I just got back my Step 1 score of 239. Does anyone have insight into what competitive fields I have a chance in? Please give some advice because I know its a good score but how good.

You can do pretty much anything with that score. The rest is up to you!

What about 236, but bottom 1/3 rd of class (at an average state school)

And no research too.

Which specialties are out of the question?

The "no research" will hurt you the most
I don't necessarily agree with this; HOWEVER, it does encompass an entire section in ERAS.......

So, would it help if I tried to do some research during 3rd year but in an area separate from the field I end up choosing to go into or should I just put the time into studying?

Reason being, I'm still totally undecided about what I want to specialize in.

You might try doing research in the most competitive of the specialties you are considering and thereby hedge your bets a little.

I have never understood why some people feel so strongly that if you don't have research experience, that you won't get into a strong program. I have lots of friends who have matched at top programs who never did research. Getting published is nice if you're doing academic medicine but if you're not, it sits behind clinical grades, interview, letters of recommendation, step 1 scores, activities outside the classroom, and step 2 scores in consideration of someone's application. I heard the same thing when I applied to med school too... it's just not true

Well...it's hard to answer that because I don't know how the "market" is going to change, but I'd imagine you'd be competitive for general surgery (and assuming you do well any of the fellowships that stem off of GS). I'd say that you can probably could get ophtho, ENT, etc. if you do well on those rotations and get good letters. Like I said, your score won't necessarily keep you OUT of ANY specialty. The rest is up to you! Good luck.
