RVUCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I actually called them about this and they said that it's just a problem with the website and that they figured applicants would just call and inquire about their status anyway so that message doesn't mean anything. I'd just call them tom and check on your status if I were u.

just got the email. placed on hold 🙁 but i have to say, the email was very optimistic so it helped receiving the bad news

congrats on the interview invites!

It doesn't sound like a hold is bad at all. I'm sure they are just figuring that it's very early in the season. I'm sure they'll be calling you in for an interview soon enough. 😉

Got my rejection today.. and am oddly happy about it.

I was going to send a withdrawal letter Monday (got into another school that is higher on my list), but now I feel like they at least earned their application fee by reviewing my application (whereas if I withdrew before they looked over it, it was a waste of $50)

Small victories, even in the face of defeat!

Received an interview invite this afternoon. Had my file complete on the 17th, August.

Just a quick question: do you guys think they only email LOR writers if they are interested in your application, or do they email all LOR writers prior to reviewing applications?

The reason I'm asking is none of my LOR writers said they got an email from them, and I have been complete for a while...

Did you retake the MCAT and not have your scores in? That might be why you're on hold.

None of my writers said anything about an email and I have an interview scheduled. Although, most of my writers are the aloof type, who will tend to "forget" about emails that don't require some type of urgent attention. I'm guessing a follow-up email about their letters would not fall into the "urgent" category for them... So, it is possible that they got the email and never mentioned it.

Does anyone know what the percent of invitations sent vs total acceptances RVU has done in the past? Not talking about matriculation, but actual acceptance if possible. Thanks.

For those of you who are interviewing here, would you mind sharing how you are arriving to the school?

I don't have the number, but they don't invite you if you don't have a very good chance of getting accepted... they don't want to waste you time (and theirs). I know, I know, you want the number. My best recollection from what I heard last year would be 50-80%.

Last year it was closer to 50%, but it's still more than 50% for sure. Best of luck 🙂

Does anyone know how long after the interview until you know if you've been accepted or rejected? Thanks!

From last years thread, it looks like it takes about 2 weeks to hear back from them.

I was accepted for class of 2014 but had to defer my acceptance to 2015. If anyone has any questions about interviews or living/moving to the Parker area let me know.

🙂

👍👍 I got an interview invite yesterday! October 13th! I'm really stoked. Anyone have ideas about what kind of questions they might ask? Has anyone heard how they did on the complex?

COMLEX, not 'complex.'

I don't believe that everyone has scores back yet (but everyone should have taken it by now). The dean is waiting until everyone's scores are back to give an accurate number. From what I have heard from other people, of the 140 who took it, about 15-20 did not pass. National average is about 90% pass rate, I believe. This isn't an official number!

Hmmm, so using the 15 number and assuming the class of 2012 has ~150 students (I don't know exactly how many they have though), it looks like they are right at the national average with ~90%.

So, just a quick guesstimate range then assuming 150 students:

Roughly 85% - 90%. Does that sound about right?

That is a pretty good pass rate for a brand new school with no affiliation, imo. This seems to imply they give you all the tools necessary, which is all I really wanted to make sure of. Thanks for the general numbers and feel free to correct me if I'm way off on numbers. 😉

ok so I have a friend who goes to RVU and sent him an email asking about the school etc. before sending in my secondary. his response was interesting and i wanted to get some of your opinions on it. he said that while the school was great, he would recommend going elsewhere, because it is not yet accredited, which means all student loans go through a private bank, with a very high interest rate. he also mentioned that with these private loans "you end up paying every penny, where as with federal loans you can stop paying on them after 20 years..." is that true? i really don't know much about student loans as my parents took care of my undergrad...is this a big enough reason to not consider RVU? I am bummed out because i was really excited about going to this school and now i'm not sure, mostly because I am naive to all the student loan stuff. he said the only reason he was there is because he is doing navy HPSP so won't have to deal with the private banks....what do you all think? is this something you have taken into consideration while applying?

Um.... while the interest rate will probably be higher (especially if you don't have a co-signer), I believe you have to pay back loans no matter what (i.e. there is no loan forgiveness just because it has been 20 years), so I don't think that should be a factor in your decision.

I agree. Government student loans will stay with you for life, or until they are paid... Even if you declare bankruptcy, you are still required to pay them, so forgiveness after 20 years seems pretty far fetched.

On another note, I believe RVU offers a private loan with an interest rate only slightly higher than government aid.

