This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am very cautiously excited about the potential for this, some of my personal strategic planning surrounds becoming an advanced practice pharmacist.

But I'm not banking on it...lots can happen in the legislative process.

Why do articles about pharmacy always show a picture of someone counting pills? Part of a reason why the general public thinks druggists go to trade school. Why couldn't this article show a pharmacist talking with a patient?

The California Medical Association opposes the move, arguing that pharmacists don't have sophisticated enough knowledge about drug interactions to operate without a doctor's supervision.

lmfao...so these people with a doctorate in medicine have the gull to think that their knowledge about drug interactions are more sophisticated than a person with a doctorate in pharmacy?

Yeah, ok...WTF do they think we do for 4 years?

I love this ****:

"Pharmacists do have great education, but they have great education about medications," says Dr. Paul Phinney, president of the California Medical Association, which represents 37,000 physicians statewide. "They don't have nearly as much education about disease processes inside of a body and how different diseases might interact with different medications to produce different results in different patients."

Smoking cessation drugs are a prime example, Phinney says. In some patients they can cause depression and suicide. Allowing pharmacists to independently prescribe them, he says, could compromise patient safety.

[sarcasm]OH MY ****ING GOD, I DIDN'T KNOW CHANTIX DID THAT!!!!! I WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT TO SCREEN FOR THAT!!!! OMFG, PHYSICIANS ARE SO MUCH SMARTER THAN ME!!!! WHAT IF I FORGET TO ASK A PERSON IF THEY ARE ALLERGIC TO EGGS BEFORE I GIVE THEM A FLU SHOT!!!! I'M CLEARLY NOT SMART ENOUGH TO THINK OF THAT, EITHER!!! THE HORROR!!!!![/sarcasm]

-----

In all seriousness, I'd be okay with simple things like contraception, smoking cessation, and just about anything that doesn't involve physical examination. I'd be interested.

So, I was shadowing a physician today who had a 4th year pharmacy student with him. He asked the pharmacy student if I draw 2cc of this drug which is 2.5mg/mL, how many mg of drug am I giving the patient?

The pharmacy student said, "I don't know, this is more of a medical question rather than a pharmacy one." Really?? I'm a premed and I knew the answer. LOL

So, what do you guys do for 4 years? My pharmacy student roommate is always out at bars and clubs getting drunk. Please educated me since I hate to extrapolate from only 2 cases.

That hypothetical pharmacy student would be an embarrassment. Frankly, I don't believe your story at all. And I could throw a billion "listen to this idiotic thing a medial resident told me" stories, too. Whoopity do. You probably don't have a pharmacy school roommate, either. I'm 99.5% sure you are just a troll making **** up off the top of your head.

Like a pre-med version of Sparda.

LOL Instead of engaging in a discussion you are going to call me names and claim that I am trolling. So, if you are so smart how come you didn't become a physician. That way you wouldn't be fighting to take patients' blood pressure or order tests. :meanie:

Oops! I am going to get banned now because I'm engaging a pharmacist in a discussion. How dare I do that to a "doctor?"

So, basically, "I'm not trolling..." Then...*trolls*

You need to work on being more insidious. I give your trolling a 2/10. Poor form, weak insults, high transparency. You have a long way to go before you truly become pre-med Sparda.

That is pretty weak for an intellect like you, sir!

That's it? I'm a ****ing hilljack from WV that lived in trailer park until about 2 years ago, you're not going to offend me with weak **** like that.

I haven't seen this talentless a troll in a while. Step your damned game up before I lose interest.

I don't think that they actually think that, they just want lawmakers and the public to think it. This is all about the occupational lobby and protecting its interests- every occupational lobby tries to do it. If only politicians and more people were aware (or didn't sell out)- we might not have half the garbage we do in virtually every aspect of law that protects the few at the cost of everyone else.

Good bye "doctor." Your professionalism is duly noted. :naughty:

If the public knew what most pharmacists actually do for their six figure salaries, pharmacy wouldn't exist.

And I know some med school kids who couldn't pass the USMLE. What's your point? There are bad students in every field. Any pre-pharm student should be able to answer that doc's question- heck any high school student should be able to. You ask what we do for 4 years. Google is at your fingertips.

