Admissions:

It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation on behalf of my mentee, Mr. XXXXX. He is currently a senior at XXXXXXXXXX having joined the university during fall of 2006. XXXXXXX is extremely intelligent and quick to pick up on concepts. I have been his dentist his entire life and have guided him on his journey towards becoming a dentist ever since he expressed his interest to me.

XXXXXX is a very sociable and likeable person who is sincere about his ambitions. He is always willing to lend a helping hand around the office. We have spent a lot of time together talking of his goals and aspirations. It is evident that he has the drive to survive in this industry. He sees dentistry not as just a career, but a venue for him to transmit his ideas for the advancement of dental health care. I have discussed with him what should be his priorities and the steps he should be taking to achieve his goal. I also discussed the ups and downs of being a Dentist. Knowing this, he is still unwavering in his aspiration to become a Dentist.

In XXXXXX I see many qualities of a good Dentist. He is very strong willed. I am confident that he will be able to grasp the concepts and procedures I employ every day at my office. He is also an eloquent communicator. Being able to effectively talk to your patients is crucial as a dentist, and I have seen first-hand how XXXXXX is a docile yet informative speaker.

Since XXXXXX has told me of his ambitions, he has come to my office to shadow me. He watched and assisted me and my staff during routine procedures such as teeth cleaning to more complicated procedures. This is where I saw how serious he was about Dentistry. He came in with the utmost professionalism and poise. He watched my every move and asked questions when he had them. He also analyzed my interaction with my patients as well as my method of filing patient records. It is apparent to me that he has a deep, clear understanding of what a Dentist does and the inner workings of a dental practice.

It is with much excitement that I write this letter for XXXXXXX. He has strong problem solving skills that he will use in the advancement of Dentistry. I have high hopes and expectations for XXXXXXX. He is very enthusiastic and I am sure that he will be a brilliant addition to your school.

Should you have any further questions I can be contacted at XXXXXXXX or by email: XXXXXXX

Sincerely,

Dr. XXXXXXXX, DDS

Hope this helps

There's a sample letter - and links to more - if you scroll up. Alternatively, you could try searching for it on Google.

Can the doctor be charged with plagiarism if he uses this same exact letter?

You can always have him/her tweak a little bit. Also, it's not published work... a lot of LORs are generic. I doubt anything bad can happen. The worst thing that (is almost impossible) can happen is your adcom recognize the letter and thinks your dentist is lazy.. which is not your fault.

Last year, I was not invited for interview at a school. When I asked for feedback, the school said that my letters had similar wording to someone else and that this was an ethical issue. I would not recommend having someone copy wording based on my experience.

I don't understand how the adcom could read the letter that may have been plagiarized and make YOU pay for it. THAT is unethical. Whether your mentor (the dentist) copied the letter or not, it has nothing to do with you and it shouldn't affect your admission decision. worst case, they just should think the dentist was lazy, not hold the student accountable.