Your friend seems to be naive as well. The private loans through the school are a fixed 8.5% rate (compared to 8%, I believe, through federal). The federal does offer some Stafford loans, which we don't get (about 3% with a max of 8K... or so. i don't remember exact numbers). So there is a small benefit through federal.

There is a chance that RVU will get federal loans starting in the fall of 2012, but that hasn't been guaranteed.

I have heard something about that 20 years loan forgiveness thing through federal, but I don't know any details. I do know that we're on a 20 year repayment plan right now, so it's not going to matter in 20 years anyway.

When I was applying, I did consider tuition, but found that there was very little difference between DO programs... and that the interest rate wasn't a big enough deal to live somewhere I didn't enjoy.

For you, I definitely recommend going on to the federal financial aid website and reading up a little bit. I think you'll find it's not as bad as you think, even without the HPSP.

(i have a brand new little one🙂)

Parker is very nice, quite suburb. Very family oriented, many parks in the area, and Douglas county schools are one of the best in the nation. They also have couple Charter school near RVU. Definitely a good place for family.

Interview invite!!! 😀😀 I'm really excited for this one! Colorado is such a beautiful state. 😀

Anyone going to be in town 9/19 and the evening of 9/20 for the 9/20 interview? I'm getting in late 9/18 and don't leave till 9pm on 9/20, and I thought it might be fun to connect with someone for dinner or hanging out. It'd be pretty lonely/boring that whole time otherwise. PM if anyone will be in town those days and interested!

I'll be there! I'm getting in around 1:00pm. Where are you staying? I'm at the Ramada Englewood/Denver South.

aw I wish I could join you guys. I'm not there till November 🙂

You guys with September interviews--Good luck! Make sure to let us know how it went and how you felt about the school!

So, I submitted the secondary 8/31 and just checked the myVista portal and under the Prospective Student tab it reads, "There are currently no active applications in this portlet." Should I call? I did confirm receipt of the secondary the day I submitted because the Prospective Student tab was showing a blank application, but now I have this. For those of you that got interviews, were you invited via email? What did your myVista say?

I don't know if I'll be much help, because I didn't check myVista before I had the interview offer... so I don't know what it said then.
But they called me first with an offer and a choice of dates and then sent an email. Once I had the email I had an "interview" tab on myVista.
I'd say if they confirmed the receipt of your secondary you're probably just fine, but if it gives you peace of mind go ahead and call- they are super nice.

So I just got an email saying that I got invited to interview and to go to myVista for more info, but when I go the interview tab on myVista it does not have a "Schedule" section. For those who got interviews where did you go to schedule on myVista? I want to call but it's too late 🙁 and of course I want to schedule it tonight! 🙂

Me too.....got an interview invite tonight via email😀

BUT....I also cannot figure out how to schedule via myVista..I guess I will call tomorrow! 🙂

Maybe we will see eachother there!

I got an interview too! But also no scheduling tab.

Congrats! I had to call in order to schedule the interview.

I got an invite too 🙂 but no date. What date were you able to schedule your interview on?

I just called and got mine scheduled. I was told that we were suppose to receive a call from RVU before getting the e-mail and they had ran out of time before the e-mail was sent out. It's ok!

So who's going to be there Nov 10th?! I have no idea how I will be getting to campus. Should I do taxi or rent a car??

Just called Katy to schedule the interview. She said it was just a case of the computer sending out emails before she called. First date she said she had available was Dec. 1! Wowza! That seems far away. Not sure if I'll do that or a couple days later that she offered. She also said you can get on a waitlist for earlier dates. She was very nice. I'm going to look at flights and then call back today to schedule. Good luck to all and if you interview there please write about your experience. It certainly is going to be beautiful there in December!

Well I'm at the hotel right now, I'm staying at the Ramada Englewood/Denver South (which for the record is AT Centennial Airport but I wouldn't recommend flying in here, it is probably way more expensive than flying into Denver and driving the 30 minutes). I am a big fan of the hotel because they were totally booked and therefore had to upgrade me to a suite for free. It's pretty awesome, I have a kitchen, bar, 2 flat screens, separate bedroom and a jacuzzi tub 😀 I'm a big fan.

Checked out Parker today with a fellow SDNer and there's not much there but it's pretty beautiful here with the mountains in the background. We'll be checking out the area right around the school tomorrow after interview day since my flight doesn't leave until like 7:30 lol. Stay tuned!

Awesome info! I go in two weeks with my mum and I'm stoked! Any information about where to stay, things to do, anything about the school and interview will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! 😀