This coming from the person who does not know what they teach in pharm school? If you don't know that, then I would not find it hard to believe that you have no idea what goes on within a pharmacy either...

Look at the cost-benefit analyses in the literature and show me why pharmacists are not worth it or it doesn't really matter- it is just spineless trolling on your part.

You spend 4 years standing around in the OTC isle. How does that "clinical" experience make you better than a physician? Do you think that physicians pull drugs out of their sigmoid colon to treat patients?

You don't feed the trolls, you play with them.

You already admitted to your ignorance on what happens in pharm school and you have confirmed it here. I am not the one maligning entire professions here. I have no problem with docs or med students- some of my best friends are in med school...

As stupid as some of the pharmacy students from the diploma mill schools are, i still find this difficult to believe it's true. Even if it is, I can list 100s of things medical residents ask and say that are as dumb if not dumber. What's the point? I can tell you my roommate was in med school and was surprised at the amount of material we were doing and couldnt believe we did all that and that's a true example. Noone here needs to prove to a premed what pharmacists learn in 4 yrs as you can probably go look at it yourself. If you're really curiuos you can go read Ambrose Winter's applied clinical pharmacokinetics.

So you are claiming that you were sarcastically typing "good bye?" That's absurd. Now you are just backtracking due to your lack of trolling ability.

Whatever, either way I clearly won.

Yes Sir, You are clearly a WINNER. :meanie:

Wow! Just Wow! Low on meds buddy?

Ha, dummy. I'm a pharmacist. I'm around meds all day. Low on meds, he says. Ha. Don't you feel stupid!

Completely off topic, but I just learned that my boy John Seamus McInerney just got called up to the USMNT for the Gold Cup. The Union are effing hosed now. That damned German bastard.

Yeah dummy, you still need a prescription from a real doctor. :meanie: Otherwise, you lose your license and will end up in the produce section with that fake doctorate degree. 🙂

****, PAs have doctorates now, too? When is this degree inflation nonsense going to end?

When they stop giving out doctorates in pharmacy for standing around in the OTC isles. 😛

I don't know. If they offered a 5 year BS option, I would have taken it to be honest. Actually, giving physicians, dentists, and pharmacists doctorates is sort of insulting to PhDs. Really, they should all be bachelor-level degrees with a doctorate conferred after a residency or equivalent post graduate junction. A doctorate is supposed to mean the highest level of education one could reasonably obtain within a given subject area. Given how useless new medical and pharmacy graduates are, its pretty clear the title is abused.

Of course, on the other hand, if one were to say that medicine should be a doctorate level program and not pharmacy, then one would be claiming that medicine is much less complex than pharmacy being that it can be mastered at the highest level in 4 years while pharmacy should only be a BS with the same 4 years of work.

Crap, that sounded too serious. Um...'Murica!!!

Mikey, we don't appreciate sound logic around these parts 😎

Your a dumba*s . This post will probably give me another warning or banning for a day again from the mods. Well worth it.

"You are"

And I'm the *******. 😱
Yes, you're the one! I'm so sorry we can't educated[sic] you. 🙁

Its devolved into a spelling bee. Stick a fork in it.

"You are" Vs "Your" is not exactly a spelling error. Then again, what do I know. I'm just a premed. You guys have doctorates. :meanie:

Now, Are bananas on sale today doctor?

I'm not taking sides but someone who just registered is calling people out? Odd.

Anyway, I don't like this bill only because it says pharmacists will be given the right to perform physical assessments. Out of the scope of practice, clearly.

i got excited there would be 44 replies to this thread, then i found out it's just WV playing with a troll like a cat plays with a mouse before eating it.

Anyway, the logical trend here is that physicians have the most to lose in the healthcare system. Sure, there will always be demand - but effectively payers are saying "we like your services but we just don't want to pay them, so let's get all these mid-levels to take bits and pieces and you guys get the weird and complicated crap."

Hey I'll take bits and pieces, that's money in my pocket, all day every day.

My roommate is a prepharm and she wanted me to share this with you guys since you guys are so funny. :naughty:
