I was looking over my transcript and saw that two intro classes I took the summer before entering my university, counted as Biology.

Will they count as Biology when I apply? Also, do you self-assign what classes count as Science? If a class is listed as Psychology but is heavily science-based, could I assign it as a Science course?

Thanks!

Your butterfly reading the book avatar still surprises me

1) Any post-high school (i.e. college credits) you have taken will count. So, they will count as biology

2) Yeah you do in AMCAS, which verifies them using your transcripts.

3) Yes. >50% content in a psych class = BCPM (science) course.

Wow, that just gave me two As I never knew counted. Funny how I went from a A to a B- in the same course. Thanks!
Yeah, the picture isn't too clear when they shrink it. :bored:

An easy way to tell if a course is BCPM is the prefix. If that psych class does not have a "Bio/Biol" attached to the course number, it's unlikely that it would count as a science course.

I also hate your new avatar.

Yeah, that's what I figured. But some of the Neuro classes are categorized as Psych. Not that it is that important to me, but uptrend GPA is my friend.

Why? 😢

Because it looks stupid.

Lol your sig.

This = very wrong.

Yeah, if you are gonna criticize my response, please have the courtesy give me a rationale.

There have been people on the forums with this same exact issue and the consensus has been that those "science heavy" psychology courses do not factor into the BCPM GPA..

Ah, I'll steer clear of psych-xxx courses th3n, thanks.

@La Presse - Rationale.
I was stating that just because it's a psych class doesn't mean it won't be counted as BCPM. Here's a list of psych classes I listed as science and AMCAS didn't change them:

Intro to Neuroscience
Research Methods I
Research Methods II
Attention and Thinking
Memory and Knowledge
Sensation and Perception
Biopsychology
Cognitive Neuroscience
Experimental Methods

WHAT?! brb taking all these psych courses to pad sGPA. Thought you guys might wanna do some light reading.

Guess I was wrong--somewhat. Ok not really. I guess it really comes down to discretion.

I probably won't risk it, we have other neuro classes in the "Biology" section.

Why does a poster say that Into to Stats doesn't count as a BCPM course? I thought that was standard?

It does. I listed that as math as well. It's also why I listed psych Research Methods I & II, and Experimental Methods as science - 99% stats/math. R is officially my bitch for life.

That's so weird, several people claimed that their Stats courses didn't count on the thread linked.

I've heard of more people having issues with this with AACOMAS (personal experience as well). Just apply early and if any classes are changed that you feel shouldn't be appeal to AMCAS/AACOMAS right away. Just make sure to hold onto syllabi and/or have your prof write a letter detailing te course material.

Also, that thread is ancient. There are more recent threads on here that are consistent with people not having an issue with listing those classes as BCPM.

Not GPA padding, I was a psych major. Also, I struggled for As in some of those classes more than in Ochem or Biochem.

Wow. Game changer. I'm doing a BS in psych, 80% of my courses have been in the biological basis of behavior theme. All on your list I've taken, as well as some more cognitive/neuroscience.

My experience, the exact same courses have sometimes been double listed as PSYC or BIOL prefixes when it comes to neuroscience and I've had trouble getting credit in neuro major for psych courses due to the repetition.

If my sGPA takes a hit before app cycle I'll def take a closer at those courses.

I know the pain it took me 2.5 extra years to graduate beings I added a psych major and Neuro minor and classes couldn't overlap.

Lol precisely my prob. Dual degree neuro and psych, they allow two courses total for overlap.

Thanks! I hope taking all these science classes next year will benefit me in the end. 🙂

Fixed that for you. You should stray away from the SDN populous and take some psych classes. You may be surprised.

Yeah no. Psych isn't really my thing. I don't really like making surveys or polling for favorite type of bubble gum.

If that's your alley, I'm happy for you.

Edit-- Not sure if your eyes skip words when you read, but I did mention that the AAMC can and will exercise discretion when classifying "ambiguous" courses.

Almost said "f- it" to med school and went to grad school for social psych.

I love psych but besides the obedience/authority research I hate social psych lol. I've only taken the bare minimum required in the other themes and tons in the bio themes

That seems like the business school here, the psych surveys here are pretty interesting and I'm always willing to participate. But yeah, I prefer to do wet lab research.

I prefer wet and bioinformatics research. The psych dept. at my schools likes to hide the real research projects.

Yeah I've never done either or anything near that lol. I generally seek the experiment designs but I do know BAs do a lot of those especially those thinking of social work in the future.

I'm speaking to the cognitive aspect of psych.

Believe it or not, there's a hell of a lot more to psych than surveys.

Edit - and you'd be surprised what can be garnered from those surveys.

Also, I spent a semester working in a cog lab running mathematical models on ERPs. No surveys what so ever. Thank God they're adding a psych section to the MCAT.

Exactly right up my alley

Does Research credit count as a BCPM class?
