secondaries out same day.

I've seen a few people ask on this thread before with no response. Is sharing the prompts considered to be cheating? Is there some other reason for not sharing?

I would like them to. I think they are posted earlier in the thread, but it would be nice if the first post had them like they do in the MD application forum.

I don't see how it could be cheating. I think it would be shadier if people weren't willing to share.

Giving out secondary prompts is not considered cheating. I haven't replied because I don't remember exactly what they were, and the prompts are posted on last years thread, I believe. These are not exact:

Why Osteopathic medicine?

Why RVU?

What unique traits do you have that qualify you to be an osteopathic physician?

Is there anything else about you that you would like us to know? Please summarize your personal statement.

That's what I have. If anyone else wants to post the word-for-word prompts, please do so. I think someone said that they took the part about summarizing you personal statement out of the secondary because it was somehow confusing, but it was there when I sent in my app. Good luck!

I posted that a while back. I received my secondary on 08/05 and it did not ask me to summarize my personal statement. They must have taken that out, but I can't say what their reason was for doing so.

The question about unique characteristics, skills, and abilities not only pertained to being a future osteopathic physician, but also to being a student at RVU.

Thanks. I forgot about that part.

Does an applicant's state of residency play into the RVUCOM admissions decision? A lot of western schools give preference to applicants from neighboring states. If someone is from, say, Wyoming or Montana, should RVUCOM be at the top of their list of schools to apply to, strategically speaking?

It might play slightly in your favor, because they might feel you're more likely to accept an acceptance. They also might get a small break from the state, which would increase your likelihood being in state or in a WICHE state. I'm not sure about this though, the only reason that I think they might is because they offer a 10% discount for in-state students.

RVUCOM is all about helping to fill the physician shortage void among the Rocky Mountain region states. If you are from say, Montana or Wyoming, I believe you would have somewhat of an advantage (provided you are planning on staying in the region and are strongly considering one of the Primary Care disciplines).

I am from Colorado, and intend on staying in Colorado. I am considering a residency in EM or General Surgery and would love to practice in underserved Colorado. RVU was my top choice and I made it...

Hope that helps and good luck!:luck:

Thanks, my guess is that what you said is right. I'm not applying until next Summer but RVUCOM is at the top of my list. The best of luck to all of you in the application process currently. ParamedicLizard, maybe we will be more in touch come next year.

Does RVU require you to provide proof of residency if you are from a state other than CO? Or do they not care as long as you are OOS?

Hey, for any of you guys that are currently at RVU, do you know what hospitals is RVU working out arrangements with for clinical rotations? I just wonder where they are going to be sending their students. For instance, PCOM sends students to a number of the local hospitals and they rotate with both MD and DO... Is there anything llike that planned for RVU? Possibly a CU/Denver Health rotation?

I can tell you that we will not be rotating at University hospital in Denver w/ the rest of the CU students. Most CU students stay in house. We as osteopathic students are taking more of a community approach and we will be sent to community hospitals, not a university hospital. With that said, I know that they are currently working on Health One hospital rotations w/i Denver, Centura in Denver, a hospital system in Colorado Springs, A hospital system in Pueblo and a hospital system in Grand Junction. Not all of these are set in stone. I also know that most of the students will be staying the Denver metro area. You may go to rockyvistauniversity.org and open the student handbook that is on the bottom right of the page for more details.

Nice! Thanks for the info. 👍

Just submitted my secondary yesterday, now for more waiting...

Just curious, are there any mountain bikers that are applying to RVU or that currently attend RVU?

Teacherman84..youre from florida where about do you ride? I ride alafia, carter road and few others??

Has anyone interviewed here yet? Any idea what the interviews are like..such as the type of questions they ask? I am interviewing on the 25th...anyone else?

Also, does anyone have statistics on how many people they interview and how many of those people are accepted?? Thanks!

there is an interview feedback forum around here somewhere and I think (could be wrong) but interviews havent started yet..something like the 15th I believe..

correct. interviews start next week. tuesday ish i believe.

the interview is low stress. be relaxed, and be ready for a 30 minute or so conversation with 2-3 faculty members/doctors. know your application, and why you want to be at RVU.

other than that, i don't know any specific questions or data regarding # of interviews vs acceptances.

good luck!

how long did it take for y'all to hear back about an interview? I submitted my secondary Aug 2 and still haven't heard.

Just got off the phone for my interview invite. I think I'm going to go on the 24th of September. Anyone else on that day?

supplemental submitted 9/6. invitation for interview 9/10. will be interviewing on 9/24!

*excited*

Yeah I'm excited too. It's my first invite. I was submitted on the 6th or seventh. See you there.

Congratulations to those who just got interviews! Wow, it doesn't seem like they have covered much ground with scheduling interviews, does it? I know some schools are well into October right now. I guess that doesn't mean anything, though. Isn't RVU supposed to be highly selective about who they offer interviews to?

I guess they are. I have been complete for over a month and have heard nothing.

If you haven't yet, you should just try calling the office and see where you are at in the application process. Their office was nice to me about checking on my application for me. Then a day later got the interview invite.

Completed applications are reviewed within 1 - 2 business days. Call Admissions...

ah this makes me really nervous that iatros submitted 9/6 (same day as me) and called yesterday...crossing fingers for a call sometime soon!!

iatros- if you dont mind, what are your stats like?

Just called admissions due to my anxiety and Katie said they have received all of my materials but have not put them all in the system. My file will then be complete by Monday and will hear something back next week per Katie...ah and the anxiety builds.

Do they let you review the application and format the essay questions before you submit, or should I just copy and paste and let them get it as they get it?

I know this has been discussed but is still unclear to me.

You will not have the chance to format your essays before you submit. You just have to paste it in there and how it comes out is how it comes out. I think in general with most applications, the formatting works best if you cut and paste the word document into a text document, then paste that into the boxes.

Alright, I'm about to head to the airport for my interview tomorrow. I look forward to meeting some of you there! Good luck to anyone else with an interview!

goodluck. I hope i'll be getting a very nice phone call this week from them.

Just received my secondary today - should have it out tonight. Hope to meet some of you soon.
