Schools with First year dorms

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
About 50% the Hopkins first-year class decides to live in apartment-style dorms. Most of the rest live within 15 minutes of campus in apartments or houses. The on-campus housing is more a matter of convenience than anything else, as Baltimore is relatively cheap as cities go. There are some traditional dorm rooms in the same building, but almost everyone who wants an apartment gets one. Hope this helps.

All the Manhattan schools have fully furnished subsidized housing to decrease prices for their students. That means MSSM, NYU, Columbia and Cornell.

NYU and Columbia are regular dorm hall setups (communal bathrooms, blech!). MSSM is apartment style with 4/6 person suites and two people per bathroom. MSSM's housing is the best I saw in NYC, hands down blowing away NYU and Columbia. I still have nightmares about the night I spent in Bard Hall *shudder*. Can't comment on Cornell's housing, though, as I didn't apply there.

Yale has a dorm with traditional singles and apartments. Bathrooms in the traditional part are communal and most are co-ed (should be interesting). I don't think any school forces people to live in the dorm, and there will always be other people who choose to live off campus, so don't worry if you don't like it.

What schools have dorm-style living for their first year students? I couldn't imagine going back to communal bathrooms 🙁

If you don't want communal br's, get an apartment. All (areas around) schools have those.

Lots of first-year Northwestern students live in mini-dormroom-sized studio apts. They do get their own bathrooms. It's not a required living situation, though.

harvard. learned from reading... not attending.

An NYU med student told me that in the first year they only make dorm styles available. She said that after that you can get a one bedroom for a decent price.

Wash U has one. I'm not sure how nice it is because I haven't been there yet.

creighton requires you to live in a dorm your first 2 years - unless youre married OR your parent/guardian lives in omaha and you can commute. kind of crazy. typical dorm- communal bathroom, 2 people to a room, meal plan and all

Ames980 I think is referring to undergrad. As a med student, there are no dorms for creighton students. Almost everyone lives off campus.

What about Heidner hall? I thought that was for med students and grad students?

Heider Hall is an option but is not required. I know one med student who lives there and that's because she didnt have a place when she got here. It's unique cause Heider Hall is pretty hard to get into and almost all Creighton med students live somewhere off campus.
